Re: Darkside swap-size

FYI...I got over 16,000 miles from a Michelin Commander 2 rear on my 83. I replaced it with the same. Likewise I got over 16,000 from a Commander 2 on the front but the closest size to stock was 130/70 x 18. It fit just fine but threw the speedo way off. I replaced it with a Bridgestone BT-45 REAR t...

Re: Darkside swap-size

I did see one somewhere on the web.....it had a very square profile...5.00 or 5.10 x 16. He was using it on a sidecar tug so handling shouldnt be an issue. I wouldn't run that tire on a solo bike. You can fit a 1200 swingarm and final drive and run a 15" car tire on an 1100. I think the rim needs to...

Re: Un-Linking '83 GL1100I Brakes?

When I first got my 83 I thought that I'd be unlinking the brakes. 7 years later and I've had no problems at all with them....dirt roads, wet leaves/grass. I'm glad I didn't mess with them.

Re: Aspencade Neutral problems

I read somewhere that some aftermarket front cover gaskets are thinner than the OEM gaskets and cause the neutral switch to bind a bit against the front cover.

Re: Gearing

They changed the 82 high gear from the 80 & 81. In 83 they changed the secondary reduction ratio and also gave it a shorter first gear. The actual transmission ratio of high gear is the same on the 82 and 83

Re: Gearing

Something doesn't sound right....82 & 83 are pretty close in their gearing. My 83 is turning 4000 at 75 mph. I wonder if at some time an 80 or 81 engine was swapped into your bike.

If it's not the 7v regulator the faulty connection is likely under the seat right on the sending unit. I've had mine act up after swapping out seats.....give it a good cleaning

Re: Tires

Options are very limited for the 1100...not enough width in the swingarm. Double Dark is when they run a car tire in the rear and a rear motorcycle tire up front. I've done this on my 83 1100. I have a Bridgestone Battleax BT-45 120/90 rear tire on the front. After 8000+ miles it still looks new.

Re: New GL1100 owner seeking info on relay mod

I've heard of it but not done it myself. The coil gets power from a small wire coming from the handlebar kill switch. Supposedly if you wire a relay between the battery and the coil pack and use that small wire to energize the relay you would get more power to the coils.

I have one that is black, in good shape. $15 plus shipping sound good?
The price is right....does it have a chrome rack on it?....I'm hoping to find one with a match to my good one.

Re: Trunk release lock substitute

I remember using a hose clamp around the post when one of mine was lost....no longer easily removeable but at least it was secure. I searched eBay for quite awhile and finally found a pair at a good price. I installed both of them and the lone key stays on the garage wall. I'll see if i can find the...

By any chance are the 5mm fittings for synchronizing the carbs still on the manifolds and are all the rubber caps still in place?

Re: Removing Mirror Glass

I had no trouble doing mine. Don't try to just remove the glass...remove the glass AND rubber at the same time. I warmed up the rubber a bit with a heat gun and used one of those orange handled picks from Harbor Freight. I did the one with the cracked glass first and was surprised that i got the cra...

Re: Gas squirting from carb on acceleration

You don't have to tear into the carbs to fix the pump. Here's a few suggestions. I'd pull the float bowls off and make sure the insides are nice and clean.,,worst that can happen is that you would need new gaskets for them. When you get the carbs back together get a long piece of fuel hose and hook ...

I've been doing mine with a single vacuum gauge I got at Auto Zone...I know it's not the best way but it works. You need the 5mm nipples and I needed to get a check valve at the aquarium store.
