Re: 1983 GL1100 - Loose rear wheel bearing - will this damage the gears in the rear end?
Will it cause a problem? Could be, hard to say but for the time and effort involved in changing out the better tire, why risk it?

Re: Gl1100I - front brake pads not braking on the whole surface
The problem is FINDING Aspencade rotors! If you look up aftermarket replacement part numbers you'll see that the Standard and Interstate rotors fit a few different years although genuine Honda part numbers show them as being different for the '83. As for me, I bought a set for an '82 Interstate that...

Re: Gl1100I - front brake pads not braking on the whole surface
On your bike it's the part with the word "Trac" - the lower part of the fork that slides on the tube and the axel bolts through about 18" long. Yep, that's it. The rest of the fork parts are the same between the Interstate and the Aspencade, it's a matter of disassembly and changing ...

Re: Gl1100I - front brake pads not braking on the whole surface
I had the same problem on mine, turns out the part number of the lower legs matched an Aspencade with the rest of the front end being Interstate, the rotor diameter is larger on the Aspencade. Noticed the solution when swapping out the front tire and found a sticker with the Showa part number on it ...

Re: Left front direction not working
Start with your basics. Remove the bulb and give it a check, look for corrosion inside the socket that might be causing a poor connection. You might want to use an electrical meter to see if the ground on the socket is good by going directly to the battery with your other lead. Go over the wires and...

Re: Indicators stop working when driving ?
A faulty relay certainly is a possibility and as mentioned I have no experience with a 1500, I'm taking a common sense approach since I've often overlooked the basics in the past. In your case everything was working fine and changes where made to the bike, this created a problem when those changes w...

Re: Indicators stop working when driving ?
Are any of the wires coming off the left side switch housing bullet type connectors that connect into the wiring harness? I'd be inclined to think something switched positions when you where reassembling.

Re: Indicators stop working when driving ?
Can't say as I know the 1500 electrical system but here's how I'd look at it. My guess is unbolted large pieces of racks, made some frame mods maybe and moved a whole heap of things around while installing the kit. First thing I'd be looking for is any ground wires and making sure they're well faste...

Re: Need advice on front forks
^^^^^What he said!^^^^^ You also might want to try turning the fork tube to loosen it up, by hand at first then maybe grab it with something like a big pair of channel locks with a rag over the jaws to not nick up the finish.

JCU - If you looked up "irony" in the motorcyclist's Dictionary... Seems to me the propaganda going around in '83 was telling us that the Goldwing used more American sourced parts and labor than H-D did. I'm not sure if that's true or not but I'm quite confident that the '83 Lowrider I bo...

There's no shortage of online sources for parts and USPS still delivers rain or shine. Over the course of the last nine years I've spent the majority of my time in Ameristan, that part of the U.S. that begins as you leave the "Blue" cities, Walmarts begin to appear and everything on the in...

It's rather interesting that the Honda parts fische is rather ambiguous on the parts involved not naming everything which often helps determine what you need. Either way, here's another picture to look at that might help you figure it out. https://www.babbittsonline.com/oemparts/a/hon/505408e6f87002...

Actually Joe what I'm hoping for is to create a spark and have it explode so I can collect the insurance money to put toward an ST1100.

Re: How do you know if petcock is bad?
A blockage on both tubes, in a clean tank seems highly unlikely. Pulling the tank is a big job. I'd first try blowing back into the two ports where the petcock mounts. Just by a piece of tubing and your mouth for starters. Compressed air next. Whatever you learn will help decide the next move. Yeah...

Re: How do you know if petcock is bad?
Update: It wasn't the petcock at fault! Bought a rebuild kit and pulled it apart and it was clean as a whistle inside. The inside of the tank is CLEAN so the blockage must be inside BOTH of the tubes inside the tank. Looks like I'll be pulling the tank and soaking it with vinegar this weekend.... ugh!

Re: Plugs,Wires,&Caps
Ah, here's the simplest and cheapest thing you can try. Pull the plug wires out of your coils and snip about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch off them. You'll probably see that there's a green or bluish green powdery look to them, this is corrosion causing a bad connection. Looking inside the coil where the wires...

Re: Plugs,Wires,&Caps
A quick look at the parts fische shows that the plug caps are "Noise suppressor" which leads me to believe they have resistors in them. Do you have a repair manual? It may be able to steer you in the right direction. On my 1983 1100 the plug caps have 5k ohms resistance which I deduced fro...

Re: Can someone suggest an AGM battery?
DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT buy an AJC brand battery! Sure $65 looks good but when mine went to crap after three months it cost me $30 to ship it back for a warranty replacement which in turn crapped out 6 weeks later. I've had my best luck over the years going to AutoZone and ponying up the $125 for...

Re: SeaFoam Question
IMHO, 99% of engines have no need for Seafoam in the crankcase. That's what I thought too, then it was suggested to give it a try to loosen up the crud in the starter sprag clutch in order to get it to engage in cold weather. When I drained the oil it looked like beef stew gravy, lot's of stuff flo...

Seems to me the smartest move is to not overthink it. Wait until just before you need your next oil change and add it then.

Re: 1983 GL1100 rear shock issue
It takes my mini HF 12v air compressor about 10 seconds to go from 10psi to 50psi in my shocks, my bet is that using a standard high volume compressor blew the seals out.

Re: How do you know if petcock is bad?
Bingo! My assumption is that if they BOTH are blocked then the petcock is what the two have in common. It'll be a couple of days before I can get to it but I'll report back.OldguyGlen wrote: ↑Mon Apr 04, 2022 2:36 pm If it is blocked on both ports, then its probably a petcock problem.
