Re: Would a navi update be useful for a trip to AK?
Instead of spending the money on a GPS update I'd reccommend getting a copy of The Milepost, for the current year. This book lists every road in Alaska and north western Canada. It lists mileages, towns, where to find food, gas and hotels. It is updated every year with the latest info. The paper ver...

Re: Bi-polar GL 1500 Clock (1997)
A friend and I both had 96 wings. The clocks on both bikes would run really fast on damp mornings until we rode long enough, about half an hour or so, for them to dry out. I would then reset it and it would be good for the rest of the day.

Re: Gold wing only tries to start as starter button is relea
You may have a bad battery. If the battery isn't holding a full charge it does not have enough power to spin the engine and provide a strong spark. When you release the starter the battery can supply a spark to start the engine. In your case not quite enough to get it started. The battery can still ...

If the belt breaks it will cause major engine damage. Why take a chance? Replace them and have peace of mind.

Re: Mirrors?
The mirrors on the 1200 are a poor design. You must move the entire housing, not the glass. Over time the weight of the housing causes the ball to wear and not hold the mirror in place.
Have you been trying to move just the glass?

Re: Windjammer Windshield Height
I have a tall windshield on my Vetter. Problem is, I can't see through it when driving in hard rain. Anyone with a solution other than getting a smaller windshield just below my eyes. You can cut the one you have to make it lower. I used a rotary tool with a cutting disk. Just be careful and don't ...

Re: Goldwing 1200 durability
I went to Alaska from Pennsylvania on my GL1200. It had 145,000 miles on it when I started the trip and never gave a thought to having any problems, and I was right. I sold it with 175,000 miles on it, to a local guy. That was 6 years ago and it's stil going strong.
You needn't worry.

Re: fuel lid lock
A good locksmith should be able to re-key the new lock to match your existing key. Buy the lock and bring the lock and the key you want to use to the lock shop. If you want to be sure bring them the old lock first so they can tell you if it can be done.

Re: Lost the keys to my 1977 GL1000
The GL1000 is super easy to hotwire but I no longer have the bike nor the wiring diagam to help you with any info. Sorry.
Just call a locksmith and have a key made. It will be pricey but cheaper than replacing the ignitions switch and fuel door lock.

Does anyone now what these brackets are for?
A friend recently purchased a 1500 that had two slotted brackets protruding from openings in a skirt below the trunk. The holes are ragged and it appears to be an amateur installation. My friend is the 3rd owner, these were installed by the first owner, the 2nd owner knew nothing about their use. If...

Re: 1990 Aspencade mufflers
I have been told that the factory mufflers from some Harleys are a good fit for the 1500. Many Harley dealers have lots of stock pipes that were removed from bikes whose owners wanted louder pipes installed and they sell them at low cost. Might be a good place to look.

I run 40 front 44 rear, Bridgestone Excedras. Front tire went 20,000 miles with no cupping and still had 2/32 tread left. Rear lasted 17,000 with very even wear.

I have a RoadGear rain suit but hardly ever wear the jacket. I have two waterproof breathable jackets so I usually have one of them with me and put the pants on from the rainsuit if needed. The RoadGear suit works well when I use it.

I got a screw in an almost new rear tire. Had it plugged at a repair shop and rode over 12,000 miles on it with no problem. That included a 6,000 mile cross country trip.

Dim lights at a stop are normal. Brake lights use a lot of power and the alternator can't keep up at idle.

I wear polarized sunglasses, they really cut the glare. Leaning back a little when you look at the screen helps too.

You could try a motorcycle salvage yard if there is one in your area. I had good luck getting parts for my 1200 at one near me.

Re: oil change
If you ride a lot 5,000 mile oil change intervals are OK. If you don't ride a lot then change oil at the beginning and end of the riding season. In your case right now I would run the fresh oil you just put in for about 500 miles then change it and the filter. Some of that old black oil your spoke o...

Re: Any suggestions on getting this plug off?
You could try a hammer and cold chisel. Set the chisel on the flat part of the plug at an angle that will rotate it counter clockwise, then strike it with the hammer. A few blows may break it loose so you can turn it with vise grips.

Is it possible that Rotella could cause the same symptom? I just changed to Rotella but haven't had it on the road yet since changing it. Been to busy with other projects. PO was using Valvoline (I believe). It doesn't always happen, but if there is any way for the oil to get out the synthetic oil ...

Re: Oil leak after switching to Amsoil
Viking is correct. I know from personal experience that once the synthetic oil finds that path to the sunlight going back to dino won't stop it. Run that oil as he suggested and find any other bad seals, then replace them as needed.
