Re: Trike KIt

If it is a GoldWing owner, usually they are looking at those because they are not quite financially ready for their Wing to be a real trike. Unfortunanly, most end up disappointed with the ride and the amount of effort that is required to turn them. Those kits drive from the rear center wheel, but a...

Re: GL1800 transmission complaints

As I mentioned earlier, 2002 bought in 2013 less than 7,000 miles. The seller told me it snatched a few seconds after changing up to 5th when he bought it at 4,000 miles. I find it extremely hard to believe someone could wreck a perfectly good "Awesome feat of engineering" (not my words) after poss...

Re: saddle bag 2012 vs 2001

I never have but am sure you would need a new rear stay. It is part #14 in the fishe below. The best place to get one would be from a trike shop. Often they are removed and discarded when a Wing is trikes. https://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/hon/50bd2b9af870022a6884f25a/engine-guard Actually, I just...

Re: Hot Start

Then at this point you need a 24k service with spark plugs. You might want to have your valves adjusted too, since the spark plugs need replaced and those need to come out to do a valve adjustment. The other important part about a 24k service is that the coolant gets replaced too. It's 5 coolant cha...

Re: Hot Start

Most will describe your issues as a "hot start surge." To clarify, after turning the Wing off as you've described ... at operating temperature, for a short time (5-15mins), and restarting, it can surge to a point of it dying. The surge will completely quit after about 2-3 mins. A fuel additive will ...

Re: GL1800 transmission complaints

I first posted this in the Valkyrie Riders Club after a ride last Thursday. Good luck with reporting your issue to the NHTSA. It's called ghost shifting. Apparently the term came from 10-speed riders. I've never heard anyone describe it as "transmission disconnect" but you've accurately described i...

Re: 2003 complete restauration

Many of your parts still have good life left in them. On the other hand, certain parts are known to fail. For example, you might want to replace the final drive unit. Another is the drive shaft. Since the engine is out, you might consider replacing the alternator drive gear. I can also tell you that...

Re: Checking oil on a GL1800

On a 5th gen Wing, the oil level is checked why it is still dripping into the sump area. It is called a dynamic read. Be sure to follow Honda's instructions completely. - put it on a center stand - start and run 3-5 mins - check the level between the 2-3 min mark Thanks WingAdmin for catching my er...

Re: Help identify part found under cowl on 2005

The harness with the arrow might be your culprit as to why you turn signal switch arm came loose. Never should any wires or harness be rubbing or touching in the fork area as the forks are fully moved from side to side or moving up and down. That harness needs completely re-routed by following the p...

What makes conventional superior to Honda synthetic for these bikes? Synthetics can cause problems, and I believe Honda has figured that out too. Any time you change oil it will shift better with the new oil than it did with the old. Actually I used both and never noticed a difference in the way or sound in shifting.
That is so true. However, 5th gens even shift better with new oil and cold weather.

Re: Overdrive jumping when shifting (not all the time)

My 2001 GL1800 triked with a dft conversion. Every once in a while I will shift into OD and it will seem to engage, and take off ok, then a few seconds later it will click as if the original shift did not completely engage. Is this a warning of something to come, or is it normal ? Ed Sorry Ed, but ...

Others have bought used PGM-FI parts on eBay and have had problems too. It seems some seller will resell their bad units to recoup their repair costs. Unfortunately, "screwing thy neighbor" is beginning to be the American way.
