Re: GL1100 Carb Removal/Rebuild

9950 miles for $1400? You'd better be looking over your shoulder before the police find you for stealing that bike! :) I haven't done an overhaul on my carbs (haven't needed to, thankfully) so I haven't got any details on doing it. However, if/when I do, I will be purchasing this rebuild kit and gu...

Re: Where are your rpm's when you are shifting up?

Preload the shifter with a tiny bit of pressure for smoother shifts.

Re: Just picked up a bike, already having problems

Always a good idea to check the reserve setting. I can't remember which forum I was on but somebody said that the first time they had to hit reserve on their oldwing they were stranded, as the reserve pickup was blocked. If you sucked some crud from the bottom of the tank I would think that your fue...

When I was rebuilding my carbs I lost one of the screws from an intake clamp.....found it inside #4 cylinder when I pulled the head to fix the bent valve.

Re: The Best (and cheapest) Riding Sunglasses

I’ve been wearing safety glasses as sunglasses for a number of years and agree with wingadmin that they are great all around sunglasses for motorcycling.I have been spending about $7.50 a pair because I get mine with readers in them( apparently I’m getting old).I buy them at a safety equipment supp...

Re: Oil leak and burning oil

Smokes from the right side of the ENGINE?...or out the exhaust? Looks to me that it's leaking on both sides. I'm going to take a SWAG (scientific wild-assed guess) that the valve cover gaskets are leaking and when you use the sidestand oil is getting onto the right header. Start by giving the engine...

There's a good chance that you pinched the o-ring...I don't think the type of coolant would have an effect after such a short time.

Re: charging

Pull the battery cover and check the plug on the three yellow wires coming from the stator. These plugs are known to overheat and melt...wich can cause stator failure. The best thing to do is to cut out the plug and solder the wires directly to each other. If yours is bad the stator might indeed be ...

Re: How much should I do?

While you have the battery cover off disconnect the plug from the charging system (three yellow wires). If there's ANY evidence of discoloring, melting or corrosion, eliminate the plugs and solder the wires.

Re: Help broken valve cover bolt gl1100

If the PO didn't put any kind of threadlocker or anything on that bolt it may back out fairly easily if you can get a grip on it somehow....the bolts bottom out on that shoulder so the remainder might not be too tight. A left handed drill bit might spin it right out.

Metzeler lasertec come in those sizes. Some folks had problems with Metzeler MC tires....not sure which model. Maybe someone will post the info. I'm really happy with my Michelin Commander2 tires on my 83...they don't have sizes for the early 1100s

Re: Occasional Fuel Leak from Vent Hose at #3 Carb

I was thinking the same thing....no overflow tubes/hoses. A leak at carb #3 could be from the accelerator pump. If the diaphragm fails gas will travel up the shaft and leak from the carb body....I had this happen. The symptoms were different though....I kept smelling gas when I was riding but couldn...

The progressive springs are a single spring for each side....the factory springs are two springs per side....pull them both. When I did my 83 I found that the oil was nothing more than a grey sludge...probably still the original oil. I used diesel fuel to clean them out before i put in the new ATF. ...

Yes...they're a lot better. $_57.JPG This is what I mean by a tower type... they also make them with a single LED....a narrow beam would be more like a flashlight as opposed to a spotlight... I'm pretty sure your 82 takes the other kind of base...the push & turn "Bayonet" base. 83 takes the wedge ba...

Re: LED Gauge Cluster

I changed the bulbs in my 83 to LED bulbs. I got a "tower" type bulb from Ebay. I ended up changing the idiot lights back to regular bulbs....with the LEDs you could see the chips on the top of the bulbs. I didn't like the look. I found conventional bulbs at the local parts store that were a bit hig...

Re: Clutch cable broke, lever won't move

I always carry a spare cable on my '78 GL. It came in handy, many years ago on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but was definitely a challenge for me to change it at the time. Now I still carry a spare cable in case the shop doesn't have one in stock, but I also have CAA/AAA roadside service to get me home ...
