Re: Looking for matching rattle can paint
Check with your local auto paint supplier. They usually have a camera, they can shoot a pic of the color you want and mix up some basecoat and put in a rattle can for you. I've done this a couple times now and they got it real close. As long as you are not doing a blend it should look spot on! I have ...

1- The box and weight can go away 2- Lots of aftermarket headlight buckets on the web, this is where all the wires that were in the jbox behind the weight will end up. 3- Can't use your oem headlight, has no bucket. There are aftermarket headlights and brackets that will work. 4- Next to your hand-grip...

Re: '81 GL1100 - Parked Since '86
First thing i'd check is to see if the engine is seized. If not then carbs are probably gonna need cleaned out if there was gas in them when it was parked.Timing belts need to be changed.New battery,If you try running it with those belts on they could break and trash the engine, good luck t

Head stem weight isn't needed on a naked bike.

The diy articles are your friend .Go to top of the page click on gl1100 in how to articles. There is one there for how to rebuild your starter and yes bike on the sidestand while removing and installing. Lucky for you it's a starter problem, much easier to fix then yankin the carbs off to fix them!!

Re: Starter drags then clicks good battery
If you're leaving the petcock on when you park it and the float needles aren't closing properly, very good chance you are getting hydrolock. Float bowls overfill and run down into cylinders.Remove the sparkplugs next time this happens and crank the engine over, don't do it near anything you don't want...

Re: Fresh carb rebuild and Engine Knocking
Bench testing is your friend,I learned the hard way verify the needles are seating properly without flooding before you reinstall, and I always turn the petcock off every time I shut down the engine.Too much work (pita) to keep yanking these carbs in and out.

I had a similar problem w/aftermarket float needles.Had to change my float height settings a little from the recommended ones to stop the bowls from overfilling.

Sounds like you just need a good sync. The fact that the stator bolt tightened up is a good sign.Assuming you did everything rite with the carbs you should be good to go.

Re: Oil line on left side of engine?
Unfortunately my 1980 gl1100 doesn't have a oil level window or a dip stick???? WHAT???
All 1100's have a oil level window on them, right side of engine near the bottom. It has a screw head sticking out the middle to turn a wiper on the inside.Check oil level with bike on the centerstand.

That's great you got it all sorted! But 6500 rpm's for ten seconds without a load on the engine I personally would never rev a engine that high and that long with no load on it,just sayin.

Have you performed a test on the pump? Verify it isn't working so you're not chasing problems not there.
