Re: Stopping gracefully

Great suggestions everyone, thanks! The one suggestion that has made the biggest difference for me was to totally let off on the front brake before coming to a complete stop. The unnerving thing for me is determining how much lean to the left to make before planting my foot. But it is comforting to ...

Stopping gracefully

Admittedly new to my 2005 Goldwing, after 10 years on my VTX 1300, I have to ask, what is the secret to stopping gracefully on this bike? Rarely can I slowly come to a stop with only my left foot down without either quickly slamming my other foot down or feel like the bike is going to go over and ta...

Re: GL1800 Valve Adjustment

I'm not about to argue with you, especially because I'd rather be safe than sorry and had asked about a valve check at 40k, and that's how I got my info. My dealer has had his honda motorcycle dealership for over 30 years. In his experience he has rarely had to make an adjustment on a Goldwing under...

Re: GL1800 Valve Adjustment

I'm very fortunate to have a very honest dealer/mechanic. He told me that in his opinion, he is just taking money from me if I follow the manual and bring my bike in before 100k. "It's a Honda", he says. Interestingly, I had my 2007 VTX 1300 checked at 40k and a different mechanic told me that 3 of ...

Re: Cruise control issues

Just had the same problem. Luckily my bike is still under a limited warranty so after my dealer identified the faulty relay switch in the clutch lever he also replaced the one in the front brake lever saying if one has gone, the other might go shortly. ( He's kind of good that way.) He also told me ...

Re: Fog light switch/power take-off

And now the follow-up. The fog light problem was a relay that needed to be replaced. And the power take-off plug had a broken contact in it so it had to be replaced. Nothing serious, the bike is 15 years old and these little things just happen. Thanks for everyone's input. I was pretty comfortable m...

Re: Fog light switch/power take-off

Thanks for your information Techdude. I'm new to this site and I see now that I'm using the 'search' engine that you've already answered this question for someone else previously. Thank you for taking the time to help me.

Re: Fog light switch/power take-off

Thought you were on to something there. When I went to check on your suggestion I noticed that the fog lights flickered on momentarily as I switched from high beam to low beam but unfortunately that's all they did, and then they stayed off.

Fog light switch/power take-off

Just discovered that my fog lights won't come on when switch is depressed and that there is no power coming from the power outlet in the left side compartment. Any chance that they both run through the side fuse or relay?

Re: Repairing trim lights

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately shipping costs may double the price but it's good to know they're available rather than replacing everything. Hopefully I can find a distributor closer to home. Thanks again.

Re: Repairing trim lights

It has been suggested to me that the dependability of aftermarket products such as these trim lights, especially after 15 years, is not good. Looks like I'll just be replacing them. Thanks for everyone's input.

Re: Repairing trim lights

To add, I just realized that the same section of lights on the right saddlebag is on but rapidly flashing. Interesting that it's the same section on both sides acting up. Makes me think a wiring problem?

Re: Repairing trim lights

Yep, that's exactly what they look like. If it can't be repaired, it doesn't look too expensive to replace. Hopefully I'm not the only person that has had this problem and there's a fix but if not I now know the manufacturer. Thanks.

Repairing trim lights

I recently traded my VTX for a 2005 GL1800. The dealer dropped it off and picked up my bike assuring me that everything was in working order. (Not as bad as it sounds, there is a 3 month warranty period beginning in April) Today was the first chance I've had to begin checking things. This doesn't se...

Re: Engine protection plate

Thanks to everyone for your input. Seems to be a good idea if just for peace of mind. I have read of some minor concerns such as the screws being able to come loose, or the opposite, rust into place. I was also interested when one reviewer wrote about some damage to the pan when he tried to raise hi...

Re: Engine protection plate

Yep, that's exactly the part I'm interested in hearing about. Do you have one on your bike and feel it's necessary or just an extra precaution? That's the opinion I'm looking for. Thanks.

Thanks for your input, Larry. Maybe I misled you; I don't presently have the guard on my bike, but was wondering if riders here in general thought the guards were necessary.

Re: Engine protection plate

Thanks. You have to love how the manufacturer makes it sound like it's an absolute necessity, but then again that's how advertising works. Love to hear ideas from others.

Engine protection plate

I'm new to the site having recently traded my VTX1300 for a 2005GL1800A. I've been trying to research as much as I can about maintaining my new ride. I'm wondering how many of you believe the engine plate that attaches under the engine is important? 10 years on my VTX and the most I ever noticed kic...

Re: First time posters, say hello!

Hello. Just traded in my 2007 VTX1300S for a 2005 GL1800. I've been a member of the VTX Cafe for 10 years and found the group there very helpful. I've been looking for a Goldwing site and this one seems to filled with the same type of people. I'm from Brantford, Ontario, deep into winter, so I have ...
