Re: Off-road Rally Goldwings

Love it, That is some "serious riding skill". My hat is off to you and your buddy for showing what a capable bike the GW is. That is awesome. My only question is what type of tire were you running.

Re: rain problems

Just under each spark plug there are drain holes to keep water from pooling around the plugs. My bet is a couple of them are clogged. You can use a small wire or whatever to clear them.

Re: 86 Aspencade gas tank lock.

I have a good working lock w/key you can have. I do not have the spring retention clip to hold it in place. Part #37222-463-000.
Hopefully you have the old one. PM me your info and I'll mail it to you.

Re: Saddle bag Lids

Here's what I did on the cheap. You can pick up separating key rings just about anywhere. Wired them to just reach the ground, but you can easily disconnect them to remove the lid completely. while your at it, tether your side covers too. i just used a thin nylon cord for that.

The key slot is to lock/unlock the radio for removal. Turn the ignition ket to the on position, then you should be able to set the time.

1981, rode the western US with my father and younger brother and a group of friends, all fathers and sons. I rode a 76 GL1000 with HD bags. My father had a really cool Suzuki GS 850 with full Vetter set up and custom paint. Great trip, fond memories.

You could always go a little less radical, tons of options from insane to subtle. Here's my old 1200.

Re: 1986 Honda GL1200 I Rear Tire Change

If they are air assist shocks, remove all the air out. you could try a standard screwdriver and carefully help the shock release itself for their mounts. Approach from the back of the bike and gently move the shock out of position. Prolly just old rubber stuck on the brackets, they can be stubborn. ...

Re: 1986 Honda GL1200 I Rear Tire Change

Don't need to loosen the swing arm, but you need to remove the lower shocks from the swing arm. They have to come out of the mounting points on the swing arm, only then can you raise the rear wheel.

Re: 1986 Honda GL1200 I Rear Tire Change

The axle bolt can be removed by moving the tire Up. You'll need to move the rear shocks from the lower mounting position. I use a 2x4 and different thicknesses of lumber and a mallet to raise the rear tire. Make sure your in neutral. Go slowly and make sure the bike is secure.
Good luck

Re: Should I be upset?

Glad to hear that you had enough space to stop. Poor job to say the least. What kind of paid mechanic would do a brake job and NOT give the bike a test ride before returning it. That's the kind of honest mistake you might make on your own machine, But they must hold themselves to a higher standard w...

Re: switch

Spray some electrical cleaner directly into the "start button". Key off, press the button a number a times while using the cleaner. Give it a few minutes and start it up, this will usually cure the headlight problem. good luck.
