Re: Oil Pickup Screen

O.M.G. You have just confirmed my worst fears. How could Honda ever have .... naah ... never mind ...   They deleted the cover all together on 1200s, you have to split the engine cases to get to it so don't complain. Well I don't have a 1200, and anyway, it's my bike so ...

Re: Oil Pickup Screen

Greeting from Nova Scotia and another cold garage! I just removed and cleaned my oil pick-up screen ... 3 of the four bolts that hold the cover on will come free and clear of the engine, however the bolt that is closest to the front of the bike cannot be removed because it interferes with the frame...

GL1100 Oil pickup strainer cover.

Hi Guys. :-) I suspect the strainer is blocked to some degree, as recently, the oil pressure light is taking longer and longer to turn off after starting. Has anyone found a way of removing the bolts securing this cover, especially the one facing the engine mount tab? I've scoured GW Docs and found ...

Re: Filter change with every oil change?

That is proven in the truck and railroad industries over and over.... they change out the filters and run the oil with 'make up oil' to keep the level correct. Oil Analysis once in a while to be sure all is well. as I mentioned a long bit ago, I goofed last year because my wife was in the hospital ...

Re: Filter change with every oil change?

Surprised no one mentioned the reasons manufacture's once recommend filters be changed every other oil change and why that has changed. First off, you should never fill a new oil filter with oil because of the possibility of introducing dirt into the clean side of the filter. Doing so will send the...

Re: 5W-20 oil

I am using Rotella 5w40 T6 synthetic without any problems. So why aren't you using an xW-20 oil now? |:- " without any problems." So please tell me: how do you know there are no problems? OK - so your engine has not seized - but beyond that, do you have Used Oil Analysis (UOA) results to show parts...

Filter change with every oil change?

I thought so, until I discovered that the Minneapolis police department had trialed an every-second-filter change approach. Basically, maintenance costs of vehicle fleets is huge. In a nutshell, they decided on this because of the idea that as a filter traps more particles, it becomes a better filte...

Re: 5W-20 oil

5W-20 ..... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. N.E.V.E.R NEVER NEVER NEVER go below xW-40. Why??? Our engines are "flat tappet" design. Means the tappets and cam have a sliding contact. To avoid wear, the oil has a high zinc content. 1000ppm+ BUT - zinc poisons cat converters. So en...

Re: OK - re my GL1100 - but greater knowledge needed.

PROBLEM SOLVED. :D :D :D Looks like it was the earthing of the CDI units. snip However, something in the back of my mind is not 100% convinced, yet I can't think of anything else I've done (or disturbed). Time will tell. Well that fix didn't last. I'm sure there was also discussion about the incorr...

Agree completely. Intermittents are the pits. Grrrrr. (Once worked in telecommunications). I've completely dismantled / removed from bike - all ignition components - down to the plug cap resistors. Fitted new coils. That's why I looked at the CDI units - nothing else left to fiddle with. LOL If/whe...

The higher the RPM, the more power required for a good spark.
Yes and I have seen on an 1100 a dead leg on the stator causing it to not charge enough and have a high RPM fall out.
Thanks Dave. Battery voltage rises to 13.4V off idle and holds at higher revs.

Re: Misfire above 4k rpm fixed. Was: GL1100 - greater knowledge ...

The higher the RPM, the more power required for a good spark. If you have any resistance anywhere, you can see this problem. Or spark leakage. It's possible that you had a weak connection somewhere, and by moving things around having them apart, you made that connection solid again. You might have ...

Nope, they will work laying loose, not grounded at all. Someone did come up with an idea to use a piece of a computer power supply heat sink bolted between them. Not sure if it help but doesn't hurt. Auuuggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Just hate that. Problem clears itself and I don't know why. Grrrr...

Misfire above 4k rpm fixed. Was: GL1100 - greater knowledge ...

Have just seen this old post: "High rpm miss during acceleration" http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16191 by marcsac. That thread ended in 2016 with still no apparent fix after mind numbing amounts of work and expense. Problem sounded almost identical to mine, so decided link the two...

Re: OK - re my GL1100 - but greater knowledge needed.

PROBLEM SOLVED. :D :D :D Looks like it was the earthing of the CDI units. Had reached the point where I was completely out of ideas, and just to feel like I was doing something I unscrewed the CDI units in case any corrosion between the heat-sink bodies and frame could be causing problems. Nothing u...

Re: OK - re my GL1100 - but greater knowledge needed.

Hmmmm - only marginal improvement. Both original coils failed? Not beyond bounds of possibility but thought it unlikely. Screwdriver between plug caps and heads. All good. Revved it in a dark garage: no sparklies. All new plugs btw. Hmmmm. Time for second new coil. Mumble grumble ....

Thanks DenverWinger. Sounds just like what mine is doing.

Had it in the RHS last night but problem persisted.

Re: OK - re my GL1100 - but greater knowledge needed.

Hi Guys. :-) I think it's a coil breaking down. New coil arrived today. Will fit tomorrow. The sudden way in which the problem came on, for me, was the clue. OK - re my GL1100 - but greater knowledge needed.

Decided to run my 1100 hard thru the gears to the red-line. 1st - 8k rpm. OK 2nd - 8k rpm - almost - but OK 3rd - nothing over 4-5k. Like it had lost a plug. Felt like something had just broken in that instant. Grrr. After that - could not rev beyond 4k under any sort of load. Starts and idles like ...

Re: Rear Shocks and front forks

Try merging onto I-90 from northbound 53 at 90 mph. The hinge is real, Cosmo Hey Cosmo - but first, have you attended to all those running gear issues I mentioned? Fork and shock damping is particularly important. Among other things, it will damp the front/rear rocking horse motion that leads to sp...
