Re: clutch cover gasket replacement

sorry mate, i disagree. it needs to come out, and like i suggested, the exhausts coming off wouldn't do any harm either. if you're happy enough plugging away in a confined space, fair play to you.

got to be honest mate, even watching the videos puts the fear in me. like i mentioned, i've never worked on carbs, never even removed them - which in itself strikes me as quite an achievement.

and just as the dopamine was kicking in, Saturday afternoon... Sluggish ride, lots of chugging, spluttering, getting off and adjusting the idle, and that vision of walking away from a recently arsoned old motorcycle. a little better Sunday afternoon. similar start to the ride; poor start-up, smoking...

AND... I bought the high temp clear coat from Lordco along with brake cleaner and was just about to do the deed when i thought, 'what the hell...' i got the BLACK permatex (oil resistant allegedly) and with my fingertip, smeared along the casing join, then started her up and let her idle. then i rep...

i gotta give this high temp clear coat a crack! call me a sucker for snake oil or whatever, but where's the harm in trying... good omens include receiving a swift reply from a post 5 years old, (thank you eightangrybears) then possibly a solution from another forum reader, Rambozo no less! in the me...

exactly. i've reached that horrible moment where i've realized that after 8 summers this might be it. for a flaw in the casting... Re: Clutch cover leaking (78 GL1000)....tried EVERYTHING...almost...

i appreciate this is a bit of a long shot, but did you ever manage to resolve the issue of the drip from the s.e. corner of your clutch cover? the reason i ask is that the same thing is currently happening with my '79 gl1000... replacing the gasket is a bloody awful job if you don't have the space o...

Re: clutch cover gasket replacement

Cheers Mario ! It's true, you don't need to take out the motor, however, the rear wheel needs to come out, it would be even better if you took the exhausts off, and you need to disconnect the clutch cable at the lever AND at the lifter mechanism, then 'remodel' the breather tube clip and if the plan...

clutch cover gasket replacement

I bit the bullet weather-wise and decided to insure my '79 GL1000 for some 2022 fun, but within a week noticed a little oil on the shed floor... A barely detectable drip from the bottom bolts of the clutch cover would indicate perhaps the gasket (#2) needs replacing. 0000266473 - Copy (2).gif My que...

Re: Gl1000 cafe finally done

i fell for the slow boat from China version of that fairing too... pleased with how it looked, but when riding i felt like one of those dogs with their head out the car window. at speed, could hardly keep my head straight cos of the buffeting. rode it like that for a couple weeks just to make sure i...

Re: How to remove and reinstall your rear wheel

You and unkle buckie have given me an idea  for a thread in Goldwing Chat. I'll ask people to take a video or picture and share their "Happy Dances" that have happened when they've reached solutions while working on their Wings, or anything else. Maybe people could find these useful ...

Re: How to remove and reinstall your rear wheel

I did this exactly as shown, but when I tighten the axle nut to 69 ft lbs (I think, can't remember) I have an 83 GL1100I, the wheel will not spin. When I loosen the axle nut, the wheel spins freely. What am I doing wrong? I hope nobody else has had this problem and I am repeating the question, but ...

Re: How to remove and reinstall your rear wheel

I've attempted to remove my rear wheel off my naked '79 GL1000 using this thread, with reference to the fact there are differences between the models. My problems started to occur at step 17, removing the outer axle spacer from between the swingarm and the caliper bracket... it was loose enough to m...

Re: 1979 GL1000 intermittent horn...

the fuse is located in the false tank fuse box, in there with a few others a 10 and a 15. i'm going to try haul the wire connection off the Mitsuba horns later this evening and replace the fuse and see if it blows again. incidently, googling mitsuba horns perhaps isn't the smartest idea when the mis...

Re: 1979 GL1000 intermittent horn...

so the plot long-windedly thickens... re-connected my starter relay very gingerly with the new ring connector - not much wire/room left to play with after replacing that item last year - and with a new 5amp fuse in, turned the ignition. hurrah! headlight and gauges on, boo hiss, fuse blows... repeat...
