Sixth Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering, Aug 24-28 Welcome to August! That means we are just a few weeks away from the Sixth Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering. This year it is being held from August 24-28 in Elkins, WV surrounded by the fantastic riding roads throughout the beautiful Monongahela National Forest. There are still limited hotel rooms available for those who have not yet reserved, and we have a good number of people planning to attend this year. The Gathering is an informal gathering of friendly Goldwing owners and riders from all over the US, although a Goldwing is definitely not a prerequisite - we've had all sorts of rides show up over the years! Don't miss out - check out our information topic and get your reservation in soon: Sixth Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering More Q&A Videos We're continuing to produce our very popular Q&A video series on the GoldwingDocs YouTube channel. I've got a great list of questions from our members that keeps growing, but please submit your questions if you have something you'd like answered! We've rolled out four more videos this month, covering a wide range of questions from our members. Because the list was getting pretty unwieldly to post in this newsletter, I decided to post a new topic in the forum that contains ALL of the Q&A videos, and which I will update every time a new video is released. You can check it out here: GoldwingDocs Q&A Video Library If you haven't yet subscribed to our YouTube channel, you really should take five seconds and do it today - as always, it's completely free: Subscribe to the GoldwingDocs YouTube Channel Cordless Impact Wrench Review I've had a pneumatic impact wrench for many years, and it's unsurpassed for loosening seized fasteners, and just making everyday maintenance easier and faster. Of course, it means you need a large powerful compressor and hoses to run it. With the advent of high-powered, lightweight lithium battery technology, the same power is now available in an inexpensive cordless tool. One of these is the SeeSii cordless impact wrench. We reviewed this impact wrench and used it to do some maintenance - and produced this video showing it all. If you're interested in a cordless impact wrench (and you really should be), you should check out the SeeSii Cordless Impact Wrench Review. Broke Down On Vacation GoldwingDocs member Kelly66502 was three days into a trip, and pulled in for the night. It wasn't supposed to rain, so he didn't bother putting a cover over his bike. That night, there was a torrential rainstorm. His bike was soaked! The next morning, there was no dash light self check, no spark, no start! The bike was dead. He was stranded! He came to GoldwingDocs looking for help, in order to rescue his vacation plans. Have you had similar experiences? Think you can help him out and get him back on the road? Check out: Broke Down on Vacation Never Saw That Before! Member wingbug has been riding Goldwings for 22 years, starting with a 1988 GL1500. He went out to ride his 2015 GL1800 the other day, and saw something he'd never seen before: the odometer and trip odometer on his dashboard had gone blank! The speedometer and tachometer work normally, as do all the other functions of the LCD display. He tried disconnecting the battery for a while, but no luck. He's wondering if anyone has seen this before, and might know how to fix it? If you have, or want to see what might be the solution, check out: Bet you've never seen this... Tire Replacement - Age or Mileage? Member efragertours has a dilemma. The tires on his GL1500 are practically brand new: they have only 1,000 miles on them. However...they are seven years old. His bike has always been garaged, so the tires have not been exposed to the sun or elements. He wants to know - is it safe to keep riding on these tires? Or should he be replacing them before he rides any more? Think you have the answer? Facing the same question? Check oiut: Tire replacement based on miles or age? Tire Balance Beads Tire balance beads have been used by motorcyclists for many years. We did a comparison review on Dyna Beads vs Counteract Beads several years ago. These beads give you a mirror-smooth ride, prevent tire cupping, and make your tires last longer. GoldwingDocs member ScorpioIM recently replaced his tires, but couldn't get the tires to balance using lead weights. He decided to give the beads a try - and to his delight, following our guide, he was able to install them easily and get his tires perfectly balanced! However, member MikeB had a problem - he's been using balancing beads for over ten years, and recently when installing new tires with new beads, he had a bad vibration that he couldn't get rid of. He finally figured out the problem and was able to fix it - but it's an easy mistake anyone could make. Read about his mistake and how he fixed it: Balance Beads New (to you) Bike, Engine Died! Member rushtk is a lucky guy - a friend of his gave him a 1993 GL1500 that had only 25,000 miles on it. He changed the oil, cleaned out the mouse deposits, and took it out for a ride. Out on the highway, 3 miles later, and suddenly the oil light comes on and the engine dies. This is never a good thing, but if you've been a member here for any length of time, there is one maintenance procedure that we recommend be done to EVERY "new to you" Goldwing (except the GL1800). And this procedure should be done before the engine is started, and certainly before the bike is ridden. Unfortunately, rushtk may be falling victim to this failed maintenance, and it could be a very expensive lesson indeed. Read more about his story, and see how he works out his problem - and what he finds went wrong: 93 GL1500 Is Dead, Jim! GL1500 Exhaust Collector The GL1500 exhaust collector is a component under the bike that connects between the exhaust headers and the mufflers. It allows the controlled mixing of exhaust gases from the two banks of cylinders in order to evacuate the cylinders and