Re: Is this a DIY job?

Well it was for me, but some guys I have known can't drive a nail into a board with a hammer. I will assume that you have some mechanical skills so I say it is pretty easy. The hardest part is removal and replacement, Everybody says you have to do it on the side-stand else a cog will fall out (away?...

Re: Rebuilding (not master) cylinder brakes

Yes soft aluminium vs hard brass can be a problem. In my case the brass brush was fairly soft and the RPM on the dremel was fairly low (variable speed unit). But I didn't work real hard just a few times around and not pushing too hard, just enough to get rubber and corrosion off.

Rebuilding (not master) cylinder brakes

I rebuilt brake cylinders on all 3 brakes. Items i have noticed and a tip. 1) All 3 cylinders were "broken" because both pistons in each cylinder did not come out at the same rate, and even got stuck. 2) Speed Bleeders are really great! 3) A Dremel tool with a brass wire brush (see picture) is perfe...

Re: question re float height, now brakes wow!

If you follow this I started asking about the float levels, and then got into the brakes. Well the rear break pedal now tries to stop the bike on a dime! I guess even though i was riding it around, the rear brake cylinder had one piston that wouldn't keep up with the other. Now they work properly an...

Re: question re float height, now brakes

Haven't taken the time yet to check my float height. As you may know this all relates to my fuel mileage running around 25 mpg! Well I had to check the brakes because the rear pedal got real light, couldn't push it hard enough, kind of like air but you couldn't ever get it to feel right. So I replac...

both front caliper rebuild

OK it seems there are hundreds of kits at all prices for the front calipers... ant suggestions? On my other bikes. I just pushed in the pistons and replaced the pads, one bike I had to rebuild all the calipers but they were all the same and reasonably priced from Yamaha. I have ordered the rear cali...

Re: question re float height

Ordered a float height gauge. waiting for it. Had to change the brake pads (all 3) so I cleaned off the pins that hold the pads aligned even though they were fairly free... took a few taps with a hammer and a pin punch but not too hard. Thee plugs will be removed. inspected and also changed after th...

Re: question re float height

Need to check the plugs now, but I have been thinking and trying to figure it out. The last time i pulled the plugs they were all dark showing too much fuel, and about the same as each other.

question re float height

So my carbs are clean and work "fine" however I get poor fuel mileage, about 26 mpg. Verified by several tanks over some time. Bike;1985 GL1200A The carbs are: synced clean no popping new air filter new gas filter fuel mixture screws about 1.5 to 1.75 turns out starts and runs fine cold idle after t...

Re: Lighting issue

Generally a "bad" battery lets itself be known in other ways. If the stator works, if the rectifier / regulator is connected on all three yellow wires, if the connecting plug (three wires, yellow) are good or soldered, then the lights at a light will be a bit dimmer due to the stator not putting out...

Re: 1985 Limited Edition Alternator Wiring Schematic

I replaced my stock reg/rectifier with a newer one and left off the reg/rectifier plug and connected the output from the reg/rect directly to the battery plus and minus posts. It's been running fine for at least 6 months. I think that you can connect directly from the alternator post to the positive...

Use a resistor so the total (coil resistance + resistor) is about equal to the stock coil.

I have one, removed from an 86 aspencade. Since my 85 has an aftermarket system I cant test it, so it may work or may need service. I'd sell it if somebody wanted it. What is it worth to you plus shipping?

Re: Headlight Will Not Come On

My 1200 lost the headlight. It turned out to be the start switch. You can take the switch apart but be careful, there are springs inside. In any case you take the s=witch apart, clean out the gunk, get it clean! Then polish the four copper or brass dots and put it back together, that's it.
