Re: 78 GL1000 Starting issues

My 82 (fixed ignition) had this same symtom. It turned out to be worn brushes in the starter.

Re: 1978 Hot wire!

Check all wires going to/from the regulator and the three from the stator. I ended up hard soldering all my wires at these two points as corroded connectors are a big problem along the Gulf Coast. Since doing this, I've had no more smoking wires.

I'd love to have those Lester mag wheels. They're getting pretty hard to find. Probably scarce as hens teeth over in the UK.

Re: Carb problems

The Gl1000 has always been a cold natured beast. Did you pull the little screens under the float needle seats? These are missed by a lot of first time "wing fixers". They catch the super fine rust and dirt that made it thought the main fuel filter. If your main filter is old or defective, they can g...

Re: 1982 1100 GW oil dip stick assy, where to find/buy???

Some of these need to have the mounting holes "egged" out with a rat tail file to fit the two bottom studs of the radiator. Other than that they seem to be good parts.

Re: FUEL SYSTEM

I agree with dingdong. Pull the float needle seats and check the filter screens under them. You'd be surprised as to how much super fine rust dust can go through the stock filter and clog these little screens.

I use Continental tubes on my wire wheels. They are much thicker and tend to go down slower when punctured.

Re: 1981 GL1100 and Modern Day Fuels

Two things can cause blue pipes. One is a lean fuel/air mixture. The second is retarded timing. You might check and see if the vacuum advance is still hooked up and working.

Re: Back of 81 Interstate caught on fire!

I had a similar experience with my 82 which sat for almost 2yrs after we got a direct hit from huricane Ike. Turned out the brake peddle was hanging up when depressed and causing the brake to drag. It didn't catch fire but it did smoke and turn the disc a dark blue. A couple shots of oil on the pedd...

Re: Brake Bleeding

Pull the bleeder nipple and check all the holes. Over time they can get clogged up with dirt and corrosion. Also after cleaning, put a dab of never sieze on the threads. This may save you a headache later on.

What kind of clear coat did you use? All the ones I've used either turn dark from heat or just start flaking off.

Re: 1976 3 cylinder wonder

The loss of one cylinder as you described turned to the little filter screens under the float seats on my Wing. I found I could pull over and let the bowls fill up and I had four cylinders again. As long as I kept it under 45, I was able to limp home. That over charging you have is serious. Not only...

Re: Newbie needs help 75 GL1000

Follow the ground cable from the battery to the frame and check for corrosion there and tightness. Also have someone hold the starter button in and clutch lever while you wiggle and tug at both battery cables. I've seen some bad crimp/solder connections here too.

Re: brake lever

The air in the hose will tend to go to the top at the master cylinder. Try cracking the hose at the top and bleed out the air at that point. Then Bleed at the calipers to get rid of any old and bubbles in the calipers. Be sure to cover the "tank" up as the brake fluid can ruin your paint.

Regardless of how weak the springs are from age, the fully extended length is the same. I am though seriuosly considering the Progressive springs made for the stock shocks.

Re: parts source(s) needed

Fully extended, the Progressives are a full inch longer than my fully extended stock shocks. I gave the numbers to Progressive and asked if these were the proper shocks for my 1100 and they said yes. That extra inch though makes them the same length as the ones on my 85 LTD so I may use them there.

Re: 1983 GL1100 STARTER REPLACEMENT PROBLEM

I ditto rbgersons answer. I just tried to put a GL1000 starter in my 1100 and that extra 1/8" will keep it from going in. Since my truck was down, I ended up putting the fresh brush assembly from the 1000 starter into my 1100 starter as I needed my bike now.

I put Progressives on my 82 and though they are excellent shocks, they raised the back of the bike up too far for me. Not only do I have to tippy toe with my feet now, the the slight change in the fork angle is very noticable to me. Low speed (parking lot) handling just is not what it was. I'm looki...

I recently replaced my old light with a Bosch unit I had lying about the shop. Its old and even starting to yellow but is still brighter than the stock unit. Re: 1985 LTD New Owner and couple problems

If you're refering to the three yellow wires to the stator, it doesn't matter which goes to which here. they all do the same thing. Just hard solder them and you be OK. You might keep watch on the connectors to the regulater also. I had mine smoke out right before my eyes. Had I been on the road, it...

I have had the same problems with my LTD. Sometime the switches work, sometimes not. It has bugged me now for 10 yrs. Should you find a cure for this, please post it. I've done everything except dance around the bike butt naked with a rubber chicken in each hand.

Re: 75-79 Front Brake Calipers

The crash bar should fit with no problems. The 78-9 calipers will fit if you shim them out a bit with some washers. I went this route with my 76 some years ago as I had a set of freshly rebuilt 78 calipers and just decided to use them.

if the stock rear fender is still on the bike, thats where the tail light should mount up. The longer verion has two bolts near the tail light so you can remove the bottom half for w...

neither my 76 or 82 have any counterweights installed. I've never had any handling problems either except for some when I had a rear tire go bad.
