That's the spline drive with a fresh coat of grease.

Re: How to remove and reinstall your rear wheel

Did the spline drive come out of the wheel when you removed the final drive? If it did, you would not see the splines that need to be greased. Look at photo #37. That's the spline drive. The spline drive has 5 pins about 3/8" diameter that need grease as well. They slide back into the 5 correspondin...

Re: How to replace your air filter

I would look for the fuse block connection to the air filter box. It appears in this photo that it may just be clipped onto the box with tabs on either side of the block.

Re: Fork question

I will have to check the tubes a little more closely to see if the grooves are more or less severe than I know. I dragged my finger nail across the tube that my guy pointed out and could barely feel anything. If I try the J-B Weld fix I will let you all know. Just a quick question from my previous p...

Re: Fork question

Wow! That's definitely worth a try. I'm assuming that the dust seal on my GL1100 will pry up in a similar fashion as this one pried down?

Re: Fork question

Thanks for the replies! How do you use that Seal-Mate, and are there any tutorials out there regarding seal replacement. I've got PDF's of both the factory and Clymer manuals but haven't delved into them much since the graphic quality is poor and hard to read/see photos. Guess I'll start looking for...

Fork question

I have noticed my right fork is leaking. On a recent stop at my trusty M/C repair shop for a new tire I pointed this out to my repairman to see if he would do the work. He said I would need new stanchions because mine had scoring (grooves worn in them). Upon taking a closer look I could see what app...

Re: How to repack and tighten your steering head bearings

I'm at the torquing stage of my adjusting nut and unlike this procedure, the Clymer and Honda service manuals do not tell you to over-torque, turn steering head lock to lock, loosen to finger tight, then over-torque, etc. They say just to torque to 11 ft./lbs., turn head lock to lock, and re-torque ...

Re: How to repack and tighten your steering head bearings

Actually, on the GL1100's the gauge cluster needs to come off to allow the bridge to be removed. The wiring harness just doesn't have enough slack to allow cluster and bridge to come off together. The bridge has started to loosen for me with a little leverage between the bottom of the bridge and the...

Re: How to repack and tighten your steering head bearings

Well, I'm finally getting started on this, 2 years after my last post, on my GL1100 and I'm having trouble getting the stem bridge off the top of the fork tubes. I have removed the instrument cluster and was wondering if I need to remove the ignition switch and if there is some residual tightness on...

Re: Leftover part after reinstalling rear wheel

Glad I could help! When I'm working on something that's unfamiliar, I will bag the parts and label them. It's too easy to lose track of all the bits and pieces. As for the spacer being shown outside of the lines, I don't have a clue. I don't think it makes any difference but it does make it difficul...

Re: Leftover part after reinstalling rear wheel

I've had my rear wheel off several times for tire replacement and I've been scratching my head about this for awhile, but it appears you've figured it out in your second post. There are actually 2 spacers, or collars as the parts manual calls them, where one is part of the rear wheel assembly and th...

Re: Will back wheel come off 82 without final drive?

I got lucky with mine. I've got Hondaline bags and trunk and they come off with just a twist of a key. Sometimes I'll ride around with out anything on (the bike, that is) and it feels almost like a naked wing. Now, If they would make a fairing that would come off like that!

Re: Will back wheel come off 82 without final drive?

...and how easy can it be to slide the wheel splines back onto the drive splines. The tolerances on the splines are so tight that it's difficult to put them together even when the wheel and drive are off the bike. Maybe with the bike in gear, getting the wheel splines to mesh with the drive splines ...

Re: Will back wheel come off 82 without final drive?

Is there that much clearance between the wheel with the rotor in place, and the left swing arm to pull the wheel off the final drive? If so, can I do this with my '81 GL 1100?

Re: Carb rebuild recommendations

I had mine rebuilt by Pistol Pete's and have not had had any issues in almost 30K miles. Based on Randakk's recommendation and the fact that they're only 15 miles from me, I could not pass on them.

Have you seen the photos on the rear wheel removal tutorial? They show a sleeve in the bottom bushing of the right rear shock. That's what I'm wondering about.