reduce exhaust noise. They are exposed and subject to corrosion - and they aren't made anymore. Aftermarket manufacturers have sprung up to fill the void, and GoldwingDocs member agedbikeman is trying one of them out. He found an inexpensive copy on Amazon of all places, and supplied us with a link. He's trying out the aftermarket collector, and thinking of adding additional baffling to reduce noise further. Check out what he's doing, and how he's making out on his project: GL1500 Exhaust Collector Trailers: One Wheel Or Two? Member dug wants to buy a trailer for his GL1800 this season, and he's never towed one before. He's considering both a dual wheel trailer and a single "unicycle" style trailer - but he's concerned with the handling of it. There are some hard and fast rules when it comes to towing with a motorcycle, having to do with the width of the trailer wheels and length of the tongue. Have you towed either type of trailer and could offer advice? Or perhaps are looking for a trailer yourself? Check out: Trailer Choices: Single Wheel or Dual Wheel Air Wings - Worth It? With the temperatures outside getting hotter and hotter every year, many motorcyclists are looking for ways to cool down their ride. One of the long-time aftermarket products to offer this is Baker Built Air Wings - small, repositionable wings that mount to either side of your fairing, to catch some of the air and blow it inwards towards the rider. Member biguns bought a pair and wants to know if they really make a difference, and are worth mounting to his bike. Have a set of Air Wings on your bike? Considering them for yourself? Check out: Air Wings Worth Installing? GL1800 Valve Adjustment GoldwingDocs member anschmidt has a 2008 GL1800. Asking many of the GL1800 owners in his (now defunct) GWRRA chapter about adjusting their valves, not a single one had admitted to ever having it done. The manual calls for a check on the valve clearances every 32,000 miles - his bike now has 77,000 miles, and he's pretty sure it's never been done. He's wondering if this is a problem, or what symptoms he might expect if the valves are NOT adjusted regularly. He's looking for some real-world experiences from actual GL1800 owners who have had it done - or required it. Wondering the same thing? Have some advice to give? Check out: GL1800 Valve Clearance Check Hundreds of Goldwing Parts for Sale The huge number of used (mostly GL1500 and GL1800) parts that I bought a couple of years ago continue to be added to the site for sale. I split my time between photographing and adding new products, and filling the orders that people place. There are still literally hundreds (probably thousands - I haven't even opened all of the boxes yet) more parts that have yet to be added to the site, and I'm working my way through them as I can. So if you are looking for some parts for your Goldwing, check back regularly to see what's been added. You can see the store here: GoldwingDocs New and Used Goldwing Parts Replacement G8MS-H30 Relays for GL1500's Goldwings, particularly GL1500's and GL1800's, are filled to the brim with relays. These electromagnetically-actuated switches are used to switch all kinds of circuits, from headlights to radios to even the starter. However, they are a mechanical device, and after some time they will fail. If one of the many relays in your GL1500 has failed, or if you'd like to have a few on hand to carry around just in case one does (to avoid being stranded!) - and you'd like to take advantage of our quantity purchase, now is the time to buy them for less than half the retail price you'll pay from Honda. Check out our GL1500 relay store page: G8MS-H30 Relays Of course, we still have our other product as well: GL1000/GL1100/GL1200 7 volt regulators. We are now sold out of our discontinued GPS Inputs, however there are a few still available from other vendors.

Replacement Goldwing GL1500 G8MS-H30 Relay The Goldwing GL1500 G8MS-H30 Relay is a relay used for quite a few different functions in the GL1500. The GL1500 is filled with relays - there is a box full of them, next to the fuse box! These relays are mechanical devices, and have a limited life. When they do fail, critical systems can be affected, leaving you stranded! It's always a good idea to carry one or two spare relays with you. We have these high-quality relays in stock, at less than half the price that you can buy the equivalent OEM relay from Honda! |

Brand New 7 Volt Regulator for Four Cylinder Wings If you have a GL1000, GL1100 or GL1200 Standard Goldwing with mechanical (not electronic LCD) temperature and fuel gauges, you've had this problem. Or...you will. It's only a matter of time. You'll start noticing thkat your temperature and fuel gauges are reading off the scale - the temperature is in the red, and the fuel shows full. The only thing is, the bike isn't overheating, and you know you've only got a quarter tank left. Or...even worse: your bike is operating normally, and suddenly your temperature and fuel gauges just turn off, and look like the picture to the right. How much fuel have you got left? You'll have to guess! What's causing it? A faulty, worn-out 7 volt voltage regulator. Behind the fuel and temperature gauges is a special voltage regulator that turns your motorcycle's normal 12 volts into the 7 volts on which these two gauges run. When it starts to fail, it typically starts doing so intermittently. Left in a failed state, it can cause damage - allowing a full 12 volts into your temperature and fuel gauges, destroying the delicate coils inside! That gets expensive, requiring the replacement of the entire center gauge cluster! What's the solution? For almost five years, we've been manufacturing a modern, solid-state 7 volt regulator to fix this problem once and for all. Hundreds and hundreds of Goldwing owners all over the world now have operating fuel and temperature gauges thanks to our 7 volt regulator. If you've got this problem - or you know someone who does - check out our 7 Volt Regulator and get it fixed! |
