Re: Speedometer 5 MPH off!

My 1800 (2001) was off by about 5 and so I changed the rear tire to a 70 series rather than the 60 series that came stock (about 1" in diameter larger). That larger tire brought it right on spec as verified by my GPS. I don't know if that's an option for you to go to a different tire size.

Re: How do you brake your Wing?

When I am on the highway in 5th gear, to slow for a turn, I usually begin by downshifting to 4th. Then I will apply both brakes. As I approach the stop, I shift to neutral and then coast while applying the brakes lightly or not at all. . Do I read this right? That you are stopped in Neutral? That i...

Re: eyeglasses with a snug helmet... any tips??

I have found that I look for glasses that have the thinnest arms that I can get for this very reason. They are also straight (i.e., no ear curl) Mine slide in rather easily and they also cut down on the pain produced by having them being pressed against my head because they are slim, straight and sm...

Re: Stopping gracefully

My advice - FWIW. Practice does not make perfect - it makes permanent! Parking lot practice (and lots of it) where you are concentrating on straight line, center balance (meaning no hanging a leg - keep both feet on the pegs) and when you are almost stopped put your left foot down with a slight (ver...

Re: What's the strangest thing you've hit?

I was on a weekend Men's Fellowship ride and going through some back roads cut out of the forest (read limited sight-lines). I was leading and pushing it as I usually do. Came around a left turn curve and low and behold three very large Turkeys were crossing the road (while they were not chickens, I...

Re: Average age ?

Yes, I'm wondering if there's a way to update our answer as we grow older. I turned 60 last fall and would like to move up a bracket. (in an effort to keep the stats accurate) (I'm an Astrophysics guy and the error is driving me nuts  )

Re: Engine protection plate

Thanks to everyone for your input. Seems to be a good idea if just for peace of mind. I have read of some minor concerns such as the screws being able to come loose, or the opposite, rust into place. I was also interested when one reviewer wrote about some damage to the pan when he tried to raise h...

I knew that I went too far when my buddy behind me told me I was throwing sparks in the curves.... The tire was well past the wear bars... and into the steel belts  Made it home though I took it easy.

My 2001 GL1800 does not have back-lit controls so maybe an older version would work for you? Might be harder to source though.

Re: What's the funniest thing that ever happened to you with your Goldwing?

It wasn't funny at the time, but it sure is now (that time has passed)..... The year is 2003. I was riding a 2002 Kawi 800 cruiser and my friend was on his Valk. We decided we wanted to test drive some Goldwings and so went to the bike dealer who was hosting a Honda demo day. We pulled in the to the...

I've seen better looking quad 1800 units than this one, by why? A trike or reverse trike would provide the same level of stability. Maybe they just wanted to stand out?

When the time comes that I'm not comfortable on two wheels it's a sidecar for me.

Re: iron butt rides

I've done several of the IB rides. Lake Huron circle, Lake Michigan Circle, Lower Lakes Circle and the Great Lakes Circle, an All Ontario Saddle sore. All of those have been solo rides. I find, however, that riding those types of rides with a buddy is much more enjoyable.. The 1000 mile rides take m...

Re: Stop lights will not let me proceed.

Weight (i.e., pressure plate) is not involved (that's what I thought too, until my electrician son gave the explanation.) It is based on the concept of inductance. The wire in the road is a loop that has a small voltage applied to it. When a vehicle of sufficient iron mass enters the loop it creates...

Re: RIDING IN THE RAIN.

Beware the dreaded Tar Snakes - whenever you ride, but especially in the rain! Just like painted lines, they be slippery suckers. If it's going to be light rain I don't bother with gear - as long as you are moving you don't really get wet - well, maybe your forehead :? I keep a watch on the rain by ...

Re: traffic light stop/wait/go best practice?

We always taught new riders to stop in the "Ready Position" - Bike in 1st gear, right foot on the rear brake, left foot on the ground, both hands on the handle bars (not just the clutch), scanning your environment (ahead, side to side, both mirrors). This is the position and awareness that...

And if you want something REALLY boring (just for a break.. 8-) ..) Well, alright. I watched one of the videos and see what you are talking about. I would rather set my speed before I hit the corner rather than try to adjust down midstream. If it's blind, well, I adjust lower to provide for unexpected things that are out of my line of sight. As an Instructor we trai...

Re: Trail braking

My understanding of trail braking is using your back brake when going around corners slowly. Using the back brake tends to stretch the bike out and make it want to stand up straight rather than fall into the corner. I've never heard the term in relationship to using the front brake. "trail"...

Re: Clear coat aluminum wheels??

I hate cleaning rims! My bike also get's washed when it rains (it sits in the driveway all season) or gets ridden in the rain :o My solution was similar but something I could do myself. It does require removing the wheel, but not dismounting the tire. I used plastidip (prodip.ca) and plastic coated ...
