Re: Stripped seat bolt mount holes

The previous owner of my bike had stripped out the threads in my frame where one of the rear crash bars bolts into place. The way they "fixed" it was to fasten the crash bar in place with a zip tie!!! And...to make matters worse, this is the same bolt used to hold my aftermarket trailer hit...

Re: Handlebars closer to me.

I went about 12,000 miles in the OEM position - then bought the Risers that lifted and spread the bars -- for about 12,000 miles Then changed to the risers that lifted and stayed the same space for about 12,000 miles. This past week I went back to OEM -- I remember the way the bike handled and drove...

Re: Stripped seat bolt mount holes

Mine was a bit buggered up -- but I chased it with the correct tap and cleaned it up
There was still some meat in the hole so it worked OK -- the last (first?) 3 turns are missing so it acts like a pilot hole .
Tighter isn't always better -- some people are really heavy handed on fasteners...

Re: what tire to buy

Personally - my opinion - Once a tire is cupped it still is safe to ride - However it is an uncomfortable feeling -- For ME - I can feel the scallops especially at low speed - The effect of the cupping does not seem to cause poor traction that I have noticed As of right now I have put on an extra a...

Re: what tire to buy

My experience indicates the following : I am really consistent about checking tire pressures and run Centramatic balancers on every wheel - I have run the 709/704 Bridgestone combo - 2 sets already - I average 9000 miles of use but they are really good - sticky, and quiet and did not cup - good in ...

GL1800 Passenger backrest ('02 model)

I was cleaning the garage and found the OEM backrest I took off when I bought my Diamond seat - This backrest was on the bike for 25,000 miles and then placed in a box in the corner - It is really in good shape -- If you can use it... ? I would take $100 shipped to you in the lower 48 Or make an off...

Re: I'm feeling dark... new Austone Taxi Tire

Darkside Austone update! Just installed my Austone on my 1500 and took it for the first ride. It handles and corners GREAT! But it's rubbing something under the fender when I hit bumps. I've read of others having this problem, so I kind of expected it. So far, I can't see where it's rubbing. Anyone...

Re: Bias Ply Tires on an 1800?

The guy who suggested the American Elite bias says that a bias will last longer. He showed me his rear tire with 17K on an 07, and it's still in pretty good shape. I'm used to getting 10-12K out of the Avon's on my 1500 for years, and would like to do better with the 1800. The 1800 is a notorious t...

Re: Bias Ply Tires on an 1800?

If you are looking to change to a Bias ply tire that some have used (not me) with decent reports of success Look at the Michelin Commander II - it comes in sizes that will work with the rear being the same slight oversize. I run them on my Suzuki GS850GL which was designed for bias ply tires in 1983...

Re: Gl1500 Excessive peg scraping

I still maintain that the riding style must adapt to the typ of bike one is riding. A Goldwing has some giddy up, but it is not a sport bike. Advertisements or commercials with professional riders may make it appear sporty, but it is still the Cadillac of motorcycles. People don’t buy Goldwings for...

Re: Left saddle bag will not open

I had this happen to my GL1500 trunk - nothing I tried would get it to release, even trying to release it from underneath, fishing up to the mechanism. What I ended up doing in the end was removing the seat, drilling a small hole in the front of the trunk (where it would be covered by the seat), an...

Re: Gl1500 Excessive peg scraping

After another short group ride today, and using the pivot shoes out so they hit first technique, I'm even more happy with the shock upgrade. Only scraped once, on a slow speed, sharp corner. Hope to be able to get the front done in the next week or so. I really appreciate the advice and help form e...

Glad this came back up -- Does anyone have any REAL WORLD (use by you) experience with the Commander II on the Wing? Any radial vs Bias Ply thoughts that could be germane to the conversation? As stated by me earlier - I LIKE the Michelin Commander II as I run a set on my GS850 (smaller and lighter ...

My '02 currently has 57,000 miles on it - I have had no trouble with it since I got it a few years ago at 25K - I anticipate it will be the last Goldwing I will ever own as I approach retirement and advancing age - My son recently purchased a lightly used (37K) '03 which is nearly the exact same mo...
