Re: Saddlebag Lights not behaving

Thanks for the input folks. I checked all the pigtails and grounds and found no faults. Then I took out the light strip on the right side that was working and moved it over to the left pigtail. It light right up. This told me the problem was with the left side strip and not with any of the wiring. I...

Re: Dyna DS1-3 Help!

Two years ago I bought a Dyna unit to upgrade my '78 GL1000. I did, as you did, using the accessory block to provide the 12v power to the Dyna unit. Fussed with it on and off for about three days and could not get it to work properly. Upon troubleshooting everything I could think of, I decided to ch...

Re: Turn Signal Beeper

Thanks to all who gave me suggestions. I think I have found a suitable solution. I took some black foam molded sound insulation, and made a little pocket to enclose the beeper. It muffles the sound enough so I can still hear it with the engine running, but it's soft enough so others near me on the s...

Saddlebag Lights not behaving

I am working on a friend's '97 GL1500SE. He is the second owner, so I suspect the light strips on the lower sides of the saddlebags are not the originals. A pigtail from each tail light on each bag was stubbed through the back side of the bag and the leads to the side lights were twisted to the pigt...

Turn Signal Beeper

Has anyone found an alternative to the turn signal beeper? I like the idea of some kind of alert to remind you to turn off the signal, but I'm not real fond of the squealing noise that the stock item makes. I know some automobile signals make a clicking sound as a reminder. Has anyone made such a sw...

Clutch slave cylinder rebuild

I'm in the process of rebuilding a clutch slave cylinder for a '97 GL1500SE. However, upon removal of the unit, the rubber seals were so deteriorated they fell apart and I cannot tell how to orient the new seals from the rebuild kit. The microfiche isn't clear enough for me to tell either. Can anyon...

Headlight bulb to LED

Has anyone replaced their stock 12V 60/55w headlight bulb on a '78 GL1000 with a LED cluster? I made this swap on my '99 Valkyrie and had no problem, however, I don't know if the same can be said for an older bike. I know there are modules available to take care of a halogen/LED swap, but I'd like t...

Rotor question

How likely is it for a rotor to lose magnetic strength? I have a '78 GL1000 with charging issues and am troubleshooting. I know a sharp blow to the rotor can cause problems (like dropping it repeatedly on a cement floor) or heating it until is is cherry red, but none of that has happened. I'm just t...

Leaking petcock

The petcock on my '78 GL1000 leaked in the 'off' position. I removed the petcock, and it fortunately is the type that can be disassembled via two small screws. I took off the lever and found the inner gasket that allows selection of res-off-on had crumbled. Does anyone have a source for a replacemen...

Re: Instrument lights

Took Fred Camper's advice and changed to LED's. Got some on-line that were for late model Ford dashboard illumination. Direct swap for the #53 incandescent bulbs I was using. Came in a pack of 20 for less than 5 bucks with free shipping. Real happy with the results. Bright enough to see now, but not...

Instrument lights

How can I get the instrument lights in my '78 GL1000 to be brighter? Going through the tunnels on the Blue Ridge Parkway, I can barely see my spedo and tach, and I cannot see my temp, fuel, and voltage lights at all. In my garage, by cupping my hands around the guages I can see the lights are all on...

Re: What I did to solve the bad neutral switch common proble

OK, OK, I did it! The last oil change gave me the opportunity to repair the neutral switch correctly. I unbolted both the back and front right motor mounts, removed the right exhausts, and that gave me enough clearance to flex the frame and remove the oil screen and the neutral switch. The replacemen...

What I did to solve the bad neutral switch common problem.

Many have addressed the bad neutral switch problem on this forum and here is what I did so I don't have to stare at a constantly on neutral light. I bought a reconditioned switch when my stock switch went bad, and couldn't flex the frame enough, as suggested, to replace the original. So I used some ...

Manifold bolt torque

Try as I might, I have not found a reference for the correct torquing of the manifold -to-cylinder head bolts. The shop manual references removal of the acorn nuts holding the manifolds, but just states reverse the steps on re-assembly. No torque value given. Same with the Clymer manual. Same with th...

Re: Darkside Tech: Using Car Tires on a Motorcycle Rim

Sounds to me like it all boils down to personal choice, like wearing a helmet or not in states where that is an option. My personal choice is that I always wear a helmet and always use motorcycle tires. Also, I don't smoke, do drugs, drink and drive, nor do I try to force others to do as I do. The b...

Re: Bad neutral switch

Thanx for all the advice. I took a look at all the threads on this forum and also on Naked Goldwings. The consensus seems to be 'replace the switch'. Since I'm giving the engine a good SeaFoam scrubbing, I'll be changing the oil and filter in another 300 miles or so, and that looks like the best tim...

Bad neutral switch

I read the previous posts on this forum, and determined that I had a bad diode, as the neutral light glowed in every gear. I did the test where when the clutch was pulled in, the light still glowed. I tested the diode and found it had continuity in both directions, so it was replaced. The new diode ...

Re: stranded in parkinglot

I would start by checking all the fuses. The battery may also have discharged; this sometimes happens if the key is turned to 'park' mode which leaves the tailight on. A wire may have come loose or has cracked to make an open circuit; or maybe a plastic connector has come loose, has broken, or has s...

Solo Seat

Since my inseam is only 29in, I am on my toes when riding with the stock seat. I would like to have the option of a solo seat that gives me a lower seat height when I ride alone, but can easily swap to the stock seat when I want to ride 2-up. Have any of you Forum members tried something like this?
