Re: 86 1200A Aspencade Radio conversion
I know it is a bit of an old thread, but maybe this can help out: https://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=374555#p374555 I soldered on a phono-jack which I use with an old, small, waterproof iPod, and I did it a little different than the setup in the original post and works out fine and is hi...

Re: Tail light sensor purpose
Make sure it's not just a stuck rear brake light switch. That is a far, far more common problem. You have just confirmed my theory on what is happening to my bike - I have lots of light but nothing changes when I pull or step on my brakes. I had considered if it was the contact for the rear brake a...

Re: What's Happening Today?
I had my first ride on the Goldwing for quite a long time! I've been having some issues with the engine kind of choking when accelerating, and had the carburator out last year (I think), but after cleaning it there wasn't much (or any) difference. Now I bought a new battery - and had thought that pe...

Finding my old license plate
This might be an odd question: I am kind of a documentation freak and I have some nice binders from the Navy which have some small "windows" on the front; these I use for my veichle documentations (sales documents, road tax, insurance papers, registration slip, service/repair/parts bills, ...

Re: What's Happening Today?
Wednesday I refitted my carburator - but not more than have happened as I had my birthday yesterday (so I spend the day in a 1970 MG MGB GT) so I am looking forward to get a nice ride next week!

Re: What's Happening Today?
Apart from some unrestricted autobahns in Germany, 75mph (120kph) is the fastest in Europe. In Denmark the speed limit on the motorway is 130 km/h (with some being locally limited to 110 or 120 km/h) and 80 km/h on the highway (some may have local speed limites ranging from 60-100 km/h). 998180ceed...

Re: Yamaha RD 350 - the old one!
I had a 74 RDE-350 in 1975. Replaced it with a new Honda 750 S (?) bought in 1975. Have since had numerous bikes but the RD was the best one. I have a hard time letting loose with almost 5 grand to replace it. I have a near mint 1200 Sportster now and a good enough 1986 Aspencade that are both too ...

Re: Oh snap! Final drive eye broken
The one I did was broken much worse than that. We used drill bits for additional strength bonding the two pieces together. Unfortunately, inserting pics isn't working for me. Just to be sure you mean something like this, am I right? s-l1600.jpg Of course holes in both the "big" and "...

Re: Oh snap! Final drive eye broken
I've added a picture from a service manual and circled the area I think you are talking about. Is that correct? Is it the outer part of the assembly that has broken off? Is the threaded portion of the assembly intact? The best way to fix it would be to replace it. The next option would be to have i...

Re: Oh snap! Final drive eye broken
This ain't the best picture but right now it was not possible to really get a good angel (need an extra hand to hold the swinger up): IMG_20220801_070233.jpg The "eye" on the outer side is the over broken - the bolt itself might be broken if it is designed to have the tube fitted but the t...

Re: Oh snap! Final drive eye broken
Really should not have taken that kind of force to get it apart, unless something is way out of alignment. No one local who can TIG weld it for you? Well the real loading is down and the bolt will have some support from the threads. As a side of the road repair it would probably get you home, but I...

Re: Oh snap! Final drive eye broken
I've seen that before. I think it's because the little collar (#12) moves in, or out, just enough to keep the lower shock from moving. I fixed one once by drilling holes in both sides of the break and filling them with drill bits and J.B. Weld. I know it held for a couple thousand miles but haven't...

Re: Oh snap! Final drive eye broken
I have had some ideas of two-component epoxy for metal (should have it's full strength after 24 hour of up to 140 kg/cm² or 1991 pound per square inch) - but I doubt if it actually is strong enough - or if it at least can be used until I can get a new housing for the final drive (which seems to be d...

Oh snap! Final drive eye broken
As I tried to get the rear wheel off, I had the lower suspension bolt removed but the suspension it self wouldn't bulge: After some work with it, lots of hammering, and wedging it finally said pling and the suspension arm moved forward and the swingarm went down - perfect! Except the top half of the...

Re: PC800 Pacific Coast
I think the PC800s are looking great, and I was considering getting one or a Pan European, but I liked that the luggage was integrated in the bodywork of the PC (or a BMW K100/K1100 or R1100) when I was looking for a bike, but we ended with the 1984 Goldwing instead - but I am still thinking about t...

Re: How many GoldWings is "too many"??
The white one had carbs and vacuum lines done by the PO, so it is a better "runner" than the red one. It actually gets better mileage than the red one. About 3 mpg or so, which is a lot because it pulls hard and begs to be driven hard. The red one has a back rest, aero windscreen and the ...

Re: Yamaha RD 350 - the old one!
Indeed; I read a lot of great stories about it, and I quite enjoyed riding the last generation of RD350, though the YVPS is most likely a much different experience than the first generation's classic setupjoecoolsuncle wrote: ↑Fri May 20, 2022 10:51 am Beautiful! remember them well, and would beat many a bigger bike in the streets!

Re: Why do I even bother....
Got the aftermarket ignition switch but it sure isn't fun to work on a Goldwing  Too many things to remove. I managed to get one of the bolts of without too much dismantling (the right bolt) - and even just using the 10 mm ring spanner from the tool kit. The left bolt wasn't as easy to get into...

Yamaha RD 350 - the old one!
I love my Goldwing, sure it has some quirks as it is not new anymore, and when working on it, it takes a lot of time as everything is wrapped up in a lot of plastic and screws - come to think about it that is notihing new as I used to drive a 1992 Yamaha RD 350-R, which is a full fairing YPVS 2-stro...

Voltmeter or Ammeter?
I already have a voltmeter on my 1984 Aspencade - but it seems to be faulty after a crash last summer, and therefore I may need to replace it no matter what (dread it since I probably will hate the whole dismantling process...) - and it made me think, what would be most usefull on an old Goldwing - ...

Re: Tire bead breaker
Howdy everyone, Has anyone used this type of bead breaker? If so what are your thoughts on it? Some rubber hose on the top ring that the rim sits on may be a nice addition, but other than that it seems as though it should work well. I can't really find much chatter about it. Thanks, Eric I have one...

Re: Best tyres for 1200
As these bikes are older you might be limited in what tires are available that will fit. Never owned a 1200, but I'm pretty much limited to the Dunlop D404 to fit the '80 1100. They give good service. I am actually considering the D404 for my 1984 Aspencade - also because they can be delivered with...

'85 LTD Cruise Control on '84 A?
Since I am out getting parts anyway I saw that a dealer had a cruise control for an '85 Limited Edition laying around, and I am wondering if this one will fit my '84 Aspencade (Californian model)? I already have a Vista Grip manual cruise control, but it is tightened up to the point right before it ...
