Re: cruise control switch won't mechanically engage
This is a pretty common problem. … The solution is to get the grease out of there. A plastic-safe solvent will work, I use CRC contact cleaner... You are an amazing resource! You recognized the actual problem... as opposed to jumping on some other unrelated issue. (Of course the thorough descriptio...

Re: How cold will ya'll ride?
Like PileDriver I rode in the snow today here on Island County. Back when I was commuting Greenbank to Redmond I regularly passed the bank showing 25 degrees. But here in the Puget Sound, moisture is a different thing. Very seldom snow. And even though I'm not supposed to admit this to anyone outsid...

I have the exact same problem! Haven't tried troubleshooting yet. Did you figure out what was causing the problem?... maybe save me some steps.

Re: Heated seats/grips update, still baffling
I would still like someone to tell me if the engine has to be running at a certain minimum RPM for the system to work. Does anybody have an answer to that question? New part arrived. I tested it. The answer to the above is Yes . Since my instrument cluster was not connected, I don't know what the m...

Re: Heated seats/grips update, still baffling
I suspect that, in deference to the comment about abusing the left grip while setting the bike on the center stand, the problem was created when I installed bar backs. I did some more continuity testing hoping to discover where I had stretched the wire. I discovered it was the grip itself. I wrappe...

Re: Heated seats/grips update, still baffling
I THINK I've finally made some progress on determining what is causing my problem. The upshot is that the left grip (connector 71 C) has an issue. I suspect that, in deference to the comment about abusing the left grip while setting the bike on the center stand, the problem was created when I instal...

Re: Heated seats/grips update, still baffling
Wow! This is obviously a difficult situation to troubleshoot. I appreciate WingAdmin giving us the troubleshooting steps. But holy Shiite! That seems like the hard way. I'm searching for something more simple. I have questions: 1) Apparently, in order to test whether the grips/seat are heating by fe...

Same problem on my 2007. I finally just took the ratcheting mechanism out. Just did it yesterday and haven't tested whether the ratchet is necessary to keep the windscreen/windshield in place. Sure hope it isn't.

Re: Handlebar and grip angle leading to pain
themainviking, you're probably right, I want the Helibars. But budget dictates: don't invest in something that expensive unless it really solves the problem. As to my pain issues, they have been diagnosed by physicians. None of them proposed what cihilb had done. Wow! Now that's committing to a solu...

Re: Handlebar and grip angle leading to pain
Thanks for the ideas. I have risers that I've considered trying. Of course those will require nearly as much time to install as the Helibars. So, if risers don't solve the problem, I'm left with two episodes of changing my handlebar format. So my question is, "did you (cihilb) have thumb pain t...

Handlebar and grip angle leading to pain
I've been struggling with pain in my thumbs. It subsided when I hadn't ridden for a week but came back quickly when I started to ride again. During that same time I also didn't use my computer much. Based on all my study of ergonomics, I'm pretty sure horizontal is not a natural hand position. So I ...

I started looking for a harness today. I've searched this forum and think this is the best discussion on the topic. But I wonder if anyone has more experience? I use WingStuff (et.al.) as a source for product ratings. There were some very negative complaints about the Show Chrome. Altho those were i...

Re: How much weight can a 1800 Goldwing pull
Interesting thread. Good input from lots of great people. Could I get any other feedback on the same topic for my situation? I'm considering towing this boat. The boat is 400# + trailer weight. Tongue is pretty light, I'll check the weight. No electric brakes. I'm likely to tow no more than 25 miles...

Re: Which model? (*IF* you were to replace your Wing)
I shudder at the thought. I guess for me the choice would be based on: How my future riding plans have changed. I don't do LD like I used to. But I do ride almost everywhere I go. The changing condition of my physical health. Arthritis in my thumbs is making clutching and holding the throttle diffic...

Re: Aftermarket GPS Suggestions
This may be off topic, but I'm more interested in GPS features. Weather-proof, frequent updates and anti-glare are important. But it seems to me, if I'm going to invest ($300+) in something to route my trip I want 2 things: 1) EASY input to determine/choose my route, 2) vehicle aware settings. EASY ...

Re: Anyone using Hippo Hands?
I bought covers from Bent Bike here in Lynnwood. Unlike the Vetter, there is no stiff structure to them, they're just insulated pockets. They go on the handlebars easily. I did have to open the handlebar hole of the left side to get it around the controls. But a simple strap on each locks them on ti...

Re: Bluetoothing a GL1800
Some great solutions posted here. Seems the best solution is to mount one of the Sena's on the bike to transmit/receive to/from a Sena on a helmet(s). I actually considered that but couldn't work out the electronics. Apparently Steve Schmidt worked it out and Sierra Electronics sells the solution wh...

Re: Breaking up with an older bike
I periodically wonder what to do with the bikes that don't get ridden as much as my GL1800. The idea of finding someone who would love the bikes as much as I appeals to me. But I can't imagine anyone appreciating my 96 K1100LT (105K miles) as much as I. I added a 5 gallon tank, custom made and paint...

Great timing for me to read this article. I was just considering taking on the task. I was hoping to find someone who has tried Ospho. HA! Just under a month ago I was looking for a trailer to have some extra cargo space when running errands... grocery shopping once every other week can fill the trunk and saddle bags quickly. Re: Heated grips or heated gloves?
I agree with the heated grips + hippo hands combo. But cold hands only impacts your reflexes for clutch and front brake. If you're fighting cold feet or any other kind of chill, that's going to impact your reaction time as well. I also wear heated vest and socks. I commuted 100 miles a day regularly...

Re: GL1800 Wheel rim cleaning
For Aluminum polishing (your wheels), this is the absolute best stuff I have ever used. This is the site address http://www.captainrichardsbest.com/ . I was amazed at how little effort it took to remove the oxidation from both my GL1500 wheels and my GL1800 wheels. I followed the directions on the ...
