Re: Poorboy alternator conversion on my GL1200A

I hooked the meter up to the positive side of the fuse box accessory terminal. That way it's on only when the key is on

Re: Poorboy alternator conversion on my GL1200A

I know checking a new part for failure it's not something I think about either. Would sure be nice if that was it. I hate doing something and not really knowing what you're looking for. I know when I did mine I made the brackets and everything with the help of pictures online. And I used a Geo metro...

Just wondering if you have had the alternator checked out? Sometimes new stuff is bad right off the bat.

Re: Fairing crack repair

What I've used is a 3M product I get from NAPA. It's a tube of window sealant. I apply it on the backside of the crack. I've used on a lawn mower and small tractor plastic hood.

Re: timing question for my 84 gl1200a Hoping it gets more views here

I had a timing issue with my 85 1200I. I was sent a picture that showed the right (starboard ) factory gear mark was 2 teeth off from what it should be. When repositoned it ran good and has been that way since. Mabey you can find my old post, and it might help.

Re: Poorboy alternator conversion on my GL1200A

Just to let people know with my conversion I used the OEM hose cut in half with 2 copper street elbow's trimmed to fit closer and then soldered. The hose fits fairly well. It's been working about 1000 miles. So so far so good.

Re: Found a Wineberry color match

Looked at it yesterday in the sun. It's mabey just a little bit darker. But it's hard to tell, the bike is 32 years young and faded on the top of all the painted parts. I sure like the thought of doing one piece at a time, as time allows. With the rattle cans clean up in no problem. The guy who helpe...

Re: Found a Wineberry color match

I just repainted one of my side bag covers . I used the Dupli Color Dark Garnet Red. To me it looks like an exact match for my 85. Got it done and back on in one day. When I was finished painting I put in front of a small heater to help the clear coat harden a bit. Now I'm thinking of the rest of th...

Re: Alternative coolant

New antifreeze is like some new oils. Do the research before you buy and use it. Not nearly as simple as it used to be.

The one I use says on the container, no silicate and good
for aluminum engines. Also good to mix with all antifreeze.

This is the antifreeze that I use in my bikes SERVICE PRO® ALL MAKES • ALL MODELS UNIVERSAL FORMULA ANTIFREEZE/COOLANT It is silicate and phosphate free. I use the 50/50 most of the time. Sometimes the consentrate. And I do keep an eye on ebay. I guess I'm to cheap to buy something I don't know if I...

Re: 1200 water pump

Thanks for all the help. It's much nicer to know how far one has to go to make sure it's done right the first time. It's getting harder to find mechanics that know older bikes, that goes for any type of machine. That's why I enjoy my gl1200I and GL500I.I bought a 1986 1200 for a parts bike. Swapped ...

Re: 1200 water pump

One more thing. It does not leak out of the drain hole while it is running or after it has been shut off for a day or two. Only when it has been sitting for a couple of weeks. Don't know if that means there's a seal out and leaks a little bit or the water pump is going out.

Re: 1200 water pump

Thanks, that kind of was my thought too but I was not sure. If I get the OEM one I have to buy all of the gasket kit for that also. Mine is not leaking very much I had done new head gaskets and carburetor rebuild. When I started it up and ran it for about a half-hour on the bench everything was fine...

Re: Trailer build (or stuff I do in my spare time)

Instead of rivets, would some of the glue they make today work ? I've used some to repair the fairing on my GL500. PO had cut speaker holes in it, which I patched up.

My 1200GL lost the stator. I did all the checks and that was it. Not in a hurry, it was my winter project. Had to drop the motor to get it out. We then rode the summer and it puked again 6 months later. I had bought in on ebay and was told the 6 month warranty was from date of purchase not installat...

I wouldn't use that in my bike. I'm sure it's good but that is what I use in my 2006 Dodge 5.9. It calls for a HOAT antifreeze.

Re: Alternative coolant

Antifreeze used to be antifreeze. Now with emissions. There is several kinds. I use a mixes with everything 50/50 that's good with aluminum. The new OAT stuff will not mix with older ones. They react with each other and destroy some components inside. If you want to change be sure to flush the engin...

One thing I started using instead of WD-40 is Corrosion X. It is for electrical . It doesn't short out , but it's also one of the best panetrating oils I've used.
