Re: Power outage

I had two bikes do the same thing. One 1500 the other 1800. Both bikes would start and run for a short time then instruments would shut down and soon the engine would shut off. Both bikes had to have alternators replaced.

2002 1800 F1 light came on

A while back I was riding in a major downpour. After about 20 minutes of the flood the F1 light came on. I didn't notice any difference in the bike so when the rain let up I pulled into a parking lot. Killed the bike and got out the phone and checked to see what I needed to do. I started the bike ba...

Re: GL1800 Alternator

Run away!!! I had mine replaced by local bike shop for 375 including parts and labor. I suggest you look around and find a shop to do the change if you don't want to tackle it yourself.

Re: No headlights in cold weather.

Kind of thought it might be the starter button but looking at the schematic it looks like if the starter button is the problem the lights wouldn't work with the reverse button pushed in. That is was is confusing me. As long as it's in reverse I had lights but take it out of reverse and no lights.

No headlights in cold weather.

Rode this weekend up to Tenn. Late Saturday night I stopped to get fuel. When I restarted the bike I had no headlights. I tried turning off the switch a few times then they came back on. I rode another couple of hours and stopped for fuel and when I started I had no headlights. Could not get them to...

Re: GL1800 Reverse issues

My guess would be that the switch has a little corrosion issue. Goldwing switches are commonly plagued with dirt and grim issues. I would suggest that you get some contact cleaner, can be found at Radio Shack, and clean the switch. Hope this helps.

Re: How Many Miles......

We had a benefit ride today for a lady battling cancer (raised over $8000, praise God). The ride was started about 30 miles from the house and was about 100 miles so total ride today was about 160 miles. Stopped by brother-in-law's camp on the way home and he had a port roast on the smoker so we sta...

Grandson's first ride.

Took the grandson (7 years old) on his first ride yesterday. We went to take vegs. to aunt and as we walked out the door he said, "wish we could go on your bike". I looked at him and said, "why not, lets do it". We went to the shop and got him a helmet and I put the headset on hi...

Re: Ignition/fuse/battery

I'm betting alternator. I had the same issue on the 1500 and the 1800. As the battery gets weak because the alternator is not charging the bike will begin to shut down unnecessary things like the radio until there is nothing left to shut down but the engine. That is my experience.

Re: Cruise control

I had the same problem when I got the bike out for the first time after our short winter break. It started working after I worked the brake and clutch a few time pushing them all the way out. I guess one of the switches was sticking a little. No problems since. I would check switches.

Re: Starter problems

Just thinking about my 2002 and what I have had. Did you check the kill switch? On the older bikes the starter would turn over but it would not start. However on the 1800 you just get a click and the lights go out but starter will not engage. Hope it is this simple.

Pirate walks into a bar

A pirate walked into a bar, and the bartender said, "Hey, I haven't seen you in a while. What happened? You look terrible." "What do you mean?" said the pirate, "I feel fine." "What about the wooden leg? You didn't have that before." "Well," said the...

Re: Goldwing Wannabes

All I have to say is look at the group names....Honda Goldwing "RIDERS" ..... Harley Owners.... kind of tells you what most of them think of their bike, you don't find a lot of 20,000 miles a year Harley bikers, I put 20,000+ a year on my Honda. Nuff said.

Re: Intercom system

To rule out the headset/cord use your headset/cord on another bike that you know the intercom is working on and see if it works there. If so you know it's not the headset/cord.

Re: No start, no reverse, BUT, then starts ok but still no r

If the battery is weak it may start the bike but not run the reverse. Had the same problem, bike would start but reverse would not work. Put charger on bike and next day cranked it up and the reverse worked. Killed the bike and tried later that afternoon and bike started but reverse would not work. ...

Re: Pressure washing

IMO - Never pressure wash a bike. There are too many places that you don't want to force water in. I do wash mine but only with soapy water and a hose and then I am very careful about pressure from the hose. I just use a sprayer and put it on a little more than a mist. Bikes are made to be in the ra...

Re: Gas milage

I ride a 02 1800 Motor Trike and get low to mid 30s on an average day. However, hang the camper loaded down and a head wind and it drops to 20s. So, considering you had some wind you aren't too far off.

Re: 1990 overheating

I think you have fan issues. When you are stopped the fans have to kick in to cool the bike. When you ride you don't need the fans (usually at 20 mph or better). Easy to check. When you stop and the temp starts to creep up listen and see if you hear the fans. If not then you have a fan problem. Had ...

Re: INTERMITENT LOSS OF POWER

My 92 1500 began to experience that problem and it turned out to be what Fiberthree said. Clogged fuel filter. It would let enough fuel through to run about 20 miles at highway speed then cut out and slow to around 20 and that was all you could go until you stopped for a few minutes to let the carbs...

Re: Fuse panel

Go to the manuals link at the top of this page. Look for the 1800 service manual. I think it is 2001-2003 and on page 23.3 is the fuse diagram. If you can't find it I can send you the PDF.
