Re: water in oil

I have a dime sized drop of coolant on the garage floor after any ride longer than say 35 miles. Oil looks good, coolant looks good, temp never goes past halfway. I don't have a jack (yet) and I can't really get under the bike to locate the leak. It seems to be in the area of the water pump. Can a w...

Re: Intermittent charging problem

I took the battery back to Kmart and even though it is out of the replacement warranty they gave me a new one with not only no questions asked (aside from seeing the receipt) but they apologized for any inconvenience! It is so unusual to see customer service in one of the box stores. We'll see if th...

Re: Intermittent charging problem

Thanks WingAdmin, I wasn't thinking battery because it is only 9 months old (just past the free replacement warranty). It is a Diehard Gold so I guess I'll see what KameApart says about pro rating it.

Thanks Again, Z

Re: Intermittent charging problem

Finally brought my meter home to test my voltages, here are the readings I got. With the battery tender connected 12.7 volts Without the tender connected it drops to 12.4 volts With the key turned on it drops to 10.3 volts When I engaged the starter it drops to 5.5 volts (and it barely turns the bik...

Re: MPG?

You are getting double what I am! But at 32-36mpg my bike is getting double of what my truck gets so I'm happy with that. Maybe you should hook the other two plug wires back up :).

Re: Intermittent charging problem

My battery is less than a year old. Wednesday I went to start start the bike and nothing. Hooked my battery tender up and left it overnight and it started fine. I unplugged the tender that night and the next morning it was dead again. I checked the yellow wires and the connection and there is no cor...

Re: Timing keeps skipping

They are supposed to be able to move and have the spring return them to the belt. If yours were too tight the belt probably moved them and they weren't able to spring back into position to keep tension on the belt therefore enabling the belt to jump a tooth or more. I hope the crunch you heard wasn'...

Re: Timing keeps skipping

When you inspected the belts after the timing skip were they still tight or had they loosened up?
Did you tighten the tension pulley bolts too tight?

Re: GL1100 Back to Life

Jeff: If you plan on keeping the bike you may want to invest in a GENUINE service manual for it (www.helmsinc.com) I think it costs about $40.00. Next a set of box/open end metric wrenches and a set of shallow and deep well metric sockets, you won't get far working on a Honda without them as everyth...

Re: GL1100 Carb Removal/Rebuild

Sorry for the delay in reposting. The rebuild did and didn't go well. The carbs were not rebuildable, bent linkages and jets, stripped screws, cross over pipes crimped and on and on. I found a set on ebay for $100.00 and I rebuilt them and the bike runs awesome. The only remaining issue is a tiny oi...

Gauge Cluster Removal

I am going to be replacing my ignition switch this week. By the looks of things the gauge cluster has to come out. I found two screws on the front and felt maybe two more around the backside. Will these release the cluster so I can gain acces to the ignition switch?

Thanks in advance, Z

Re: Help I'm stranded

Thanks for the posts. I have friends on another site that told me it was probably the ignition switch, and it was. Here is what to do if it happens to you. Take a piece of 12gauge wire and run it from the positive battery terminal to the top of the second fuse from the left. This somehow bypasses th...

Re: What are these?

I don't know if the mystery is solved but I did manage to mount the unknown chrome pieces on Sunday. I'm pretty certain this isn't where they are supposed to go but they look decent so I think I'll leave them on.

Re: What are these?

I have looked all over my bike for where these might go and I am stumped. The two large bolts on the forks are too close together and probably tolarge in diameter to go throught the mounting brackets. The shape and size is correct to cover the calipers. What would happen if I remove both of the fork...

What are these?

Has anyone ever seen these before? They are supposed to be for a GL1100. If anyone has seen them and knows the placement on the bike please let me know. They almost look like they are front cailiper covers but I'm not sure.

Thanks, Z

Re: GL1100I Chrome Covers

Thanks for the suggestions. Shops that re-chrome items are getting very rare, at least in Michigan. The covers that I have aquired up until now are all in terrible shape, none will buff out and I sand blasted the best set I had and blew holes right through them in spots. I will continue looking. Tha...

I have been using JB Weld high temp on my falling apart exhaust. I just want to get through the summer with it then replace it over the winter. So far it has held everywhere I have put it.

PB Blaster is the trick. I would spray all fasteners several times over a 24 hour period. I have used that stuff for years on bolts that I would have bet would snap off and they didn't!

But your pictures and editorials are SO helpful to all of us. When we own old bikes like these we have to work on them ourselves or they would run us to the poor house. I will try to take pictures of everything I do from here on out to do my part.

Britman,

With the choke pulled all cylinders are firing? If so back the idle adjustment screws out 1/2 turn see if that helps.

Re: 1983 interstate

You have to synch the carbs on the bike with it running with the proper valves and guages connected. #3 carb will be your benchmark that you adjust the rest of the carbs to.
