Re: What now....?

You mentioned that the carbs have been rebuilt. Setting the floats at the proper level can be a bit of a hassle. (speaking from experience  ) They HAVE to be CORRECT. Recheck these from heel to toe. They must be the same measurement across. My 1981 calls for 15.5 mm from base of carb. Not 15.8...

Re: Where to find brake hoses?

A search on e bay should yield good results. I would recommend steel braided brake lines. I bought a set for $80. (yes all four lines) There is a seller from Canada that carries them on e bay. It is a VERY good investment. Makes a big difference. However, bleeding the brake lines after replacement i...

I did the same thing. It does make a noticeable difference on startup and on low end power. Reset spark gap to 35 , it makes a difference. Regards, Johnny

Re: progressive springs and air

What type of oil you use depends on what you want for a comfortable drive. Some recommend ATF 20w or even 10w. Progressive recommends 30w. I run 30 and it works for me. Trial and error. Regards, Johnny

Re: progressive springs and air

You shouldn't need to add air with the progressive springs.
But if ya wanna play around with it, why not? I kept my air fittings on the front just to have them, but have never used it. Regards, Johnny

Re: Front Master Cylinder - '80 GL1100

Probably, These brake lines can be a B****h to bleed sometimes. Did you wrap white plumbers tape around the threads of the bleeder screws? If you didn't, you will be chasing your tail. Regards, Johnny

Re: Front Master Cylinder - '80 GL1100

Put a zip tie on front brake lever after you have pumped several times. let it sit overnight. Excessive air in the brake lines is the cuprite. Regards, Johnny

Re: GL1100A Fork rebuild

You cant go wrong with progressive springs. Well worth the money. You will not need air for the shocks. It is also easier to leave the shocks on the triple tree as you work on them. You will have to use less fluid then the Honda manual says. The amount escapes me at the moment, but it is worth notin...

Re: Fuel Gauge Help

The older wings gas gauges are not the most accurate to begin with. Mine is off by about a gallon. It shows its ready to go to reserve, when I still have 2 gallons or so left. I just keep an eye on the odometer at start looking for a gas station at around 160 miles. I did clean the sending unit and ...

Re: Fuel Gauge Help

The easiest way to dope out fuel gauge problems is to, with the key on, remove the seat and touch the two leads from the float to each other- if the gauge reads full, The gauge is fine. If the tank is actually less than full- then suspect the sending unit. Regards, Johnny

Re: GL1100 head gasket replacement

Pick up a $5.00 mirror at a garage sale. Use a spray tacky glue and glue a piece of 100 grit sandpaper to the mirror. Place head on mirror and sand back and forth and circular, using light pressure. Mirrors are VERY flat, surprising results can be achieved by such a simple process. Regards, Johnny

Re: Timing

Regardless of any other advice from a somewhat dubious poster, Do a carb sync, it can make a world of difference. If it comes down to this, pull the heads and check piston and valves. If valves are bent, refurb the head or buy a couple off e-bay. A bit of a learning curve but not all that hard. I re...
