Re: deer alerts

Oh!!! I can't watch those vids...too much like my own encounter. But it is clear they come from nowhere and there really isn't any avoiding them. I figured on my incident with the GW, there was 20 feet of warning at 45mph and that equals 1/3 second. Still, I hit the binders pretty hard and knew to k...

Re: deer alerts

Like many writing to this thread I have researched deer strike elimination devices and techniques. There is simply no device proven effective and the data from hundreds of DOTs to universities conclude that. I have been riding bikes since 1960 and never hit a deer while driving any vehicle. In Septe...

Re: How do you brake your Wing?

Ditto all the above using both brakes. I pretty much ride only mountain roads as that is where I live. I was surprised to learn some fast riders I rode with, not on GWs, used only their front brakes. And some HD riders I ride with fairly often only use their rear brakes on these twisty roads...and I...

Buffdaddy, PM Answered. If interested, I'll split the shipping costs if you get before the end of this month. And I might have a few other parts laying around...I'll have to look. Scot

1985 GW Seat

I sold my 1985 Aspencade and have the seat left over. It is brown and is in very nice shape. Included is the seat itself (one piece driver/passenger) and the passenger back rest). The passenger arm rests are gone and the driver back rest is gone. Seat is original, I did have an upholstery shop add s...

Low Mileage Aspencade For Sale

Well....I guess I am going to part with my pristine 1985 Gold Wing Aspencade. I bought a GL1800 and I can't justify keeping both. This bike runs fantastic and is very dependable. Current mileage is 31, 800 but I still ride it. It has new (6/14) Dunlop Elite 3 tires, battery is an AGM new in June, a ...

Re: How to Predict Catastrophic GL1200 Stator Failure

Oops! I meant to say a 50 amp R/R will do fine. I did not mean to say a 50 amp fuse is fine. Use a 30 amp fuse like Honda designed. Scot

Re: How to Predict Catastrophic GL1200 Stator Failure

Shindengen. the GL1200 puts out 360 watts of power from the alternator. Divided by 12 and that yields 30 amps. The LTd and SEI put out more; I can't remember how much. If you find a 30 amp MOSFET it will do fine. the main fuse is 30 amps, right? So, that's the factory limit for the wiring harness. A...

Re: How to Predict Catastrophic GL1200 Stator Failure

A series regulator will do no good with a permanent magnet alternator. However, you can improve the situation with the R/R on these old wings by using a MOSFET R/R. I the factory SCR, the heat one feels is mostly from the swiching going on internally (in the silicon) that shunts the unused power to ...

Re: How to Predict Catastrophic GL1200 Stator Failure

That is a great analysis of the GL1200 alternator problems. But I do not believe it is the coil windings that simply break. Rather it is the conformal coating that breaks down on the coil winding and that allows the shorting to commence. When enough current can flow to ground through the coating bre...

Re: First ride on my GL 1200 - first impressions

Yes, I ride with a Harley group Also. So, the GW is something they don't "get." Still, on the latest ride, I was riding inside their corner tracks and when I took the lead, they fell back. Interesting as the guys are all experienced riders and I didn't push the zgW in the least. When we got back the...

Re: First ride on my GL 1200 - first impressions

That's an interesting subject, Ratwing. I too have had a few bikes, most recently a Roadstar 1700. I bought an 1985 Aspencade with 27,000 miles and have now sold my roadie. Boy, they are different bikes. First impression is the GL1200 is twitchy compared to the roadie...I kept having to correct my i...
