1980 interstate neutral safety switch

Good afternoon all! I have a question about my neutral safety switch. The neutral light stays on all the time and I can start the bike without pulling in the clutch. I figure the switch is bad but could it possibly be a diode I just read about. I dont know if that diode is on my model or not. It als...

Re: New look for an old wing

Both of these bike were purchased as non running projects. Lots of swearing and work and they both run great now. I am very proud of what I accomplished with help from this forum and good friends. Thank you very much! Time to ride!

New look for an old wing

Good morning all! I recently got my 1980 goldwing out of storage to get it ready for spring. I rebuilt the carbs with a master kit from Randakks, rebuilt the front master cylinder (even the reservoir was leaking), derusted the gas tank (big job? Uffda!) Then removed the ugly vetter fairing and retro...

Re: Running boards

I believe the rubber pad is to bolt on to your rear brake arm when the floor boards are installed as the rear brake is difficult to use. I think the two chrome peices go through the d ring on your helmet then you lock the chrome part to the helmet lock on your bike. My 2 cents worth anyway. Have a g...

Re: Pulled the starter now a large puddle of oil

I appreciate that. I found the carb problem yesterday. When I rebuilt the carbs I missed putting in an o ring on the no. 3 carb. Took me a while but I am happy I found it. No more leaks.

Have a great week!

Re: Pulled the starter now a large puddle of oil

So it turns out old guy glen got it right. My oil was over full caused by the carb dumping raw gas into the intake. Thank you sir! That helped me sort out two problems. Now I am trying to find the leak source in the carbs. I think I missed an o ring or something on the number 3 carb. Everything else...

Re: Pulled the starter now a large puddle of oil

It is on the center stand and sits straight. It might have been over full as I can barely read the oil level sight glass. It appears it was just the plate size puddle of oil and it looks like it has not leaked any more. If it was over full would that be how oil got inside the starter?

Pulled the starter now a large puddle of oil

I pulled the starter on my 1980 gl1100 and now there is a puddle of oil about the size of a dinner plate under the bike. Is this normal when pulling the starter?

Oil inside starter

Good morning :) ! Just want to start off by saying thank you. This is an awesome site. I pulled the starter off my 1100 to take it apart and do some repair. When I opened the starter there was about a tablespoon of oil inside. Not even sure how it got in there. The insides look terrible and black. A...

No power to turn signals

Good morning all. I recently took the vetter fairing off my goldwing and am switching to the standard look. My issue is I cant get my front turn signals to work. I dont have power at the fuse for the turn signals either. I have the bike rear end apart and the rear turn signals are disconnected . Do ...

Re: Carb Needles & Seats

Last year I used the drywall screw method and pulled the jets you are talking about. I wont do it again as it damaged the jets. I think you are right to leave them in. Randakk recommends it as well. I did press the keys back in and the seem to be fine but I wont pull them again. I wasnt able to find...

Re: Tearing down my gl1100. Again

I managed to get the carbs finished. I was amazed at how dirty they were. The floats were so far off I dont know how it ran at all. The cheap gaskets I used last year pretty much all failed and explains why I had so many leaks. Now this time i separated all the carbs and made sure everything was cle...

Tearing down my gl1100. Again

20200224_104552.jpg Decided to tear into my 1980 gl1100 once again. I did a limited cleaning on the carbs and by the end of the season it was leaking gas everywhere but it was running fairly well. Then I discovered the tank had lots of rust. Now iam going to do it all over again with no shortcuts. ...

Re: What now....?

Good morning, did you replace the slow idle jets? If you have 1980 carbs they are pressed in and dont usually come with a carb kit. I pulled them on my bike and they were all plugged. After cleaning them my bike runs great. Just thought I would throw that out there.

That was too close!

Thank you to all the members that keep reminding us to change timing belts. I wasnt going to change mine but I listened to you folks and glad I did. After changing the belts I checked the old ones and found a split in one of the belts. A 30 dollar investment saved me from ruining my wing. I am very ...

Re: New Ride....(pics)

Have you changed the fuel filter and checked the tank for rust? I would pull the carbs and clean them up really well or at least pull the bowls and check to see how dirty they are. Just a suggestion.

Glad to hear you are getting rid of those ugly handle bars. It should be a crime to do that to any motorcycle. Just my opinion of course. :-)

Found the problem. The adjustment for the number 4 carb came loose. I got it put right now it runs fine. Guess I panicked for nothing!! :-)
