Hopefully you won't find what I did after I got my 2003 home from where I purchased it in Illinois. After replacing it with a new filter, the MPG did not change.

An easier way is to drape cloths under the master cylinder to catch any drips, crack the banjo on the hose loose and pull the lever, tighten the banjo prior to allowing the lever to return.
