Re: GL1100 to GL1200 Engine Swap?

It's not impossible, but you'll have to get friendly with a welder to modify the frame to fit the 1200 engine. Easy - no, but yes, it has been done before, so it's not impossible. OK, Thx. If frame mods are required that would make the swap a "no go" as far as I'm concerned. Do you happen to know i...

GL1100 to GL1200 Engine Swap?

Has anyone swapped a GL1200 engine into a GL1100? Is it possible? I'm aware of issues like needing to use hydraulic clutch controls and the GL1200 electric fuel pump, but are there any big show-stopper problems that make this swap impossible? The idea is to retrofit some of the factory GL1200 design...

Re: Ran Fine Last Summer - Now It Won't Idle (Once Again)

Well, I have just finished cleaning the slow and main jets AGAIN after the bike sat unused for maybe 6 mo. Same gunk as last time blocking the jets again. I found a greenish colored residue in varying amounts in the bowl of each carb. Is this carb clogging just the effect of using alcohol fuels tha...

Re: How to replace your front wheel bearings

FYI, for anyone removing GL1100 wheel brgs I have one possible update to this fine DIY How-To article by WingAdmin. I just removed my front wheel brgs following the directions in this How-To with one deviation; to get ahold of the wheel brg inner race and drive the brgs out of the wheel hub I used a...

Re: From 81 to 82 (or 83) Wheel & Tire Conversion

its a direct and easy bolt up. use your existing rotors and calipers and wheel spacers. this is a very popular upgrade. I put 83 wheels on a 82 Aspy. 8-) Do you (or anyone else) know if using the '82/'83 rear wheel also absolutely requires use of the '82/'83 swingarm for tire sidewall clearance due...

From 81 to 82 (or 83) Wheel & Tire Conversion

Has anyone done a conversion from the 1981 19" front / 17" rear Comstar wheels to either the 1982 18" front / 16" rear Comstar or the 1983 one piece cast wheels? I assume these newer wheels would be an easy upgrade for my 1981 bike, but I wanted to ask the question before I committed to do it. I int...

Re: Ran Fine Last Summer - Now It Won't Idle

You said you cleaned out the tank and fuel lines, did you clean out the fuel pump also?Maybe some trash was in there! Yes, I also had the fuel pump opened up last year to check & clean it. The only old fuel system component I reused pretty much as-is was the fuel pump-to-carb fuel line section, and ...

Re: Ran Fine Last Summer - Now It Won't Idle

I got my '81 GL1100 Interstate up and running about a year ago and ran it thru last spring and summer without problems. It sat in my garage over the winter, and now when started it it needs constant partial choke to idle without dying, and idles very rough like some cyls are not firing at all. :x T...

Re: Ran Fine Last Summer - Now It Won't Idle

Changing jet sizes is generally not a good idea..you may find it very hard to tune and synch..also intake issues may arise.. You said the plugs showed no color what does that mean..white? or actual just bare metal? I'm looking for a little bit of ash gray or tan color on the insulator, and right no...

Re: Ran Fine Last Summer - Now It Won't Idle

Just curious...why are you replacing contaminated jets instead of cleaning them. I also had stuff that plugged on jet.it came in as a result of the ethanol fuel.Too small to filter,it accumulated in the carb bowl. Seems once I got everything cleaned and flushed for the second time,I've not had any ...

Re: Ran Fine Last Summer - Now It Won't Idle

FYI, pulled the carb rack and found that the #3 carb slow jet was plugged up again. I don't understand how this would happen setting a few months; I had these carbs completely cleaned, rebuilt and working great last summer. Maybe some leftover muck from the gas tank cleanout? I found some particles ...

Re: I Need a Keihin Carb Slow Jet

I think the oem stock main jet is 145. Not sure about the slow jet,if you do a search it should pop up! Found out the OEM std slow jet size is #35, and the main is #145. I'm going with #38 slow jets and #148 main jets to richen the mixture very slightly; my spark plug color indicate it's running ve...

Thx. The slow jets on Ebay that Auctioneeral mentioned are size #35 but they are referenced as being for CBX carbs, not GL1100. It does make sense that the size would be similar....

Thanks for the info, 4wred! I did not think the pressed-in slow jets were available as replacement parts. It is the "3L" type slow jet I want, right? Do you also happen to know which is the OEM standard jet size?

I Need a Keihin Carb Slow Jet

I'm in desperate need of a non-removable slow jet for a Keihin carb. I had one jet taken out for cleaning and managed to lose it in my garage :x  . A damaged, unusable carb body with the slow jet in place would also work; I can remove the jet. Thx Also, has anyone successfully adapted the scre...

Re: Swing arm

Your thread title is confusing; I found that removing the swingarm (and everything rearward you need to remove before you get to the swingarm) gives you great access to the ignition advance mechanism including the vacuum advance unit. Also, I have seen some posts suggesting you can get along fine wi...

Saddlebag Weather Seal Replacement?

Re: Ran Fine Last Summer - Now It Won't Idle

Narrow this down a bit first. Start the bike from cold...idle only (as best as it can) for about 8 seconds...shut it down...lightly tap each header pipe to find which cylinder is not firing (a cold pipe). Remove that spark plug, check for spark and compression...If they prove OK , then move to the i...

Nice recovery job. Having done the same thing with an '81 GL1100I between Aug '14 and Feb '15 I am familiar with what you did with this one; yours and mine are even the same color. Sounds like you had more to do to yours to bring it back. Mine had set in an enclosed bldg for 18 years so the elements...

Re: Replacing fuel tank

I recently cleaned up an '81 GL1100 gas tank using a combination of electrolysis (using a battery charger) which removed 80% of the rust & crud and phosphoric acid (Metal Rescue from Home Depot or similar) which took care of most of the rest of the stuff. The combination works well if you give both ...

Re: GL1100 running lean?

I read your post and just took a look at the plugs in my '81 GL1100 (100% stock w/ newly rebuilt carbs). My plugs look very much like yours. I rode the bike about 200mi in one day last week and got right at 40mi/gal which I think is normal for these bikes, but I do agree with you that the plugs seem...
