head swap

Ive heard it being done, i think, how bout swapping 83 1100 heads over to my 1200, nothing is broke here, I just like the idea of being able to adjust my own valves aside from the "idea" that there is some kind of power difference due to the cam difference. I have the parts, actually whole 83 to be ...

Re: 1980 1100 water pump

had a feeling the response to Saber Cycle water pumps would be as it is .... OEM pumps aren't all that easy to find .... having broken the wing down almost that far already, I fully understand that I really only want to do this once!

water pump replacement gl1100

I plan to open up my wing and replace the water pump which is definitely shot ... hopefully, the engine has not suffered any damage from operating with the bad pump. Didn't realize right away the strange knocking was from the water pump. What I did learn was you really need to be aware of how repair...

Re: engine knocking

more under load, wouldn't know how to share sound with all although I know it can be done. Dealing with computer literacy. Also, thinking I may have narrowed the search done to water pump bearings. My search for the cause led me to realize that someone ( and I do recall taking her in for a coolant l...

Re: plugged weep hole/water pump

also, would anybody be able to give me the approximate size of the weep hole ... gonna drill out 10mm bolt that was installed into it and figure I'll try to use weep hole size bit rather than plow thru with a 10mm. If that 10mm spins out and leaves me with a drain hole rather than a weep hole, think...

Re: plugged weep hole/water pump

what would a "steam cleaned" plug look like? Have had all plugs out more than once recently and they all look the same with reddish brown tips and pretty clean, kinda like they should look, only got couple of thousand on them, all highway. Could the head gasket go on all 4? Wouldn't I be blowing som...

plugged weep hole/water pump

so I go looking for weep hole in bottom of water pump and don't see one till I realize that where it is supposed to be according to pictures available is a bolt! Now, I went to pull bolt and it snapped in half after a few turns! Gonna have to drill it out! The question is if it wasn't able to do its...

Re: starter failure when engine warm

RB ... could you be a little more detailed. I had starter out for rebuild as described in "how to", everything looked to be in pretty good condition, only real point of interest was solder connection on wire connecting armature contacts in starter case ( 1 side only ) had gotten hot enough at some p...

Re: Cruise Control alternatives

just a futher reflection on "cruise control/throttle locks" ... as I said earlier, I keep mine set in such a way that I can "hold" a throttle speed, but it is not set so that it locks the throttle which, no doubt, would be a negative in a "hard" stop. I know mine will still return to idle with the s...

Re: Cruise Control alternatives

I have similiar thumb type cruise control, basically just a squeezing lock mechanism around the throttle handle. First, there should be a way to adjust the tension of the unit so that it clamps down tighter, although, I know mine is not so tight that you can't move throttle even when control is enga...

engine knocking

Second question about 1980 1100, engine knocking .... mostly around 3800 - 4200 rpm ... its like, do I have a bad rod? ... but engine runs strong .... do have some faltering, but I really need to sync carbs .... valves have been adjusted and only have slight valve tapping ... engine kinda sounds lik...

starter failure when engine warm

This problem has got me at a loss. Bike is an 1980 1100 standard with Vetter fairing, 25000 miles, I'm 2nd owner and have put on 20000 of those miles. The problem: once the bike is warmed up, 15/20 minutes +, turn her off and try to retart and it is as if battery is almost dead or somebody doubled t...

ok guys, finding out that the spark unit(s) for the 1100 have been discontinued! Does this mean only source is going to be bike salvage? Ebay is showing one available at $120 ea! or a used set with melted out back for $6, thats when they go bad with the melted out core. My 80 1100 standard with vett...

150 mph speedo swap to 1980 1100

Anybody know if the 150 mechanical speedo found on the 1000 can be swapped out into the 1980 1100 which has the 85mph speedo? I ask for 2 reasons one being that I would prefer the 150 and second my existing speedo has decided that 34mph is as fast as it will go? od works as does tripometer. Any comm...

Re: Final drive or tranny gear ratio change??????

.....the fastest comment I find interesting, certainly know that if you get "on it" the 1100 really seems to enjoy going thru the gears between 6000 n 8000 .... but the speedo bottoms out at 85! Not that you need to be going that fast anyway although it would be nice to know ones mph .... speaking o...

Re: Ride height?

Also did the saddle adjustment using an electric meat carving knife. Cut out @ 1 1/2 inches from bottom of foam so as not to alter the upper foam profile that fits into the fitted saddle vinyl. Also removed a little extra were the thighs hang over the front of the saddle when standing. I'm 5'8" and ...

Re: Final drive or tranny gear ratio change??????

it is what it is! Still tend to look for that 6th gear but it isn't there! But have you ever noticed that once you have any awareness of how the gearing works on the 1100, you don't really have to run thru the gears as much as you might on other bikes. You can pretty much leave it in 5th between 30m...
