Re: 2006 GL1800 Luggage Rack Broken Tap

I've been a toolmaker for 45+ and when we break off a tap, you can sometimes use a tap extractor designed specifically for the size tap you have broken off. If it's a 2-flute tap, maybe 5mm you get an extractor for that tap. They're available in 2, 3 and 4-flute varieties. If that doesn't work we wo...

Re: Cargo Trailer and Hitch for my 2009 1800 Wing

I'll second the swivel hitch comments. I feel confident that it'll save my hide if the trailer decides to do a flip or two....there ARE naysayers, but that's OK with me. I have a friend that actually looked at getting one-wheeled (Unigo) trailer and he said that it's just too small for any practical...

Re: Smokey reverse.

Maybe something had dripped onto the exhaust and boiled off as you were backing out.... ~Merry Christmas~ That would be my thought as well. Did you park it on the side stand? Did it smell like coolant by any chance? I've had that happen and did what you were explaining.... only I didn't use reverse.

Re: Clutch Adjustment

If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and get a set of Speedbleeders. They make the process even better and faster, and can do it all by yourself....get enough to do the brake system too. Makes it super easy the "next" time too.

Re: Clutch Adjustment

There are no adjustments that I'm aware of. When was the last time you bled the system? If you have air in there, it won't work to it's full travel. Needs to be completely bled every-other-year.

Re: 1800 spits up

I have never had the temp rise above the half-way mark. In my opinion, a mark above the half-way is an overheating situation. I'm thinking that you have air trapped in the system somewhere and the system has an air pocket that can essentially "erupt" when the coolant comes in contact with the hot sp...

Re: Necessary to periodically re-inspect for frame cracks?

I too have an '03, and every time it's at the dealer for anything, I have them check the frame for cracks. So far, nothing. But I will continue to do so. It's kinda like knowing there's a chance of cancer because it's hereditary and you go in for the annual check up.

Pull the battery negative terminal and wait 5 minutes, reconnect and try again before going any further. Sometimes, the system has to be rebooted, so to speak.

WD-40 works great too. Just spray on and wait a few minutes and rub off, using your finger to avoid scratching anything.

Are you thinking about going wireless or sticking with the cables? I don't have any experience with the wireless or Bluetooth, but I do have the wired headsets from EDSETS. I got the high-end system with the THUNDERCLAP speakers, and I'm very pleased with them. If you get the microphones that mount ...

I'm not trying to bash any particular tire brand, but it seemed to me that the Dunlops were way noisier than the Bridgestones the more they wore.

Re: Gen2 Battery replacement - Remove Seat ?

I need to change my Battery on the GL1800 2nd GEN. Changing the battery is not a big deal UNLESS I have to remove the *%^&^% seat. I HATE putting the STOCK seat back on that friggin bike. I have the tapered screws. You know it's bad when somebody came up with the idea of tapered screws. Geez, I hat...

Re: Adding a CD changer

No. There is no USB plug/connector in the trunk of 2001-2008 gl1800s Well, that's a shame. So it's just another audio jack? No, it's a multi-pin plug that goes into the player, and hooks up to the controls on the handlebar and will show the track and other data on the display. Much more than the au...

Re: Newby to 1800 CB secrets?

They all have the controls. Option if you want the CB, but you can still get one, either factory of aftermarket which would be cheaper, or watch ebay or classifieds on this and other sites. Pretty easy to install, and the hardest part is getting the antenna tuned.

Re: Tires - Edumacate me

I've had both Bridgestones and Dunlops, and prefer the Bridgestones way more that the Dunflops. I'm a Darksider using a run-flat, and I'll never go back to a MC tire on the rear of a Goldwing. Other bikes, not a problem with standard tires. But Bridgestones are highly recommended by me, (If that mea...

Re: Rear Brake Pedal has no pressure

Check fluid level, if low then start looking for signs of leaks and report back. Low fluid level can be a sign of significantly worn pads. Replace them if that's the case, but you said you have no "pedal" which probably means you'll have a leak somewhere. I'll see if I can post a diagram of the GL b...

Re: all balls bearings steering kit

I would prefer the tapered over the regular anytime. They have greater contact area and are less likely to cause "notchy" steering where the balls tend to dent into the races and makes the steering less than smooth. Since the tapered bearings have greater contact area, the steering is more rigid and...

May LOOK fine but could be broken internally and not visible at all. Need to do some continuity probing with a meter to determine if the wires are ok.

Re: oil pressure while cranking

When I change the oil, I'll take it for a ride a few miles to get things warmed up a bit, drain and new filter and refill. Start the engine and within a few seconds, usually no more that 5, I'll have oil pressure. Since It was run just a few moments earlier, the oil has coated everything in the engi...
