Re: head gasket done but one more question

As he said, there should never be fluid leaking from that cap. There is a rubber gasket in the cap that should be sealing against the lip of the radiator neck. When it heats up and pressure builds, once the pressure gets beyond a certain level, the spring-loaded part in the center of the cap pushes ...

Put a voltmeter on the battery, and see what the voltage reading is WHILE you are cranking the engine.

+1 on this. A quality intelligent float charger like the Battery Tender will keep your battery charged at 100% at all times, and will help extend the life of your battery by years.

I got my new E4's over the week end. Counteract beads on the way. Will these valve stems be ok or do you guys recommend something else. Re: Beating The ~80 MPH Limit of the GL1500's Cruise Control

Great article, thanks for posting it. Worked for me on my 2000 GL1500SE. I swapped the female connector terminals in the 22 pin block which I found just pushed out and are right next to each so very easy. Cruise control works up to about a 100 MPH now in 5th. Thanks Same here but I found that the #...

Re: Rpm slow to drop between shifts.

The throttle is purely mechanical and a push pull cable. As long as they are adjusted properly, there is no way the throttle can be open with the grip closed. You could be getting an air leak from the air injection system or other vacuum circuit. Is it a California bike? What happens if you are at ...

Re: Rpm slow to drop between shifts.

Generally there are three things that will typically cause this:

Throttle cable problems - usually a broken push cable and sticky pull cable.

Carbs not balanced correctly.

Intake air leak - causing a too-lean condition. Most common cause is leaky/cracked or disconnected vacuum lines.

Re: I need a battery. What is more important CCA or Ah?

You're right, you will never notice the difference in 5 CCA. What's more important is that you get an AGM battery, because the 1500 really needs one. I can definitely recommend the Motobatt for the 1500 - I've had mine for several years and it still works like brand new. Also highly recommend a Batt...

Re: The frustrating task of finding that PART

The parts aren't expensive. What is expensive is the warehousing of the part for YEARS before it eventually gets sold - and that's what you're paying for. I had a brand new, old-stock mirror assembly for a 1989 PC800 here that I had forgotten that I had. I was going through some stuff and found it, ...

Re: GL 1500 has a high idle but only sometimes

Here is the part# for that rubber mat. It is rather expensive for what it is but that's the way it is with motorcycle parts. I don't know how well a truck inner tube would work in that role but I suspect it would deteriorate rather quickly. 19050-MT2-010 Here is a couple of places to get it. They a...

Re: Brake fluid change video

Not in a million years would I put an open jar of brake fluid inside the saddlebag like that. One moment's inattention, if that were to dump, or even some drops of brake fluid were to drip onto the bottom of the saddlebag, you can kiss that saddlebag goodbye.

Re: E10 petrol? Gasoline.

When on a trip, I fill my bike up with whatever gas I find along the way. But I always try to arrive home with as little gas as possible, and fill up just before I get home at a local station that has ethanol-free gas. I also use that to fill all my gas cans for my small engines. You can find places...

It really depends on the bike. When I did mine, I did the seal (my seal was done and leaking), and I didn't have to remove any bolts or pry anything.

Re: 1980 GL1100 Fork exchangeability and upgrade

Get new progressive fork springs. Then most do not even add air. Saber cycle outa Kansas City has them. After time stock springs will lose the resistance. Also you may want to try some heavier fork oil fluid instead of atf that factory calls for. We would do that on motocross bikes according to air...

Re: Help ASAP. Fork tube alignment.

What year? I usually align the top of the tube (not the top of the cap) flush with the top of the triple tree though I think either is fine so long as both sides are the same. Correct. The proper way is to have the top of the TUBE flush with the top of the triple tree, but you can get away with it ...

Re: Austone Taxi Tire

Wow, that's a scary tire failure. I'm going to say that's either from impact (pothole) or there is some internal failure in the tire (in the carcass) radially across the tire. You're lucky you didn't keep riding on that. You also take off a LOT more plastic than I do when changing the rear tire! All...

You might need to open the throttle a bit quicker - but here's a video from our own Virgilmobile that shows what it should look like: skSa9jbhGgk It might be wise to try it without the engine running, you can get a better visualization: 5sIfMNU4-Wo Sometimes if fuel has congealed in the nozzles, the...
