Re: TIMING MARKS I NEED TO UNDERSTAND

Thank you everyone. The new belts are on and she is running significantly better. All of your help was invaluable. Valve adjust is next, they are pretty loose. You can clearly hear the tickety ticks. Oh boy I get to learn new things again lol. I promise I'll get pictures of her when she is dressed u...

Re: HELP timing marks??? am I in trouble??

Check spark and fuel would be the first places to start.... If it was running fine highly doubtful anything happened with the belts, unless you didn't tighten the tensioners. I did just exactly what you suggested. The spark is fine and it has great compression on all 4 all came in about 120lbs +/- ...

Re: HELP timing marks??? am I in trouble??

Go ahead and move the crank to the timing mark. Move the cam pulleys to line up as required. You'll hurt nothing moving the crank/pulleys that small amount. Maz THANK YOU! This is the answer I hoped for. I have now aligned all of the marks I will report after the new belts are on. I will still be r...

Re: Western States "Bucket Ride" The story

This is the beginning of my story and there is much to come and tell you all about in the near future. In February I was given a 1986 Kawasaki Voyager 1300A. It had been sitting outside and uncovered for 24 years. it only has 35k on it I am the second owner. All of the plastics need love the fairing...

Western States "Bucket Ride"

Have a sit and hear my tale. I am an NOR (new old rider) I will be trying to get as much seat time as I can this fall and even winter if it's dry. This is in preparation for my upcoming adventure. I plan to go on a 15 day tour of the western half ish of the US. I will leave from Tigard OR and head e...

Re: TIMING MARKS I NEED TO UNDERSTAND

Easiest way to put the right belt on is to dispense with the wrench and zip tie and let the cam go where it wants to (about two cogs CCW). Then turn the crankshaft a corresponding two cogs CCW away from T1. Then you can put the belt on without fighting the valve spring, easier that way. After the b...

Re: TIMING MARKS I NEED TO UNDERSTAND

Since one timing mark is low and one is high, I think your T1 is not quite lined up with its mark. You gotta look square down hole! Take a second look...….. I have taken the second look early this morning when I removed the old belts. Using the T-1 port I lined it up perfectly. That's when I found ...

Re: fuel and timing issues??

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions. as it turns out my initial thought is correct, one of the fuel lines simply broke from age and hardness. new fuel lines and filter went on today and two gallons of fresh gas (I got all the old fuel out first) She fired right up with no issues. No ove...

Re: fuel and timing issues??

I didn't know that. Sorry. I would still put off my trip as long as possible until I got the carbs rebuilt. Last thing I would want to happen is breaking down riding across Nevada on hwy 50. Just joking but... not knowing your planned route. ??? I wish you luck. Ha ha awesome I agree that I would n...

Re: fuel and timing issues??

Just my opinion. If you are really going to attempt a 15 day ride out West on that 1100 then do yourself a favor and purchase the Randakks carb kit and do the carb rebuild properly. Last thing you want to have to do is rebuild the carbs while on your ride. Good luck to you! I would love to do that ...

Re: TIMING MARKS I NEED TO UNDERSTAND

The timing marks rarely line up "Exact", "Correct" is when moving the belt one cog would make the cam timing marks line up "worse". I agree, the left cam looks like moving the belt one cog would make it line up better. The odd thing is it's usually the right side that winds up installed off by a co...

TIMING MARKS I NEED TO UNDERSTAND

Well as a result of one thing leading to another on a "new to me" scooter, I am doing a number of things before this is put back into service next season. I've changed the oil and filter and am changing the coolant. I took the radiator off and have flushed everything flushable, while the radiator is...

Re: fuel and timing issues??

<Snip> fuel overflowing, bike will idle only with the choke on, stalls when you give it any throttle. i have had good success with just dis-assembly and THOROUGH cleaning, but i am a) monetarily retentive and b) retired with plenty of time to play with carburetors. your situation may be different. ...

Re: fuel and timing issues??

i would be checking float height and cleaning the fuel inlet needle seat. for that i like to put a q-tip in the drill, put a dab of the orange hand cleaner on it (the type that contains pumice). you could also use carb cleaner and some people use toothpaste . a few seconds of that and a rinse will ...

fuel and timing issues??

I did a test start on the 1981 GL1100 today, she fired up and ran but I noticed she was leaking fuel so immediately shut her off. I have ordered new fuel hose, clamps and filter, which will be here Tuesday. I could not see the source of the fuel leak directly. So I decided to change the filter and f...

Re: Letters below the Start/Stop selector????

Hmm.. Kinda looks like that rounded area the annotations are on was made to accommodate a three position switch that isn't there. I know some European Spec models you could turn the headlight off... "Headlight" "Parking Light" "Off", maybe? Yes you are spot on. In the UK we have the switch there. M...

What do the H the P and the dot below the Engine start/stop switch mean? I have been repainting the letters as mine were very faded and that is when I noticed these.

WANTED 17217-463-000 Air cleaner gasket

I have a 1981 GL1100 and the gaskect that seals the air filter element to the basket is curling and shrinking from age and mis-use. In this case shoddy work from mechanics and general lack of knowledge of the previous owner has made this gasket/seal become folded, curled and nearly useless. The PO h...
