Re: What now....?

Good morning, did you replace the slow idle jets? If you have 1980 carbs they are pressed in and dont usually come with a carb kit. I pulled them on my bike and they were all plugged. After cleaning them my bike runs great. Just thought I would throw that out there.

That was too close!

Thank you to all the members that keep reminding us to change timing belts. I wasnt going to change mine but I listened to you folks and glad I did. After changing the belts I checked the old ones and found a split in one of the belts. A 30 dollar investment saved me from ruining my wing. I am very ...

Re: New Ride....(pics)

Have you changed the fuel filter and checked the tank for rust? I would pull the carbs and clean them up really well or at least pull the bowls and check to see how dirty they are. Just a suggestion.

Re: New Ride....(pics)

Glad to hear you are getting rid of those ugly handle bars. It should be a crime to do that to any motorcycle. Just my opinion of course. :-)

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

Now another issue. I cant get the 1100 to idle down. Idle set screw is all the way out. Not sure if it is binding somewhere or what exactly is causing the problem. I will do more investigating. Any suggestions are welcome!

Re: Favorite Chrome Polish??

Simi chrome. Comes in a yellow tube with red lettering. I used it on a bike that sat outside for years and it made an amazing shine! Doesn't take much either. Great stuff! Also works on other metals. Auto parts stores usually carry it

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

I did just pull the slow idle jets and cleaned them. Is it possible I didn't tap them back in far enough or too far? I have the mixture screws turned out about 2 times.

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

Floats are in right, I pulled the line off the carb coming from the fuel pump and it pumped gas like crazy. I pulled the spark plugs and it looks like the no. 1 cylinder is not firing. Fuel in all the bowls. #4 less then the others. It will start if I dump fuel in the plenum but wont stay running. I...

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

I cant get it to run for more then a few seconds on raw gas. Screws are set at 1 an 1/2 turns out. Fuel bowls have some gas. Number 2 have more in it then the rest. I have the choke open all the way and it makes no difference. Should I open the screws more? It started with the touch of the starter b...

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

Ok well that was a bummer. Got the carbs back on and tried to start it. No joy. If I dump gas in the plenum it will run for a little while but once the gas is gone it kills. I checked the fuel pump. It is pumping gas into the carb and that is as far as it goes. I bench tested it and no leaks. No fue...

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

Bjorn1, thank you for sharing the link. I ended up turning a drywall screw into them then prying them out. They were a bugger to get out but I got them. I'm going to finish going through the carbs today and hope to get them back on. I took some time to get the 4 caps and the down tubes to shine a li...

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

Btw tigercub, I used the drywall screw method with a pry bar and a block of wood. I messed up the ends some. Hoping they will still work. They pressed in fine and all of the openings are clear. I did find a source for new jets if I need them.

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

After getting the jets out o figured I might as well give the carbs the once over. I thought I had the carbs really clean after I boiled them out. I was so wrong. I discovered several holes that were plugged including all of the idle jets and the holes for the mixture screws. I was astounded the 110...

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

I got those jets out! Everyone was plugged solid. It's a wonder how it ran as good as it did! I am hoping with that done it will run better. It certainly should. Thank you for your help! Glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and did this!

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

It is settled. Going to pull the carbs, again, and try to pull the slow speed or idle jets and clean them out. My 1100 runs great above 2500 rpm but under that it hesitates, and wont idle decent. Hoping this will solve the problem. I will probably set the floats too since I did not do that before. W...

Re: Cant get my gl1100 to stay at idle

Thank you for the replies! My question is if you pull out the idle jets with a drywall screw, dont you have to replace the jets? I will be pulling my carbs again to check the idle jets and pull them. Wish me luck!
