Re: Fork Seal Repacement

I'm in the middle of this job right now. I made the pvc slide seal hammer. I'm having a heck of a time getting the copper plated bushing to go in its spot.

Re: Fork Seal Replacement

I was very excited to get my new progressive springs and put them in my 83 Aspencade. Lo and behold: rusted cir clips are what I found underneath the cracked dust seals. It's pretty bad. They are brittle and stuck in their groves. How can they be removed?

Re: Lingering White Smoke

I use Delo and change about every 2000 miles. I thought that synthetics are too slick and negatively effects the clutch. I do use Castro Syntec in my 1.8 turbo VW and I have 208,000 miles on it with very few engine problems. As for the head gasket change - hardest part of the job was pulling the hea...

Re: Blew the head gasket at free-way speed - damage?

On another post I mentioned that the bike ran hot on my long trip. I hadn't put the lower farings back on because I hadn't synced the carbs yet. Puting them back on (after the carb sync) made everything run great. The acceleration roll-on and slow-down is so smooth. Before, when I would engine brake...

Re: Engine running hot after head gasket change

Thanks for the help guys. I did re-tourque the bolts. Only the bottom center ones needed tightened. The reason she was getting hot: I didn't put the lower farings back on because I still needed to tune the carbs after adjusting the valves. They evidently direct a whole lot of air towards the radiato...

Re: Lingering White Smoke

I agree with Grindl. I just replaced my head gasket on both sides. The one that failed was cylinder number three. It gave me a couple of signs before it failed: white vapor on start-up was one of them. Better fix it before you bike leaves your stranded on the freeway like mine did.

Engine running hot after head gasket change

I just changed the head gasket, lapped the valves, flushed the coolant, changed the oil (twice) and my bike is running and sounding great - except: She's running about two bars hotter than she used to. Symptoms (in 70 degree F. weather): Gauge runs at 60 percent hot (used to be 30-40) when level on ...

Re: Blew the head gasket at free-way speed - damage?

I got it all put back together. Cleaning the heads took a good amount of time. I flushed the radiator with distilled water, then put non-silicate motorcycle anti-freeze in it. I also ran fresh oil through it, and changed it out for new after a ride. I was very concerned at start-up how much white va...

Re: Blew the head gasket at free-way speed - damage?

I've got it all torn apart right now. It took me forever to get all of the old gasket off. I did order the athena top end kit. I also lapped all of the valves, then put the springs back on (that took all night to get the keepers to latch until I got the hang of it). After installing the valves in th...

Re: Blew the head gasket at free-way speed - damage?

Thanks, I'm going to tear it down tonight after work and order the gasket sets. I've been doing a lot of reading. It looks like cleaning everything will take some time. I'm going to do both sides, and redo the timing belt idler pulleys as well. I'm super glad I had some cheap insurance with roadside...

Blew the head gasket at free-way speed - damage?

I just blew my head-gasket on my GL1100. 61,000 miles. I lost power, looked down and noticed the temp was all way up. I pulled over to the side of the freeway and shut it down. Besides the head gasket, can I expect any other damage?

Re: Rear Tire Rub

I had the same issue with my rear tire. I had let the PSI get to low at one point, and I had also let too much air out of the shocks (because I have short legs). There was also a fender-support rail inside of the fender that wore a grove on the left side of the rear tire when I lowered the shocks. A...

83 aspencade repainted

image.jpg Just got done with it. So many things accomplished thanks to the info on this site. It was grey and blue. Old paint was pretty rough, so was the seat. Aluminum was all white and crusty. I changed the tires myself (thanks wingadmin!). I did all the prep for the paint, and have done all of ...
