Re: GL1000 - fitting the Vetter Fairing

Just throwing this out there - is it possible that your side covers are after-market? I had an unrelated problem with the engine side covers, and lo and behold, they were not original...

Re: Might be buying a 1977 Goldwing that does not start

The starter rebuild is not hard at all. Once you get the bloody thing out... Lowering the exhaust was the only problem I had. http://goldwingchrome.com/Manuals/GL1000/Honda%20Goldwing%20GL1000%20GL1100%20Starter%20Rebuild.pdf Good reference, but no pictures http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.ph...

Re: Proud new owner - '78 GL1000 & Martek???

Spent a long and rewarding day in the driveway, tackling the missing center stand, plugs, timing belt, thermostat, and new hoses. Both my living bike and my donor bike came without center stands. Spookytooth helped a great deal by sending me one that he had. (Shout out to Spookytooth. Big thanks fro...

Re: Proud new owner - '78 GL1000 & Martek???

New action on this project. Hopefully pictures tomorrow. My original bike was to be the donor rather than the 'donee'. However, the original bike had been so molested by POs, I couldn't make headway with the f***ed up electronics. (I didn't know that much black tape was available on this whole plane...

Re: Cleaning Gauges - '78 GL1000

Any other thoughts? I pulled the gauges and it seems that they are sealed tight. Might not be a solution to this.

Re: Fairing swap

Go to a local and honest machinist with your bike and your fairing. Should be relatively simple and cheap. Metal stock and a bit of welding.

Not attempting any upgrade. Just the merging of two '78 GL1000s. Hadn't even considered going to a 1200.

Re: Proud new owner - '78 GL1000 & Martek???

With having in mind that I need entire new front wheel assembly, including brakes - I thinking of going full Frankenbike. I found another '78 (in better condition than mine) but without the fairing I want. I think I can whack these two into one good looking, good riding bike.

Can't wait!

Re: Proud new owner - '78 GL1000 & Martek???

Any thoughts on Partzilla as a seller? Just wondering. I was supposed to have my ( stupid-little-aggravating-starter-rebuild-stopping-time-wasting ) fiber $2.00 o-ring by Memorial day, and the order has been postponed because I also ordered an air filter. The air filter is on back order... Have I ma...

Thanks much. I am going to let it ride, as I have never ceased to be amazed at the knowledge on this forum. Guaranteed someone out there has perfected this, or knows of someone who has.

Sorry about that - I meant the lower gauge cluster - fuel, temp and voltage. 1000 pardons.

Cleaning Gauges - '78 GL1000

Is there a way to clean the gauges on this bike? Where the actual information is conveyed is clear, but the words have turned a dark brown/red. I pulled the cluster out, but they seem to be completely sealed. Any thoughts?

Re: Auxiliary Lights

superbrightleds.com has worked well for me for automotive applications. Redid the entire dash in my Jeep in red. (Great for night vision)

Their bulbs are all plug and play, built to replace standard OEM fittings.

Re: Proud new owner - '78 GL1000 & Martek???

Speaking of brakes... Looking at my girl and looking at other motorcycles of similar vintage, I have come to realize that my front wheel differs quite substantially. A PO removed the original front wheel and replaced it with one with only one brake rotor. The other brake line has been snipped and pl...

Cheers mate. Very much looking forward to the end game.

I have read a lot, but one bit of advice requested... Any other major rebuilds advised at this early stage? Really happy with how the starter worked out (sans stupid fiber filter)...

Re: Proud new owner - '78 GL1000 & Martek???

Just a quick note on my progress today with the starter rebuild. A bad day in the garage is better than the best day in the office. Somehow, step one 'drain the oil' was lost on me. My garage smells like a real mechanic's shop now. Related, we are now out of cat litter. In removing the starter, one ...

Proud new owner - '78 GL1000 & Martek???

Just a note to say hi and introduce myself. Just picked up a 1978 GL1000 and couldn’t be happier. Before I begin I would like to express thanks to those who have contributed in the past. I have already gotten a tremendous amount of help from you all. Thanks again. I had started looking for a GL back...
