Re: GL1000 starting system

Thanks for all the info, especially the wiring schematic. I disconnected the two wires, green and green/red at the clutch lever and did a continuity check with an ohmmeter and got nothing with the clutch lever in or out. I'm assuming that I should have continuity with the clutch pulled in?

GL1000 starting system

I put an engine in a GL1000, Before installing the engine I changed the neutral indicator switch which was badly corroded. I left the wire from the switch unconnected to the indicator light and tried the starter with the bike in neutral. Nothing happened so I then hooked the indicator switch to the ...

Can Comstar wheels be put on a 1975 GL1000?

I posted a question awhile back about an alleged 1975 GL1000 that has Comstar wheels. I had not yet seen the frame number because of a Vetter fairing and numerous after market lights and accessories in the way. Someone suggested that the bike was not a 1975 but after removing the fairing I found the...

Comstars wheels in 1975

I bought a GL1000 from a guy whose father owned it. He can't find the title so I didn't pay very much for it, but he claims it is a 1975 bike. I can't read the serial number on the frame. because it has a Vetter fairing on it and a lot of wiring in the way. I am going to get rid of that but this bik...

Re: kick starter

thanks for the confirmation on the engine year. I bought the engine because it had about 170 lbs. compression on each cylinder, but the rebuilt carbs that are going on it are from a '76 and I understand that the cam grind is milder on the '78 engines so will that be a problem? If so , I have '76 cyl...

nuetral switch rebuild

Anyone ever successfully taken a gl1000 neutral switch apart? I am getting ready to put an engine into the frame but I decided to make sure the neutral switch was nice and clean so as to avoid the green light from hell. Pulled it and made a four-pin spanner wrench to remove the contact assy.. Very h...

Re: 76 cylinder head on 78 engine

That's right, the '76 cam is a little hotter than the '78, but I am also installing rebuilt '76 carbs which should work just fine with the "76 cylinder heads that have their original "76 camshafts. I can't see any difference in the heads themselves, just thought I'd ask in case there is.

Trying to start a 1976 GL1000. The battery is new . When I hit the starter it whips right over the first time but then if I hit the button again I get a kind of buzz and nothing else. Turn the key off and wait a little and try again and the same thing happens, I can hear and feel the solenoid click ...

aftermarket dipstick

Picked up a 1976 GL1000. It has a dipstick that protrudes from under the radiator, and was originally sold by J. C. Whitney. It is no longer available and no information on the level of the oil when the crankcase is full so does anybody have any information on this? The little window is useless.

Can anybody tell me if the fuel sender unit from an 1100 or for that matter, any other Goldwing can be used in a 1976 1000? I have two units from 1976 Goldwings and neither unit checks out as good. They were cleaned very carefully bur I can't get proper ohm readings from either one, I have used both...

Re: replacing timing belts

Both the Honda shop manual and the Clymer manual say to set the engine to TDC for cylinders 1 and 2, then rotate the engine 90 degrees before replacing the cams, otherwise you run the risk of bending a valve when you torque the cam holders into place. The cams are in and torqued, the cam drive gears...

Pulled the heads on a gl1000 and replaced gaskets and seals. I took the timing belts off to replace them as well. Before replacing the camshaft assys., I put no. 1 cylinder on TDC and then rotated the crank 90 degrees so as to avoid piston and valve contact. What I want to be sure about is what to d...

Cleaning up a pair of gl1000 cylinder heads I found some erosion around the coolant ports on one of the heads. Re: valve grinding

Yeah I know about lapping the valve to the seat after the seat has been ground and I was pretty sure that you can't grind the valves. I've done Honda 750 heads and we always replaced the valves with new, so I thought that that would be the case with the Goldwing. Anyway, thanks for the confirmation.
