Re: 83 Aspencade - hard starting

My guess is that it’s running too rich and flooding. I would start with ensuring the floats and pilot screws are to spec.

Re: Rebuilding carbs

From what I understand, tolerances and quality on aftermarket carb rebuild kits are not to the same standard as Honda OEM. For that reason, many old-school technicians recommended only replacing the rubber parts and spotlessly cleaning everything else. Anything out of spec should be replaced with or...

Are the needles and seats OEM?

Just curious — what’s the gap on both sets of plugs and were the originals resistor plugs too?

Re: overheating or wrong temp?

From the pic of the spark plugs, it looks like one cylinder is running rich. How’s compression and did you double-check float height and the rubber tip on the float needle?

Re: overheating or wrong temp?

If you have good spark, I would lean towards a dirty idle circuit. You might give this a try:

I’ve also seen suggested to use a cheater over the tang on the center stand to create more leverage.

See if this helps. It’s my understanding that the GL1000 is a little more difficult.

Re: Carb codes for gl1100s

They sure will. It’s often advised to completely dissemble, clean really thoroughly, and replace all the rubber bits with Randakk’s kit. There are really good resources here, NGW Forum, and Randakks.

Re: new to me 78 1000, almost 'barn find' condition

I would check underneath the bike for more rust, especially around the center stand, and make the judgement if the subframe needs to be replaced. The bike won’t be safe to ride in my opinion, if the frame’s structural integrity is shot. https://www.google.com/search?q=1978+gl1000+subframe&rlz=1C...

This is the stuff I like. Formulated for aluminum and engine parts. Sometimes hard to find locally, though.

Re: Cracked heads

I would check the water pump. Oil and coolant will mix when it or its seals fail. If the impeller has side-to-side play or is made of Bakelite, it needs replaced along with all the front end gaskets. After that, I would then perform a leak-down test to see if you have a bad head gasket.

Re: Burning oil.

What’s the compression on the cylinders? I don’t think you would have smoke on the right side of the engine due to the bike sitting on the side stand. These bikes are known to smoke a little on startup from the side stand when a little oil gets past the rings, but usually through the left exhaust an...

Re: Timing Goldwing GL1000

Those that have been around these engines for a long time often advise to replace the belts before any other work is performed. It’s really best practice since they’re interference engines and many conditions, including age and non-use, can cause catastrophic failure. That said, everything under tho...

Re: Timing Goldwing GL1000

Did you replace the belts? You could pull the covers and make sure the timing is correct. It’s my understanding that the engine will run one tooth off, but poorly.

Re: Fuel leak - idle screw connection?

I can't tell from the picture...is it dripping off of carb#3? The potential leak source there is the accelerator pump. If the diaphragm goes bad gas will travel up the rod and squirt out the top. You can usually see it if you look at the pump rod and twist the grip sharply. I might be wrong, but I ...

Re: No power if throttle is turned more than 25%

My guess is that if the fuel pump was already leaking, that the condition of the diaphragm has become worse and the bike is not receiving enough fuel at higher RPMs. In my opinion, a leaking fuel pump needs to addressed anyway and might help troubleshoot your issue as you check it off the list.

Re: Does this mean engine pull

Here’s a good way to test your charging system:

https://www.randakksblog.com/comprehens ... eshooting/

I would also test the AC output of the stator. It should be >50 VAC @ 3,000 RPM. Be careful when doing this.

The engine is painted. The valve covers, belt covers, carb tops, intake runners, and forks will have had a clear coat at one time.
