The NEW Goldwing....Not So Fast!! (VIDEO) When news of this bike first leaked out, I discounted it: a copy of the iconic Goldwing, made by a a Chinese manufacturer. I figured it was one of those Goldwing-looking things with a scooter engine in it. I was wrong. This is a major announcement from one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world, who have poured millions of dollars into R&D to produce an 8-cylinder, 2000cc touring bike designed to beat Honda at its game. Now that more details about the bike, called the "S2000 GL" have emerged, people are starting to take this far more seriously - and I'm sure Honda is as well. See a collection of pictures, and watch the video where I go over all the details and features of this new touring bike, and leave your comments on what you think of it: A New "Goldwing" to challenge Honda? 8th Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering! This year's Gathering has been officially announced: this year we'll be gathering in Seneca, South Carolina, surrounded by mountains and thousands of miles of beautiful, twisty roads! Previous years have encountered weekend travel problems for some of the rides, so this year the gathering is being started earlier: it runs from Monday, August 19 to Friday August 23rd. As always, a block of rooms at a special discounted rate is being held until August 1st - but don't wait to reserve yours! Last year we ended up buying out the entire hotel, and there were several attendees who could not get a room. Book early (there is a generous cancellation policy if you can't attend). They are going FAST! For more information and questions, check out our new special Gatherings section on the forum. Here's the official announcement: 8th Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering Aug 19- 23 Seneca, SC JUST ANNOUNCED: This year special, moisture-wicking commemorative T-shirts have been commissioned - you MUST have your T-shirt order in by July 24: 8th Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering T-Shirt Order A Plea For Animal Lovers I have a very soft heart when it comes to animals. I've owned cats and dogs my entire life. This is a request I'm making on behalf of a good friend, who recently rescued a small cat named Willow from a terrible situation. This poor, abused cat has suffered at the hands of humans, yet is still friendly and trusting. Unfortunately, her owner has discovered that Willow has a serious health issues caused by an injury she suffered from the abuse, making it hard for her to breathe. Surgery can correct it, but it's expensive, more than she can afford - so she started a GoFundMe to help pay for the surgery. If you could spare even just a couple dollars to help little Willow live a long and happy life, it would be greatly appreciated: Help Willow Breathe Free Again Stripping and Bobbing Old Goldwings New GoldwingDocs member Jack_Riddle has an idea for a small business he'd like to try: buying old Goldwings, stripping and/or bobbing them, then reselling them for a small profit. He came to GoldwingDocs to ask the opinion of the members as to whether there would be a market, and if he might be successful in his efforts. There was quite a strong reaction, which surprised me. What do you think? Is there a market for restored and bobbed classic Goldwings? Would you purchase one if it was available? Check out: Stripping and Bobbing Old Goldwings Tire Pressure - Can It Cause Wobble? Member LMX@749r has a new-to-him 1986 GL1200 trike that has a wobble. He was told by the previous owner that the bearings were replaced...but others more knowledgeable who have ridden the trike have told him that it is not safe to ride the way it is. He's wondering if something like incorrect tire pressure could cause this type of wobble - or is there a different, worse possible cause? Of course there are many other potential causes - loose steering, wheel bearings, or even frame issues. Think you know what the cause could be? Or care to offer some advice? Check out: Tire Pressure - Can it Affect Wobble? Sudden Worldwide Failures of Regulators? I'm not sure if I can explain why it's happening - but in the last couple of years, the sales of my aftermarket 7 volt regulators has steadily declined. I expect this is due to the fact that the number of running four-cylinder Goldwings that use them is declining. I had figured that within two or three years, I probably wouldn't even bother making them anymore. Don't get me wrong - they are popular - I have made and sold tens of thousands of these regulators over the years, and they are in four-cylinder Wings all over the world. Unlike the original regulators, these will last the life of the bike, so I don't really have any repeat customers. However...in the last two months, sales of my regulators has absolutely exploded! I have sold more of these regulators in the last two months than I have in the last two years combined. It'sbeen challenging to keep up with the manufacturing of them! I'm not sure what is going on, or why there is suddenly this tremendous demand - but I guess I'll keep making them! If you have a four-cylinder GL1000, GL1100 or GL1200 and the fuel and temperature gauges have failed, you will need one of my regulators. You can buy them in the GoldwingDocs Store: Goldwing 7 Volt Regulator Terrifying TT Video The Isle of Man TT was this month, and every year we get to see terrifying and jaw-dropping videos of the best of the best motorcycle racers competing on the toughest, most dangerous course in the world. This year was no different, but the videos were. This year we were treated to a full-length in-helmet POV video from Davey Todd as he completed the entire cours. No interruptions, no cuts, this is exactly what the rider sees through the race as he flies around the island at up to 220 mph. If you want to see superhuman riding skills, check out: Most Terrifying