Re: 76 GL1000 Issues, Questions, Upgrades

Got to fix that rust issue. If you don't it can cause major issues. Start by changing the fuel filter and check it often. I have a cleanable filter. The tank issue is a major one to do it properly. You have to basically remove the whole back part of the bike to get the tank out. You could try it wit...

Re: Fork Fix or Conversion?

Oh wonderful, I should just need to swap the caps and seals, then fill with oil as normal? Do you happen to have a par5 number for the caps? Or should just replacing the seals be good enough? You can't buy the caps as they are no longer available from Honda. Not sure what seals you are talking abou...

Re: Fork Fix or Conversion?

Howdy guys, So I bought a barnfind 77 Goldwing. I was able to get the motor running but the carbs have vacuum leaks galore, so I'll be rebuilding them soon, and replacing the clutch b/c no matter what I do it won't completely disengage. Anyhow, we're talking about the forks. The forks currently hav...

Re: '78 GL1000 No lights or start

A couple of questions (shows how far in the weeds I am): The battery connection on the starter should read zero ohms to the case? When pressing the start button, I should hear the solenoid click? I love this bike, but I guess it's like any other relationship. Some days it sucks. Both stupid questio...

Re: '78 GL1000 No lights or start

Battery has a full charge, but the lights never come on, under any condition. All the fuses check good with a meter. I've tried to chase individual circuits through the harness and plugs using the schematics, and guess I'm not as smart as i might hope. I know this might sound simple but you do have...

Re: '78 GL1000 No lights or start

Good idea. I don't have jumper cables, but have a jump starter. Tried it, and the fan was running full out (vs barely running before), but still no lights. Tries to crank, very feebly. Jump starter may not be fully charged. The "no lights" thing concerns me. I'll have to see if local auto parts can...

Re: engine swap 1100 -1200

I have a few gl1100s, and I'm fairly new to the goldwing scene and ran into a few issue since joining. I picked up my 1st gl1100 and firing up after it sitting for a few months piston met valve and it's been a slow process of complete tare down of the engine and replace and rebuild. As I've made he...

Re: 1976 Gold Wing Valve springs in upside down

I recently re-built the heads & re-lapped the valves as I had to replace the head gaskets ,I did not read the work-shop manual which states the tightly wound end of the spring should be against the head & I re-built the cylinder but did not check to see what was the correct end of each valve spring...

Re: 78 gl1000 turnsignal mount thread size

In my case it was the rear ones that did not fit. Saber Cycle said they would fit and they had "never had any complaints". What a crock that was. I have now bought from them twice, the first and the last time. My buddy has a lathe and made some 12mm adapters to screw into the 14 mm threads on the 78...

Re: Seized Front Calipers

If the calipers released after cracking loose the brake lines, that sounds to me like there was still pressure in the system until you loosened the lines (probably lost a little brake fluid). In which case the calipers likely OK and Master Cylinder is suspect. Did you rebuild that too? Be sure litt...

The turn signals are a bit rough but may clean up looked like they were wrapped in newspaper and got wet, head light tub is good and ears. Don’t have the head light rim though sadly but there’s repro’s out there I can use I suppose. I like that ngw site it’s a lot more focused for these wings. Once...

When Honda discontinued the older shafts, there were articles here on how to rebuild them. However, Honda brought back the factory part at a good price, so the interest dried up.
When did Honda offer new driveshafts?

Re: gl1000 -1978 driveshaft question

Anything built by man can be rebuilt! Now its a question of what you would pay. There is a write up on fixing u joints for Goldwings. Lots of machine work (read that as expensive) but it can be done. Basically you have to grind or mill the staked ends and cut a new ring around to hold in the cir-cl...
