Re: Brakes on 83 GL1100

Thanks for the help Cosmo. You have pretty much confirmed what I was thinking. Just a little discouraged trying to remove the stuck pistons. Thanks again

Brakes on 83 GL1100

The pistons in my brakes are frozen solid. I am sick of going through this every year after the bike has sat for the winter. Has anyone retrofitted Harley or some other brand of brakes on a GL1100?

Lucas Oil Stabilizer

Has anyone used Lucas oil stabilizer? I had a friend tell me when doing an oil change on my bike (1983 GL1100I) to replace one of the quarts of oil with the Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Suppose to help prevent oil leaks. What do you guys think?

Re: Bike Will Not Start

I got the new starter installed and the bike now starts right up.

Looks like my next project is to replace the water pump. I am getting a leak from the weep hole.

Thanks everyone for the help

Re: Bike Will Not Start

I ordered and received a new starter today, but I am having trouble installing it. I am not able to get the shaft on the starter to line up with the sprocket. I almost had the chain fall off the sprocket, which as you know would not be good. Anyone have any ideas on how to line up the starter shaft ...

Re: Bike Will Not Start

That was my plan, to rebuild the starter using the instructions on here, but when I opened up the starter the wires were falling apart. The wires are too brittle, so I don't think that I can rebuild it. My big problem is the wire that comes from the windings and connects to the round plate that the ...

Re: Bike Will Not Start

I was just online looking for a new starter. I found them to be anywhere between $80 and $350. Does anyone know what there is such a wide range in price?

Re: Bike Will Not Start

I used the battery from my truck on the starter, still did not turn. So, I removed the starter, not good. The wires that go to the brushes were broken and very brittle. The wire that is soldered to the metal ring that holds the brushes was also corroded. Looks like I need a new starter. At least I k...

Re: Bike Will Not Start

Wingadmin you are correct, I did hook a battery charger between the negative terminal of the battery and the post on the starter. But you are saying that a battery charger does not have enough amps. My charger puts out 10A. I was not looking to start the bike, just want to see if the starter will tu...

Re: Bike Will Not Start

I just put 12 volt between the battery negative terminal and the plus of the starter. Starter did not turn, so I guess I will be rebuilding the starter this coming weekend.

Re: Bike Will Not Start

I pulled the plugs, turned the ignition to off and tried to start the bike. Still nothing. All I get is a click from the starter solenoid when I push the start button. I next put the bike into first gear and pushed it. Gas cam flying out of one of the cylinders. Push the start button, still nothing ...

Re: Bike Will Not Start

Thanks for the help guys. I replaced the battery with a new one and also replaced the starter solenoid. Still nothing. When I push the starter button, all that I get is a click from the solenoid. Do you think it could be the starter? I have also checked the ground from the battery and it is good.

Bike Will Not Start

I have a 1983 GL1100 Interstate. The bike has been sitting in my garage through the winter and when I tried to start it last week, it would turn over but would not start, which is normal, after sitting all winter, but it eventually starts. Today I tried to start it again, but now it will not even tr...

Re: Bucking at Higher Speeds

I do have the screw type valves. I have to close them just about all the way. When I try to adjust the carbs, the bike starts to rev.

Re: Bucking at Higher Speeds

Well I changed the spark plugs and cleaned the slides. Then I tried syncing the carb, but was not able to. I followed the "how to " instruction, but the needles on my gauges move too much. Any ideas how to settle the needles down? I did use the aquarium valve, which did not help.

Re: Bucking at Higher Speeds

I looked at my carbs last night, but was not able to figure out what you are calling slides. Also, last weekend I adjusted my lifters, so maybe I need to sync the carbs?

Bucking at Higher Speeds

I have a 83 GL1100I. My problem is, if I am cruising along at around 60mph and go to pass someone and hit the throttle hard, my bike bucks and will not go pass 65mph. But if I slowly increase speed, then it is not a problem. Any help would be appreciated.
