Re: starter switch
where can I get a new switch? I would try the electronic contact cleaner first. CRC makes a good one that you can get at Wal Mart or any auto parts store. Do not use WD 40! it just attracts more crud. Road curd gets in there and makes the switch contacts dirty. The cleaner cleans it off and the swi...

The black ones in the photo look like the ones that were on my 88 when I got it. They go in the same spot as the ones Wing Admin is showing if the mounting bracket is the same. It kind of looks like it from the photo.

If you put them on an 1800, you would loose the cat converters. If you have to get an inspection done for registration, it will fail. Just throwing it out there.

Re: Front wheel bearing
There is no change interval. I check them every time I have the wheel off. I put my finger in the hole that the shaft goes through and slowly turn the bearing. If I feel anything but smooth turning, it get's changed. Some people will change them at 100K. If they do not get contaminated, they will go...

The temp will show high and the fans will run after it has sat for a few minutes. The temp sensor is just hot from sitting. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it does not. As the other post said, more than likely just a loose hose clamp. It could also be a crack in one of the hoses. They are 25 years o...

Re: Rear tire wobble - with video
There is a reason we call the Gold Wing tires from them Stinkos. Very few people have had good luck with them. I could see the wobble before you even put the white marker on it.
I would switch over to a Dunlop or a Metzler. I had great luck and mileage out of both of them when I had my 88.

Re: Leaving bike outside long term
Definitely get some type of full cover. The weather will age your bike quicker than you think. The sun also ages the tires quicker. The seat is vinal unless the previous owner had it recovered with leather. Can you put one of those plastic sheds on your property that the bike would fit inside? That ...

Re: Touring boots
I just use a good over the ankle waterproof hiking boot. I tried a pair of motorcycle boots and they were like walking in moon boots. Shifting was not easy either. They were also much hotter in the summer. The hiking boots are more comfortable. If I go through a park and see a trail I want to explor...

Re: GL1500 gas smell
Sounds like it is time to remove the body work and check for a fuel hose leak. There is a T fitting from the main fuel line to split it to each carb. Check that it is not cracked. The float bowl seal could also be leaking. Do you see any fuel on the floor when parked overnight? If so, then your floa...

Re: Tuning Carburators for altitude
No, you do not need to adjust the 1500 carbs. The bike has a system that adjusts for altitude. The video describes how it works. I live at 5800 feet and ride at 10,000 to 11.000 feet when I go up in the mountains. Bike always ran great. The same when I had it in California on the coast.

Re: Large wire connector under seat
Honda use Hitachi connectors. Here are a few sites that have them. You can also search for other sites. There is a small tab on the connector that holds it in the plastic plug. You push that tab down and the connector will slide out of the plug. You don't have to get the crimper, but it makes the jo...

Re: Flasher switch not staying engaged
I second the above. Clean out the old grease and clean the contacts. You will put Dialectric grease back in. You can get it in a small squeeze tube at your local auto parts store. At some point you will want to do this to all the push switches on the handle bars. The old grease gets full of road gri...

Not a fan of the Battery Tender JR. I had one go bad and cook the battery. I only use the Battery Tender Plus, the bigger one. I have one that is 20 years old and still works great. It is hooked up to my RV battery right now. I also have them on my wing and quads. Agree that your battery is bad. If ...

Re: GL1800 left hand control electrical issues
Nope. As I said, I already tried cleaning the contacts. So now that the easy suggestion has been tried - twice - any suggestions on how to test to determine if the left handlebar control unit is the problem, or if it's deeper in the wiring harness? You are going to have to take the housing apart. T...

Re: GL1800 left hand control electrical issues
Get some CRC Electronic Contact Cleaner . You can find it at Wal Mart or an Auto Parts Store. Use the plastic tube and spray it in and work the switch up and down a bunch. Repeat this a few times. Same for the horn button. You might have to take the housing apart to get to the contacts on the horn b...

Yes, when you remove the air filter housing, you then have access to the choke cable where it attaches to the carbs.

Storage space is my big problem with that... I've thought about that, believe me!! Bob For the rear diff fluid, use a section of clear vinal hose about two feet long. Put one end on the bottle tip and the other end in the fill opening and fill. Easy and no mess. I just put my Harbor Freight lift on...

Re: Tire inflators/compressors and max Amp draw
Except Honda designed it to inflate your tires. Read the owners manual. Why Honda included the hose is not for me to ascertain. But I do know that the suspension needs the air compressor to adjust the suspension. Other than that, I'd steer away from trying to use the compressor for anything else. W...

Where did you get the replacement plugs from? Way too many fake China NGK labeled plugs on Amazon and E Bay that cause problems.

Re: New Alternator needed (89 GL1500) - OEM or Compufire?
I hear ya on having the alternator tested and cleaned as well - seen that advice a lot - it's done 94,000 at this point. Unless the copper wire winding is damaged, it can be repaired. Honda sells just the contacts. They are not that hard to replace. Or get the new contacts and take it to the altern...

Re: New Alternator needed (89 GL1500) - OEM or Compufire?
If you have an alternator shop around, take your original there and have it checked. The one on my 88 was doing the same thing as yours. The shop found that there was just dust from the contacts keeping them from moving and doing their job. They cleaned it up and checked it out. It was putting out 1...

Re: Service manual GL 1500 - 1988/89
When I had my 88, I had both the factory and the Clymer manual. The Clymer had some things in it that the factory manual did not for some reason. I got both of them off E Bay. I like the Clymer manual better than the Haynes. It just covered more things.

My 88 was doing the same thing as the original poster said. I found that the rubber cover over the engine was falling apart and the heat was vapor locking the carb. I replaced the cover and that helped big time. I was riding in 110 degree temps at the time. If it was 85 or below, I did not have any...
