If you don't want any problems, pull the carbs, clean and rebuild them.

Re: Too much oil? HELP wanted

1100 doesn't have an electric pump. 1200 and up yes. He has a GL1100, I don't think the gas would flood the carbs if the electric pump wasn't running and going up hill would it ? I had a GL1000 with mechanical pump and it never flooded so I'm not sure about electric. So, if it's a mechanical pump w...

Re: Too much oil? HELP wanted

It sounds like you need a good carb cleaning and adjustment. Did you change spark plugs, you might have cross the wires.

Re: 1981 GL1100i aftermarket signals, 2 wires for a 3 ping plug????

What you have in the picture is a rear flasher, they have only two wires for flasher. The front flasher have 3 wires, ground, parking and flasher. The one's you bought are only flashers no parking. If you want it to flash connect the green and orange/white.

Re: Fork Seals

Alex, on this model there are 2 O-rings on on each side were the air goes in to tubes, it might be leaking from there. If you decide to take them apart, change your springs to progressive and you won't need air in the forks.

Re: slip-on mufflers

I rebuilt a 79 GL1000 a few years back and the mufflers where shot. I did find some Harley mufflers on E-Bay that a guy had taken off is new bike for other types. They were like new and cheap, they looked good on the bike and sounded nice.

Re: Stripping Clear Coat Off Engine Parts/Covers

If your not in a rush, wait for this winter and then take the parts you find ugly and have them powder coated the color you want. I did that on one of my bikes and it looks good.

Re: Fork Seals

Hi, for the first question Yes for the second No if the seals are bad they will both leak . If you think your leaking air, just spray the parts with soapy water.

Re: Clutch problems

If it's the same oil from 2006,you should flush all the oils, brake and clutch. One thing to check is, that little bushing that the rod goes in the clutch handle sometimes the hole gets worn and will cause the handle to far.

Re: GL1000 Plastics restoration

Actually, I painted one of my bikes with Dupli-Color engine enamel and it turn out very nice. If you use this paint, make sure your parts are clean and use a good coat of primer and let it dry a few hours before you paint. What I did was paint 2 or 3 light coats of paint ( tacky between coats ) enou...

Re: engine mount oil leak

This maybe crazy but, take the bolt out and clean it out real good then with a light check and see where it's leaking from. Now here is the crazy part, if you see where its leaking from and its not a big leak, measure the distance in the hole and drill a hole under true the chanel maybe you can plug...

When I change head gaskets, I have the heads resurface to make sure they are strait. While the heads are off, I change the valve seals at the same time.

No RPM

Hi guy's, I was working on my 84 standard and notice the RPM gauge not working. I check all the wires and everything looks to be good. Is there a way to check the RPM gauge ? Can it be the modual that's causing the problem, does the gauge run on 7 volts and can I run a wire from the coil to the gauge.

Don't worry, it wont be the last time you see stuff like that. I have done a few old wings that I rebuilt and you would be surprised on what I found, scotch tape on wires, wood screws holding parts and small speaker wires for lights.

I just did mine and measured from the edge of the bowl to the top of the float on both sides to make sure the floats are even on both sides.

Re: Working on carbs

From what you are saying and the looks of the intakes, it might be smart to rebuild or at lease clean the carbs and check the floats. If you'r going to do this, change all the O rings you can see.
