Re: Timing Belt Tension

How many years has it been? But general no adjustment just change the belts at five years or x miles lots of opinions on that from 50,000 to 100,000. They are made not to stretch??? and teh tensioner adjusts itself anyway.

Re: gl1100 smoking oil - corrosion on cylinders?

No simple way to fix pitting. If compression good 140 or above and even ..I'd ride it and add oil as needed..easiest fix is to swap the engine out.

Re: new here, and some questions, of course !

CHANGED THE BELTS BEFORE YOU TURN HER OVER WITH STARTER!!! Yep blade fuse is a good idea..easy to do but not a relay as such a solenoid. As to wires yep at the ignition can be taken out just two bolts hold it in place. You could jumper at the plug or cut wires if cutting anyplace you can access betw...

Re: Hauling my GL1100 I ,

I wouldn't used the crash bars in front they are to low. I'd use the lower triple tree point. Same on the back..use the frame higher up. compress the shocks just a bit front and back and don't leave the side stand or center stand down.

Re: intermittent oil smoke

Not a big deal..many smoke on startups and after a minute or two clear up..if it isn't doing it anymore ride it and forget about it..sources are bad rings or seal seals. If your compression is good not rings.

If both are not working 99% it's the regulator assuming they are both plugged in..You need to replace it.

Re: Concerned about compression

Yep dirty carbs but not starting with starter fluid you may have other issues. That compression is low but the bike should still start, how the spark? How's the battery?

Re: Spark Plug Wires

Yep new wires and caps. Caps still available for Honda..any standard plug wire of the same gauge should work. But an easy test would be to insulation the wires from the engine..rubber mat, wrap in electrical tape etc. and see if that gets you better spark.

Re: Maybe a silly air ride question

Set with the wheel up to within specs ...like the book says..I guess you could drop it down and check again to see if it changed much and then be able to set w/o putting it on the center stand..

1/2 cog not a problem more than 1 is..

temp hard to say..bike, air temp, mix used etc. etc. but if I remember correctly 180 to 200 the thermo opens so a bit above that I'd say the fan should come on..

Re: carbs

Before you do that I'd try some seafoam..a couple of tanks with appropriate amount added..might help it out quite a bit. You can also get to the carbs with a little effort at least to see if they are working well. Like changing the air filer gets you there..

Re: Carb Rebuild issue....Stuck throttle valves

I have been able to get throttle shafts moving by squirting a solvent(carb cleaner, brake cleaner, acetone, etc. ). directly at the shafts and then just keep working them by hand..may take several applications but they will loosen up.

Yes they are a PITA to remove and re-install.

PS Easy to make an electo-magnetic.. find a piece of iron that will fit in the key slot..get some thin copper wire wrap it around the iron..the more wraps the strong it will be..12 v battery and there you go.. Re: Broken key in ignition HELP!

Take the lock apart and maybe you can push it out from the end..MAYBE!!! if not toast anyway and you'll have to rep[lace.

Check the end you have with a magnet..if it attracts really Strong electro magnet may pull the end out????
