Re: TIMING MARKS I NEED TO UNDERSTAND

For the record, it can damage the valves to manually turn cams and cranks around to set the marks without belts on. If the crank is at TDC (for any cylinder) and the cams are "manually turned around" a valve will contact a piston. There is a procedure in the factory manual to set timing that must be...

Re: Valves and Pistons

The fact that the damage has hammered the perimeter of the piston my concern would be that the upper ring grove has been deformed and is pinching the ring in the groove. No way to know for sure other than disassembly of the engine.

Re: Headlight out- suggestions?

Starter button needs cleaning. When the starter button is pressed it disables the head light and energizes the starter solenoid.

Re: What year is this master cylinder?

The master cylinder pictured is not original to a GL1100. All used a separate plastic reservoir attached to the master cylinder. 1980 to 82 use a 4 screw mount and in 83 it has a 2 screw mount.

Re: I think my swing arm was bent out, perhaps.

That is perfectly normal. The drive unit / wheel assembly are clamped up against a shoulder on the axle by the axle nut on the drive side. The shoulder is then clamped in the swing arm by the pinch bolt as shown in your picture.

OK................"Belt tensioning is not accomplished by the springs. Their only purpose is to help hold things in place while you are working on it. ".........Unfortunately Mother Honda disagrees with this statement.

Re: repainting dash on the instrament cluster

can you show how you got the cover off from the fuel and temp gauges ??? I had mine apart to change light bulbs and wanted to clean the inside of the fuel and temp glass and couldn't get it apart in the short time I spent in it. At the time getting it back together was more important than clean lens...

Re: CLUTCH WONT RELEASE

OK....... I will throw my 2 cents into the hat..... I had a similar situation happen to me about 150 miles from home. The clutch cable broke, hence the clutch wont release (similar to your situation). To get home I warmed up the engine so it would start easily. With the engine off I would put it int...

Re: Rear Axle

The OP said the wheel turns and the axle does not. That rules out the inner race of the bearings. If it was seized on the inner race and the wheel turns so would the axle. since the axle does not turn it is seized to either / both the caliper bracket or the drive unit. That is why I suggested removi...

Re: Rear Axle

OK.... So the axle is seized up in a stationary component. That can only be the caliper bracket or the drive unit. I would start with the caliper bracket. remove the caliper and the strut rod. the bracket should now be able to rotate around the axle. next remove the three nuts holding the drive to t...

on the left side, the side the axle comes out, did you use a long screwdriver / bar inserted into the cross drilled hole and try to turn the axle? also is the caliper bracket able to rotate ( unbolt the strut rod ) ? trying to figure out where the axle is binding up. are the three nuts holding the d...

Re: Oil still leaks from Water Pump weep hole

OK...... The only paths for oil to get to the weep hole is past the oil pump seal, the O-ring between the oil pump and front cover or the three bolts that hold the water pump to the cover. If the seal or o-ring were leaking the oil will still have to pass by the rear water pump bearing which is also...

Re: Oil still leaks from Water Pump weep hole

You never mentioned replacing a seal. There is a seal for the oil pump that needs to be replaced. See pics 73 (attached), 105 and 106 of the water pump R&R article.

To answer your question of where coolant could leak into the crankcase there are only a few options (ignoring a "crack some where" possibility) that i tried to show in the attachments. To get a time line on things…… 1-Original heads on the bike, had an issue with one of the heads. Was the bike runni...

Re: Carb cleaning fuel additive.

I wouldn't put much hope in it fixing your problem........... But it is cheap and easy! So sure stop by your local auto parts store or Walmart and pick up a bottle of your favorite brand and pour it in, go for a ride and see if it helps. You still have your back up plan of rebuilding them later. Bes...

Re: Rebuild engine or replace?

I have had my 83 since 95 and it does the same thing. Smokes on start up and clears as soon as it is warmed up. My opinion is oil is migrating past the rings while the engine is shut down and is pushed into the exhaust upon start up and it is the oil in the exhaust that is burning. Having checked pl...

OK....... if I understand correctly what the OP is stating is the right carbs (#3 and #1) are getting fuel and the left carbs (#2 and #4) are not. And the "Fuel Tube" the OP is referring to is the "red straw" that is in the Accelerator pump circuit in the plenum and not referring to the transfer tub...
