Re: BattleAx: "New" BT-46 vs "old" BT-45
I had BT45's on my 76 GL1000 and hated the feel of the front. It seemed to want to 'fall' into corners much more than I was comfortable with. It started cupping after a long tour (6800 miles in 6 weeks!) at about 8k miles so I swapped both out for Shinko Tourmaster 230. They made a huge difference t...

Re: Adjusting The Clutch On A '76 LTD
First, did the handlebar clutch lever operate the clutch before you changed the cable? Or more to the point, why did you change the cable? If not, the cable is not the problem. Disconnect it from the operating lever and try to move the lever, in either direction. If you can backwards a fraction that...

Re: Site progress update
Hi Scott, First, thank you for all your hard work. I feel your pain though, for the following reasons. My Wingovations.com site was started back in 2009, hosted by Moonfruit on a then relativly innovative Flash based drag-and-drop. I had absolutely zero knowledge of how to do this, but through sheer...

Re: Gl1000 drive shaft
The biggest difference is the in the Universal Joint. Because the 1100 frame is longer at that point, the engine side of the joint is longer to accomodate that difference.

Re: 1100 starter into 1200?
As far as I'm aware, the '84 starter is a one year only part. I know the later 1200 starters don't fit neither do the 1100 or 1000 units. Best route is to take it to somewhere that does rebuild/rewinds, although these are getting scarce these days.

Re: Oil and water pump
If you have the time, you might as well take yours apart and find out what is wrong with it. You've got nothing to lose. If the condition is ok and you can repair the problem, that would be great. If not, you can still look for another engine. Well, that's a point if you have the mechanical knowled...

Okay thank y'all sooo much lots of help are theses engines hard to rebuild Pretty straight forward to rebuild, but hard to get parts. Typically it is easier at this time to get a good used engine. Re: Oil and water pump
If the water pump drive shaft won't turn, you have NO alternative but to pull the engine out and strip the rear cover off. It sounds just like I have described above; either the scavenge pump is locked up or the drive chain has snapped, or both. No further diagnosis is possible with the engine in th...

Re: Oil and water pump
The water pump shaft is driven through the scavenge pump. The drive part in that pump can split and wreck the scavenge pump. First move is to remove the front transmission cover and water pump, then see if the shaft will turn. If not, the water pump is the problem; if it does either scavenge pump p...

Re: Retorquing a head Torque specs?
At a guess, you have two chances of a retorque fixing the problem; none and bugger all.
Going to have to pull the head and change the gasket.
When replacing the head, Moly grease the main bolt theads and under the heads, incrementally tighten to 45ft/lbs.

Re: How to install oil orifice?
Well now, here's a puzzle! I know for sure that the ones in my 76 engine are the same as your original, without the side holes. But the two spares that I have, which came out of GL1000 engines, have the holes. Furthermore, the Honda Fiscs show the holey ones right through all the four cylinders, as ...

Re: How to install oil orifice?
I'm guessing that, because the 1200 has hydraulic tappets, it needs a higher oil flow to the heads. The 1200 pump is also driven faster and so also has higher flow. So where does that lead? Hmm....you would have higher flow to the head but probably lose a bit of pressure elsewhere. At higher revs th...

Re: Engine serial number vs Carburetor ID code
Ok, so yes they are the wrong carbs for the year. Yes, they are not optimal for the cams and ignition timing of the 76 (but, unless you remove the cams and check the part numbers you equally don't know if the PO changed them too!) Look, surely the answer to the whole thing is; In your own words, 'it...

Re: '78 Head Casting Number Question
Cams from 75-77 have no marking other than L or R ( why they have that I don't know, as it's quite obvious which is which). Cams from 78-79 have 431 stamped on them and are different timing from the early version.

Re: will any auto starters work on gl1100
Although the GL1000 engine looks the same , the starter won't fit the 1100. But the 1100 starter will fit the 1000.
All the 1100 models use the same starter.

The old, old, saying for these bikes: If you don't know FOR SURE the history, get them changed! 5 years or 25000 miles, whichever is sooner, get them changed! Been sitting for a long time without being turned over? Get them changed! You really do not want either of the two belts to break. In fact, m...

I first heard about this some 10 years ago, but had forgotten it. The Honda part number is 13211-PA5-003 but long unavailable from Honda.