TT Video Ever Best Dash Camera Position Member Troyite wants to mount a dash camera to his motorcycle to capture his rides. He's looked at a few different cameras, and is considering how to mount them. He was thinking about a handlebar mount, but the fairing will block a lot of the view. Behind the windscreen might work, but there would be distortion from the plastic. One member mentioned helmet-mounted cameras, which I don't like particularly for safety reasons. Have a look at what our members recommend, both in terms of camera type and mounting position: Dashcam Placement "Must Buy" GL1500 Parts GoldwingDocs member Yorick1026 recently bought a 1993 GL1500 SE. He had a horrible (seriously - HORRIBLE) experience with the local Honda shop, and has decided he needs to take over his own maintenance. Knowing that some GL1500 parts are becoming scarce, he's thinking that there might be a list of parts he should buy "just in case" when they come up for sale. If you think you could help with this list, or if you want to read more about this TRULY horrible dealer/mechanic experience (you will be shaking your head), check out: "Must Buy" GL1500 Parts? Have I Ruined My Clutch? Member Rane overhauled the clutch slave cylinder on his GL1500 last year. However now he has a problem: the clutch reservoir is empty. Because he couldn't disengage the clutch, he ended up having to shut the engine off at stoplights to get it home. Now he's trying to figure out what went wrong, and is worried he's destroyed his clutch. This could be a very serious problem, as a clutch leaking into the crankcase can destroy the engine! Find out what our experts recommend: Have I Ruined My Clutch? My Fender Fell Off! This is a problem I think we're going to start to see more and more often. As our front wheels spend years thrashing up and down through potholes and worse, the plastic fenders and covers attached to our wheels get a beating. Eventually, they can break. I had the mounting holes on my GL1500 wheel cover break after many years, and had to make plastic repairs to it (see How To video). Member echinus1988 had the front fender from his GL1800 fall off when he hit a bump, and it was lost. He's trying desperately to find a replacement. Have you checked the security of the plastic bodywork on your front wheel? What else can you do to prevent it? Check out: My Fender Fell Off! All Four Plugs Fouled! GoldwingDocs member Curtissterling has a GL1100 did a rebuild on his carburetor recently after it sat for six years. Now when the bike runs, it carbon fouls all four plugs in short order. He's wondering what he might have done to cause this, and more importantly, what he needs to do in order to fix it. There are a few different things that can happen to spark plugs, and you can learn to "read" spark plugs using our reference guide: How To Read Spark Plugs Find out what our members recommended for Curtissterling: All Four Plugs Carbon Fouled! Replacement G8MS-H30 Relays for GL1500's Goldwings, particularly GL1500's and GL1800's, are filled to the brim with relays. These electromagnetically-actuated switches are used to switch all kinds of circuits, from headlights to radios to even the starter. However, they are a mechanical device, and after some time they will fail. If one of the many relays in your GL1500 has failed, or if you'd like to have a few on hand to carry around just in case one does (to avoid being stranded!) - and you'd like to take advantage of our quantity purchase, now is the time to buy them for less than half the retail price you'll pay from Honda. Check out our GL1500 relay store page: G8MS-H30 Relays Of course, we still have our other product as well: GL1000/GL1100/GL1200 7 volt regulators. Replacement Goldwing GL1500 G8MS-H30 Relay The Goldwing GL1500 G8MS-H30 Relay is a relay used for quite a few different functions in the GL1500. The GL1500 is filled with relays - there is a box full of them, next to the fuse box! These relays are mechanical devices, and have a limited life. When they do fail, critical systems can be affected, leaving you stranded! It's always a good idea to carry one or two spare relays with you. We have these high-quality relays in stock, at less than half the price that you can buy the equivalent OEM relay from Honda! |

Brand New 7 Volt Regulator for Four Cylinder Wings If you have a GL1000, GL1100 or GL1200 Standard Goldwing with mechanical (not electronic LCD) temperature and fuel gauges, you've had this problem. Or...you will. It's only a matter of time. You'll start noticing thkat your temperature and fuel gauges are reading off the scale - the temperature is in the red, and the fuel shows full. The only thing is, the bike isn't overheating, and you know you've only got a quarter tank left. Or...even worse: your bike is operating normally, and suddenly your temperature and fuel gauges just turn off, and look like the picture to the right. How much fuel have you got left? You'll have to guess! What's causing it? A faulty, worn-out 7 volt voltage regulator. Behind the fuel and temperature gauges is a special voltage regulator that turns your motorcycle's normal 12 volts into the 7 volts on which these two gauges run. When it starts to fail, it typically starts doing so intermittently. Left in a failed state, it can cause damage - allowing a full 12 volts into your temperature and fuel gauges, destroying the delicate coils inside! That gets expensive, requiring the replacement of the entire center gauge cluster! What's the solution? For almost five years, we've been manufacturing a modern, solid-state 7 volt regulator to fix this problem once and for all. Hundreds and hundreds of Goldwing owners all over the world now have operating fuel and temperature gauges thanks to our 7 volt regulator. If you've got this problem - or you know someone who does - check out our 7 Volt Regulator and get it fixed! |
