Re: How to remove and replace your timing belts

Black marks are alignment marks made by someone who changed them most likely.

Re: Best helmet on a wing with a full windshield?

Full face helmets are warm. Some are hot. I've been wearing full face for over 35 years in all kinds of temperatures. Now I'm wearing a Shoei Neotec II. It's got decent ventilation on top. The chin vent isn't great, but that may be because of the lack of wind actually hitting it because or the wind...

Best helmet on a wing with a full windshield?

Hey all, I've been wearing a half helmet due to the warm temps we've had, but I'm feeling like a modular full face helmet would be a lot safer. My problem is that I get so damned hot in full face helmets! When I was riding a bike without a windshield, it wasn't too bad, but I have a huge windshield ...

Re: Only getting around 20MPG

If your new ride had been "sitting" for awhile when you bought it, it would take 4-8 tanks of gas (with Seafoam ofcourse, mixed at about 2 oz/gal) to clean up those carbs. You want to clean up your idle jets so keep your RPM's around 2K in city driving. Freeway riding is "flow-of-traffic" obviously...

Only getting around 20MPG

Hey guys, I recently picked up an 88 Gl1500A and have been trying to do all the maintenance. So far i've done engine oil, coolant, timing belts, spark plugs and a full bottle of seafoam through the gas tank. But I noticed that my gas mileage has been pretty poor. Only around 20mpg. Note, I mostly ri...

Re: 6.5" Speakers & A Double Din Touchscreen Radio

Yeah I was thinking about it. I'll probably try to cut one out of lexan and put it on a hinge or something.

6.5" Speakers & A Double Din Touchscreen Radio

Hey All, Just finished installing my new speakers and amp and radio in my 88 GL1500A. I'm not completely satisfied with the housing I made for the radio, but I think it looks decent. I bought the bike pretty cheap, so it's actually been nice not being afraid to do some crazy customization. If it had...

Re: 4"x6" speakers in the dash?

I took the pockets out. I was going to leave then but they slant so severely on one side that I couldn't get the magnet far enough down in there. You could maybe just cut the pocket price? That way you still have the support of the frame?

Re: 4"x6" speakers in the dash?

It's not as easy as the original poster did it. You have to cut out a good porting of the plastic to get it in there. The bracket the adjusts the windshield gets in the way. I tried mounting them on the outside of the plastic but the bezel wouldn't fit properly so I cut a bit more and mounted them ...

Re: 5'5"

Well, it's a beast of a bike and especially difficult to maneuver at slow speeds, even for experienced riders. I'm young (31), tall (6'2") and pretty strong and I'm happy for those facts when making an imperfect stop or need to muscle the bike. I've been riding for more than a decade, but the Wing d...

Re: New sound system. Where to ground amp if battery is too far away?

Ok. That's what I will do then. Thank you! automotive audio stores have that kind of wire I am speaking of, the electrical hardware stores don't, theirs is the 7 strand, rigid stuff you don't want. to hard to work with. I had a lot of extra power wire left over, so I just used a piece of that and w...

Re: 4"x6" speakers in the dash?

I went through the similar a few years back....Polk speaker on the our corners, equalizer amp and sub-woofers in the trunk, and a marine stereo in the dash where the factory unit was. Yeah sounds better than before.... But I am seriously considering taring it all out and replacing it with A Pyle or...

Re: GL1500 stereo upgrade/replacement

I've been playing with different ideas to upgrade my stereo ever since I started riding Wings 20 years ago. Thrilled at the Unobtanium idea, and already signed up in the other thread. I'm currently playing with a BT cassette adapter which seems to work pretty well, although it's got its own issues ...

New sound system. Where to ground amp if battery is too far away?

Hi all. I'm upgrading my sound system in my new-to-me 88 GL1500A. So far i've installed a new stereo. It already has aftermarket 4" pioneer (look to be pretty cheapo) speakers in all 4 corners, but I'm upgrading the front speakers to Sony 4x6 inchers, I'm adding a 600w amp and running all new speake...

Re: 4"x6" speakers in the dash?

I attempted to install the Pioneer 4x6 Speakers like you did however I can't figure out how to get the speakers to fit any lower in the opening. The edge around the speaker is at least 1/4" thick and the bezel won't fit over them. Now i've got this huge opening I need to figure out how to get the s...

Re: GL1500 stereo upgrade/replacement

The blank-off panel bolts to the existing mounting holes used for the standard GL1500 radios so no mods are needed, and I think you can use the same screws that were used for the radio but I'm not 100% positive. They're about 6 cents each from most hardware stores. That Jensen radio or any other br...

Re: How to remove and replace your timing belts

I know this post is like 7 years old now, but I just wanted to thank you so much for the detailed walkthrough. I just bought a 1988 GL1500A last weekend and wanted to do some maintenance since it has 144,000 miles and no service records. I am handy and do woodworking and leatherworking, but haven't ...
