Re: 1978 vrs 1979 Gauges

If your fuel Gauge reads empty with a half tank left, it is working like most other users on GL1000's. Regulator will not fix that. Some have fiddled with the float arm but best to just go by miles. Not sure on the 7 vs 8.4 but might have to do with the amperage. The regulation voltage did not chan...

Re: 1978 vrs 1979 Gauges

What's the issue with the fuel gauge? I go by mileage only. I also go by mileage but would like my gauge to be as accurate as possible. Right now when it's full it reads correctly... but when it's reads empty I've got about half a tank. I've already pulled out and check my float and it's working fi...

Re: 1978 vrs 1979 Gauges

I'm wondering if the center gauges (above the false tank) are the same from a 1978 GL1000 -> 1979 GL1000? and the 7 volt regulator ? I am having problems with my fuel gauge reading incorrectly and wondering if the 7volt regulator needs to be changed. I found someone selling a 1979 gauge pod for $25...

Re: 1976 GL100 Second time around.

Got the tank done, cleaned it up inside and out. Used POR-15, motorcycle tank recondition kit for the first time and it worked nicely. Clean the rust off the outside, gave it a coat of primer and 3 coats of gloss black engine color. Has to set till Friday before any fuel can be added. POR is great ...

Re: 1976 GL100 Second time around.

Thx for the replies :D . I got the mufflers weld up and patched a few small spots on the headers, they should last a little while, but going to need replaced down the road. I used electrolysis to clean the tank, which done a nice job but needs to be coated, going to do a POR-15 job on it, which is ...

Re: Wiring harness fried

I'm really thinking about doing that. At a minimum I'm going to pull the old wrapping off so I can make sure everything is in good shape. Are all those same wire colors easy to find? I've determined my rectifier is shot, and I was reading about replacing it with a regulator/rectifier and eliminatin...

Re: Wiring harness fried

Thanks for the advice. I ordered a 40 year old harness because I couldn't find a new one. Are you aware of a source for a new one? No, that's why I ask. I do know of people who have made their own. I'd be sorely tempted to take that 40 year harness apart, blueprint it, then build a jig from it so t...

Re: Wiring harness fried

I've ordered a harness from ebay, it should get here next week. I'm a novice when it comes to electric but I think I can handle it. I've been reading and re-reading WingAdmin's Electric 101 posts as well (thanks for that). Is there anything I should be doing now, before the new harness gets here? A...

Re: Wiring harness fried

Hi, I was out riding today when all of a sudden the bike shut down and started smoking. I've ridden about 500 miles so far this year with no issues. Looks like I really fried the wiring harness, I was able to trailer it home and take pictures. I don't know why this happened or how, but here are som...

Does that actually open the bags?
Amazing how help seems to be a one way street for some.

We ask for some help with an answer and it falls on dead ears.
The original poster hasn't been on the site in six months, which is likely why he hasn't answered your question.

Re: Goldwing Tank

Broke through my fuel pipes completely after another few hours of drilling. The short story is that the carbs now flood because after removing the carbs and bowls they have the same brown paste through them. I have a small sonic cleaner I can put them in one at a time. Any comments on the best carb...

Good morning. I'm with you. I saw that ad, but opted not to contact them out of respect for their auction. I contacted the company which is still in business, but the people I talked to there have never heard of it, and was told that their archives only go back to the late 90s. It's a rare bird, in...

Re: What to look for when buying

Typo issue for sure. I meant saving the original paint. Once you repaint, the original paint is gone never to return. Many make the repaint mistake and then search for OEM painted panels to get her back to a vintage look. Aged paint can look great in a show. I have the original panels packed away a...

Re: Hondaline luggage keys

I've seen a lot of threads on this issue and most have no answer. A couple has said they got keys made but they never said what blank was used. The strange thing was that there was no follow-up by asking what blank was used. I got two sets so it's not an issue for me. For the life of me, I cannot im...

Re: What to look for when buying

One parting thought. Check the drive shaft. At least pull back the rubber cover and take a look at the splines and u joint and make sure it is not broken. One I picked up had a broken drive shaft which you have to hunt down on the used market. I would bet the gas tank has rusted up inside. I had to...

1978 GL1000 Bike got REALLY wet, blinkers went solid and eventually stopped working altogether during a ride. Now neither the blinkers or the brake light work. So no blinkers when using the indicator switch and no brake light when using the front or rear brake. -Taillight works. -Fuse is good. -All...

Thanks NevsMate! :) I'll try that next. Before I could try the valve grind routine, a machinist buddy in eastern US told me all of his extensive tests, like preloading the spring with washers and doing the valve grind compound thing. He saved me a lot of fooling around, though it was disappointing ...

Let us s know if it fits. On an early wing it often rubs the forks with some brands of 110 19 inch tires.
Were the tubes bigger on the early Gls ?
