Re: Re-installing front brake calipers after wheel removal. Won't go back on!

Thanks! Yeah, I figured out the solution...open the bleeder and physically force the pistons back. All good now!

Re-installing front brake calipers after wheel removal. Won't go back on!

Took off my front wheel for a tire change and putting everything back on now...and the calipers won't go back onto the rotors. The pads have closed in a bit and can't slide it back on. Any solutions other than ripping apart the calipers?

Re: Front wheel axle not flush on right side

It's definitely in properly. Spacer on the right side, axle with 22mm hex end inserted from the left side. Axle torqued to 42-ish ft/lbs. I've noticed other people talk about this in forums but nobody has replied. The PO of the bike had chrome rotor covers installed, which would have created even mo...

Front wheel axle not flush on right side

Changed the front tire and now reinstalling the wheel on my '83. Following the DIY article here, and my front axle doesn't want to be flush with the right side of the fork. Not sure if it was like this when I took it off. If I un-torque the axle, it will push back out and be flush, but when I torque...

1983 Gl1100I - Replacement Brake Pads in 2019?

Hi, looking to get some new pads on my '83 Interstate and need recommendations. Not sure what fits and/or is complete garbage. Right now would love the most economical option that is decent. Doesn't need to be the best and longest lasting (though would like to know what that is), as I just want to g...

Re: Drive shaft grease

OldguyGlen, did you perhaps own a 1983 regal brown GL1100 in the past? The reason I ask is that I have a sort of "diary" for my bike that was kept by the PO and he notes that the original owner was from Mound, Minnesota. Saw your location and a little light went off in my head. Or maybe everyone in ...

Re: Drive shaft grease

I think you're right. The o-ring is 47mm. I measured my mangled one and it's definitely smaller than 60mm. Thanks!

Re: Drive shaft grease

Thanks for the reply! Well, that pic is one I snagged from the rear wheel removal page here, haha. But my splines also look like they're in really good shape still, thankfully. The grease sitting where the arrows are pointing, I guess that is old "normal" grease that was pumped into the fitting befo...

Drive shaft grease

This grease sitting here when you pull off the rear wheel, does it need to be cleaned out? Should I put more in, and if so, is it just a multi-purpose type of grease? Or is this the grease that gets pumped in through the zerk fitting?

Hahaha, thanks for the disclaimer. Sounds good. Though I have a tub of the loc-tite 65% moly paste, which I hope will suffice.

Re: Ooops, don't think I was supposed to remove these nuts

Hahaha, you said it. A real bitch to take off. Thanks for the recommendations! Would it also work to just go buy some fresh serrated flange nuts and then wrench them down with a bit of blue loc-tite?

Ooops, don't think I was supposed to remove these nuts

When I was taking off the rear wheel I mistakenly removed the 5 flange nuts (have little indents on the sides) on the star shaped piece that has the rear wheel drive splines. Now gonna have to put them back on. I have two issues: 1. Don't know the proper torque for these guys. Any ideas? 2. These nu...

Re: Plugs looking oily

Hopefully the problem isn't major. Upon buying the bike the PO assured me that the bike was in top condition and it wouldn't need anything. Blah! Tires, plugs, timing belts, oil, coolant, air filter, fuel filter...and the list keeps growing. Probably gonna be opening the valve covers soon and going ...

Will it fit? 1983 GL1100I w/ Shinko 230 Tourmaster Rear Tire

New to the GL world, but have been reading about the rear tire clearance issues. The PO of my bike had Dunlop Elite 3s on the bike (MU90B16 for the rear). The tires are old, but I've put a small amount of miles on them and noticed that they were rubbing a bit. Seems like only in a couple of spots, s...

Re: Plugs looking oily

Greetings from Kansas! Thanks for the reply! My knowledge about the machine: 55k miles (original speedo broke and was swapped, so have to trust him on that). Apparently the PO had the bike for 2 or 3 years and did a fair amount of riding, though he said he didn't ride it as much during the last year...

Plugs looking oily

So, bought an '83 Interstate a few days ago. Bike seemed to be running well and have been riding it some without obvious problems (though the engine does seem to get hotter on the right side and there is some puffs of smoke on startup that reduce as the engine warms up). Regretting not pulling the p...

Final drive, drive shaft, axle, etc. cleaning?

Doing a tire change and rear wheel type maintenance. Want to know what is appropriate for cleaning all the splines back there? Brake cleaner? Just wipe it as best as possible? Any other tips for cleaning up all the parts in the axle and final drive area?

External engine bolts...where can I get them?

The PO of my bike had chrome covers on the sides of the bike, but I prefer it without (for both aesthetic and practical access reasons). Apparently, to allow space to attach the covers, a longer bolt was used on the final drive cover. Without the chrome covers the bolt is too long and won't seat (se...

Re: What's this cover? What are the torque values?

Thanks Denver Winger. I was quite sure it was something else, because I know where the fuel pump / tach drive are. Guess the pic was confusing because it was from the book and had the black arrows from the book and then my red arrow.

What's this cover? What are the torque values?

What's behind this cover (see photo) next to the fuel pump? Also, torque values for those cover bolts? I'm guessing 7-10 ft-lb, as that seems to be the norm for that size. Reason I'm asking is because the PO installed chrome cover plates on the side and I had to remove a few bolts that were used as ...

Re: Coolant reservoir fill line

If manual states normal operating temperature, then seems like I should warm up the bike and then check the reservoir. Fill to the top line ("FULL") while the engine and coolant temp are hot.

Coolant reservoir fill line

I'm a bit confused about topping off the coolant reservoir. When cold, should the fluid level ideally be at the top line ("FULL") or at the bottom line ("LOW")?
