Re: ALT BRUSHES

A voltmeter will indicate the condition of the alternator. You should read about 12.8 to 13.5 volts at idle, and your lights should stay bright. Your brushes could be dirty, but shouldn't be worn out at your mileage. I hope you enjoy ever mile.

Re: Loose clutch lever

Check the bushing for wear. FYI You can loosen the nut and tighten the pivot bolt to remove some of the play. Hold the bolt steady and tighten the nut. The nut locks the pivot bolt and keeps it from loosening.

Re: Turn Signal Brain Teaser

I had a similar problem after a dealer replaced the left handlebar control on a friend's bike. The 7 pin connector between the new control unit and the cancel unit (located in the steering stem) was wired incorrectly from the factory. Some of the leads were connected to the wrong pins in the connect...

Re: ABS Light on all the time on my 02' 1800

The GL1800 ABS system is very complex, but there is a troubleshooting guide in the shop manual. The manual explains how to retrive ABS trouble codes and how to systematicly identify the problem. Check it out.

Re: Changing Final Drive Gear Oil (Video)

Great video Cruiseman.

I recommend removing the filler cap first, in case the it is difficult to remove.

Harbor Freight has a pump that fits most gear oil bottles. I find it easier to use than the syringe method shown.

Re: Changing rear brake pads on 202 GL1800A

I always try to clean the pistons before they are pressed back into the calipers. While the old pads are removed, slide the caliper from side to side to check for smooth movement. If the calipers don't slide freely, remove them from the mounting and lube the slide pins.

Re: Brake light not working from the front lever.

You can try cleaning the two switches (cruise cancel and brake lights), but replacement is usually required. Connectors are different sizes so they can't be connecter incorrectly. Make sure your brake lever is lined up properly with the switch when it is installed.

Try to isolate the problem. Plug your headset cord into the passenger socket and hers into the driver socket. Does the problem follow the headset, or is it in the bike?

The adjustment barrel is located beneath the shelter, to the right side of the ignition switch. Same as the earlier GL1800 models.

I would check for loose wiring around the steering stem. Maybe something is caught in the fork bridge.

Re: Wheel Balancers

If your wheels were properly balanced initially, you probably won't notice any difference with Centramatic Balancers. However, as your tires wear, the balance could change. If so, the Centramatic balancers may be able to continue balancing your wheels. I like to spin my wheels, without the tire, on ...

Re: Mirrors: are the mirrors on the 1800 supposed to adjust?

The Phillips head bolt holds the mirror in place. It doesn't have any affect on the ability to adjust the position of the glass. If you remove the glass, you can see it is adjusted by pressing on the edge of the glass.

My 2001 remote is still working without a battery change.
The re-programming steps are in the shop manual, and I have seen them posted on the GL1800riders.com board.

Re: Reinstalling all the painted plastic- fairing- luggage e

I don't think you'll have any problems. First, I would suggest you get a shop manual and access to the online GL1500 parts diagrams. The various fasteners can be confusing, but the parts descriptions will help. The manual shows all the wiring and the proper routing, which is important with the audio...
