Re: White smoke from exhaust - head gaskets?

The first thing I would recommend to you is to get in the habit of turning the fuel petcock to the off position about a quarter or half mile from home. It does some good. If you haven't done it already change the oil and filter. If the bike has been neglected this will help to get the bad things gon...

Re: Progressive shocks and forks

I had Progressive 416 air shocks on my 1100I. They blew out for couple reasons; high pressure and incorrect installation by the PO. I replaced them with new Progressive 412s conventional shocks. I like the 412s better. The spring rate is good, there are 5 preloads and quite frankly the feel and cont...

Re: Valve covers

I would suggest the following. Find some places that deal in parts for these bikes that have an online microfiche showing the parts. Call up each model and compare the part number for the valve cover gaskets. If the numbers are the same the parts are very likely the same. Companies don't like to cha...

Nice to see a pic of the old KLR. Brings good memories of pleasant rides.

Re: Ever got rid of a bike you wish you hadn't?

The one I truly miss is my 96 Kawasaki KLR-650. It was the bike that got me back into it in 1999. Just some very minor mods, ran 15w-50 Mobil 1 and that big 6 gallon tank and never had a worry or a hiccup. Did nothing absolutely great but did everything very well. Seventy on the freeway, 50-70 on th...

Re: Going naked

That does look good, especially with the flatter bars. Mine is 100% original with a fair amount of accessories.
What's that blue bike in the window? Looks like a Puch motor and the leading link forks look good. Reminds me of a small Ducati air-cooled two stroke but don't think that's it.

Re: Going naked

Don't strip it, it is in too nice of condition to mess it up. There are always neglected crappers to strip down to roadster status and they are cheap. Yours' looks as good as mine and I would never strip mine. It will retain far more value as original with the factory installed equipment. Old motorc...

GL1000 and Vetter sidecar

Thought I'd post this in case anyone is interested in things like this. There is a Gl1100 with a Vetter sidecar on the Detroit Craigslist. It is located in Marine City north of Detroit and south of Port Huron. The contact info looks a bit hazy. If I knew how to post the link I'd do it. I know the si...

Windshield cleaning

Would like to post a little tip on windshield and for those who ride without one a face shield cleaning tip. I bought some lint rollers in a four pack at Costco some time ago which means I'll have them for a while. While cleaning off the windshield one day remembered that one of the big problems is ...

Road conditions, I-94 in Michigan

Winter is over in Michigan and the things that live under the pavement are digging themselves out. I live near I-94 in Macomb county. Through the years when the road was resurfaced with black top the lanes were done one at a time and not as a uniform surface across the entire road. These seams tend ...

Re: It is time to say goodbye.

I think the time comes as you get older when you start to think about it. Watching the quality levels of drivers around you is often scary. In 800 miles this past year had one turn in front of me, one pass me closely doing about 80 on a 55 mph road and another sharing my freeway lane as he passed me...

Re: fork brace

Fork braces generally help a great deal. While I have yet to put one on the GL1100i the two I've made in the past helped both bikes they were on. They tend to stabilize the front and prevent twisting effects from bumps and things like railroad tracks, ruts and pavement seams. One caveat that will he...

Re: Do you wear your " Helmet "

Always wear a helmet. Had two friends that went down in the late 60s and both hit their heads. Both were wearing good helmets and both came away okay. There was another guy in the area who had an AMA racing license and was a pro. One of the neighbor kids had picked up an S65. He decided to try it ou...

Re: air pressure for 82 wing shocks

The Progressive 416 air shocks can be rebuilt. You need to determine where the air leak is at. If the lines are not the source of the leaks check at the top of the shocks where the rubber meets the aluminum housing. If the seals inside go they will leak around the top at the mounting eye. Put about ...

Re: Impaired riding

Always made it a policy to never drink and ride. There were always enough people around me driving badly to demand my full attention. One time I broke policy and had about three Manhattans in the course of an evening at a friends house leaving around 11:00 pm. The Shadow Ace I had at the time had al...

Re: Completed THE MOVE to AZ. Story & Request For Ride(r)s

For a nice loop ride with good scenery: Take 60 east all the way out to Globe. Stop and see a few things on the way; Boyce-Thompson Arboretum and maybe Besh Ba Gowah right in town. Back on 60 east keep a close eye for the turn off to 77. It's on the right a bit east of town. The road was good and th...

Re: Progressive air shock problems

Thank you for the information. Was not looking forward to buying a new set of shocks. Considering the potential work involved in everything I will probably shut it down for the season as the bearings need work and the disc looks like it may get replaced during the other work. Also have stainless bra...

Progressive air shock problems

One of my shocks has apparently blown its' top. One of the Progressive 412 air shocks on my bike is leaking out the top of the shock. It appears the aluminum housing has separated at the upper mount seal and the air is leaking out of there. Does anyone have experience with this and does anyone know ...

Re: For parts or repair

Why not first determine if you have bent valves in yours? If you buy another project bike you will have 2 projects on your hand. To me the cracked pulley does not sound like a good indicator of positive things inside your engine. Quite frankly, when it comes to bikes, cheap can get expensive in a hu...

Re: Bars Leek Liquid (or similar)

Mine leaked a bit of oil like yours. I replaced the valve cover gaskets and the bolts too since the rubber was chewed up on them, No more problems. If the rubber cones on the bolts are chewed up they won't put on enough pressure to seal the gasket.

Re: Superbrace, super cheap

Sorry to be so late with a reply. I checked the Superbace site. The say it is made of 6061 T6 aircraft grade aluminum. If they actually get aircraft grade it is certified aluminum stock and costs more. Being made from billet simply means it is made from a solid chunk of metal and not welded together...

Re: Superbrace, super cheap

To some who commented on the quality of aluminum used for a part I can tell you it is very important. There are many, many types of aluminum alloys with many different characteristics and purposes. There are some that would probably crack in short order under the stress of a fork brace. Get the good...
