Re: Vessel JIS Impact Screwdriver

I concur with your review, and would like to add a couple of points... * This particular item is strictly a JIS +2 driver, which should handle most motorcycle maintenance chores. If you need a JIS +3, Vessel sells one, both via Amazon and Vessel's US distributor, JDV Products (vesseltools.com). * If...

Re: All you need to know about the new 2018 Goldwing

As I lay in bed falling asleep last night, this thought came to mind: The trunk/rear seat on the new Gold Wing is an OPTION. It can be added to the non-Tour version of the bike, or deleted from the Tour version if you don't want it. It is removable - it is NOT an integral part of the bike's back en...

Re: 2018 GOLDWING SPECIFICATIONS

Having said that, I wonder if the removable trunk kit opens up the possibility of an after-market larger trunk? Maybe some engineering genius can design and build a trunk that will using the current trunk's mounting system without compromising the weight distribution of the bike too much. It would ...

Re: All you need to know about the new 2018 Goldwing

...And I'm not sure how people are using 87 octane in their GL1800s as my grandpa's 2014 GL1800 (in trike form) produced markedly noisier engine output and a very noticeably worse feeling ride with 87 as opposed to 91. It's possible that California's "blends" are just worse in quality than the rest...

I notice on the new Gold Wing, that the "crash bars" appear to be encased in plastic:
Can I disagree with you (again)? Are you sure the crash bars just aren't painted black? It sure looks that way to me - sticking out through a hole in the bodywork.

Re: All you need to know about the new 2018 Goldwing

Compression ratio is now 10.5:1, up from the previous GL1800's 9.8:1. More than likely this is going to require the use of premium fuel. The ability to use regular fuel in Goldwings has long been a selling feature, particularly those Goldwings that travel the world where premium high-octane fuel ma...

10.5 compression ratio. Premium gas required???
Unlikely with modern engine electronics. My 2015 Mazda3's motor has a 13.0:1 CR, and calls for 87 octane. I run the cheapest regular I can find.

Re: 2018 GOLDWING SPECIFICATIONS

Not sure what you mean by keeping the stroke the same by making it up elsewhere. The engine only gained about 5HP. They added valves but that didn't seem to make any difference. Maybe some in the midrange according to ulimatemotorcycling.com but nothing significant. Compression ratio? Not sure that...

Re: 2018 GOLDWING SPECIFICATIONS

My thoughts after reading Honda's site, insta-reviews by Cycle World and Rider, and some other folks' initial comments... I'm old enough to remember the GL1800 intro back in late 2000. Lots of talk about "not your father's Goldwing", etc. Folks seemed pleased with the better power & handling, not so...

Re: 2018 GOLDWING SPECIFICATIONS

It is impossible to please everyone. IKR? I'm still miffed that my 2001 GL1800A didn't come with a cassette player... Appears they stretched the stroke and came with a smaller bore? Why not just keep the same bore? Make the bore even larger, if you're set on changing the bore (snipped the rest) Jus...

Re: How to flush your cooling system

As long as the bike is on the center stand, and there is nothing blocking an internal passage, removing the coolant drain bolt will drain ALL of the coolant from the radiator and engine. Keep in mind that when Honda specifies 3.6 quarts as the capacity of the cooling system, it's including the cool...

Re: How to flush your cooling system

Doing the coolant flush yesterday per the article's instructions, and stumbled across something. The service manual says that the cooling system for a GL1100 holds 3.6 quarts. However, during the flush process I found that I was only adding about 2.5 quarts of distilled water during each flush/fill ...

Re: Heated grips or heated gloves?

A bit off topic here. I vote only for gloves. Keep in mind that when the hands get cold, it is because the body does not have enough heat to keep them warm. On a bike, this may be the wind removing heat fast from the body. But heating the hands does not heat the body, as when the hands are cold the...

Re: Rear ContiMotion Tire May Lose Air

Tell me, when they mounted the replacement tyre, did they clean the rim of the wheel? Some tyre workers do not bother, and can cause leaks later on. Too often it is "Fast and furious" to get the tyre on, no checks (not the money type), and out the door so that they can get back to reading the lates...

Re: Heated grips or heated gloves?

I've just been on the Hippo Hands website where it says they are stopping production. Sid They were a great idea for their time, and they worked *wonderfully* on the Z-1 Kawasaki that I owned before the Wing. You had to take 'em off if the temp was much over 45F because they were too warm, even wit...

Re: Heated grips or heated gloves?

If you go the Hippo Hands route, be careful that they don't rub up against any of the switchgear on the handlebars. I'd had an aftermarket cruise control installed on my 1100 Aspy at a rally during the summer (a story in and of itself), then slipped on my late-70's Hippo Hands for a cold weather rid...
