Re: Rear shock fell apart

I looked at the thread for the top eyelet and it is perfect, no metal shavings or signs of cross threading or anything weird. I think if I want to attempt to put it back together I'll need to build a jig to compress the shock. The springs are internal so I'll probably build a little cage to attach t...

Re: Protective Clothing

I'm not ATGATT but I am actually fairly close. Helmet, always. Jacket, 99% of the time. Boots, always. Gloves, always. Motorcycle pants, 50% of the time. I know I could be in an accident where no amount of gear would help. But the same is true when I'm in a four wheel vehicle. But if for some reason...

Re: 82 gl1100I not firing

To see if fuel is moving, unhook the fuel line from the carb and insert into a container (may need to use a longer hose). Turn off the kill switch and crank the engine.

Re: 82 gl1100I not firing

May sound silly but is the petcock turned on? If yes, is there fuel flow? How does the inside of your gas tank look? How's the fuel filter? Just going on the assumption that if you have GOOD spark then you may not have fuel.

Rear shock fell apart

I was removed the rear wheel to get a new tire put on at the Honda dealer. I got the wheel from under the bike and was leaning it against the bench when I heard something fall under the bike. Yeah, the rear shock fell apart. Are these worth trying to disassemble and rebuilding our am I better off ju...

Re: Gettin her back

That's a real bummer he treated your girl so poorly and didn't even bother to pay it off. But you must really enjoy getting the old gl's back on the road. I've kinda wondered what ever became of the first gl1100 I put back on the road. The guy didn't seem too mechanically inclined. I dread to think ...

Re: Where are all the '85 GL1200 LTD

Both, really. A well running example usually goes for a bit more than a carb model. And there just aren't that many. I missed a really cheap opportunity into one this summer. Still kicking myself.

This guy rode a gl1100 around the world, through the sahara and many other off the pavement situations. So, dirt roads? No problem.

Re: Fairing lowers

There should be a small bracket attached to the bottom mounting point of the radiator..if they are not there you are missing the part. This bike is all about missing parts, lol. I'm fabricating some brackets. Just trying to make it right as much as possible. Probably the original owner spent a boat...

Fairing lowers

Just got in a set of fairing lowers for my 83i. It doesn't seem to have the bracket or stay for the lower mounting point. Can someone post a pic of where they're supposed to mount? The top two are easy. Seems like this bike hasn't had lowers on it for a while. The dipstick is mounted right in the wa...

Fun with abs

My 83i came with the right side of the fairing missing a bit. The hole was covered with black duct tape and had three mystery toggle switches. The most difficult part was cleaning up the tape residue. Anyways, a 12" by 12" by 1/8" thick sheet off eBay for $6.90, a can of abs cement, and a can of abs...

Re: where on earth disappears the oil?

When you checked the oil was it on the center stand on level ground? I only ask since last time I checked mine it showed it was nearly empty until I noticed the lean angle of the bike. When I put it on the center stand there was a rock or something under one side. So I moved it a to a level spot and...

Rear caliper off 1983 gl1100 interstate

I needed a rear caliper for my 83i and I ended up with two. Got this one off eBay for $60 shipped. I'd just like to recoup some of the cost. Shoot me a decent offer. US only please.
Or trade for fairing lowers would be great.

Re: Rear caliper

I ordered a rear caliper on eBay that was taken off an 83 interstate. And then I picked up a 85 aspencade frame from Craigslist. It still had some parts on it that I wanted. I took off the fuse block and some other parts and noticed the rear caliper looked familiar. Side by side on the bench I would...

Likely the return port on the rear master cylinder is clogged. If you look in the gl1100 articles section, you'll find a "how to" for getting the master cylinder fixed up.

Re: remove drive shaft 83 1100

Looking at the manual, the drive shaft should just pull out of the swing arm with the circlip removed.
If it's not coming out so easily, the swing arm may have swollen internally due to rust. But I've personally never had an issue with one.

Re: Upper pegs

I bought my wing cause I like my feet in the standard position as opposed to the feet forward my cruiser had. The wing came with highway pegs installed but I haven't had the chance to use them yet. But I wouldn't use them in traffic.

They're probably ideal when you're crossing the open prarie.

So, will any gl1100 rear caliper work or do i need one off an 83 interstate?

Rear caliper

I have a 1983 Gl1100 interstate. The rear caliper is toast. The po had snapped off the bleeder screw flush with the housing. I tried drilling into the screw and removing it with a screw extractor. The side of the housing broke off the length of the bleeder screw. The best part is the front l...
