Re: Timing, ticking and other issues

Don't buy another head, I have several if you need one. Doubt that I have the valves you need, but maybe some good ones are still in one of the heads. Yours for the taking, and the postage.

Stuck Two Stroke Piston

I picked up two 1991 Kawasaki KE100s today for my grandsons. They are in excellent condition and I got them for $200 total. One of the bikes have a piston that is stuck and I'm wondering how best to get it loosened up. I read about this in the past but never have had the problem before. Can't imagin...

Re: heated gear

Lots of folks have aftermarket running lights on their bikes, and the LEDs would pull even less power. All of my existing lights have been converted to LEDs, including the headlight. Interested in the answer you get on running heated seat, grips, etc from people who have not done an alternator conve...

1982 Interstate

I want some suggestions on what to ask for the Gold Witch. Our time is together is up. The bike looks great and is now running just as good. 66k on the odometer, 23k on the motor and enough new stuff on it that I would break the internet listing all of it. Complete record of all of it. Re: Idle mixture screw settings

Yeah that pin has to be right and the pin I'm referring to usually does not cause a problem. It did for me because I probably forced it in with a mall. I think that you can get to the PG by removing the wheel and swingarm, but I believe I was told that you would not be able to fix the thing. What's ...

Re: Idle mixture screw settings

Is this the pin you are talking about RB? Pin_1.jpg I broke mine reinstalling the PG and had to remove the motor again to fix. Here is a picture of how the set up should look like courtesy of IndianaKid. PG_POLES.jpg The gap should be 12. My bike's timing is perfect now. All this assumes the carbs a...

Is Your Starter Old?

Mine is, around 70,000 miles old. My starter was pitifully slow so I took it off and apart. Here's what I found: IMG_0776.jpg I said somewhere else that the stuff in there is what God used to form man. No wonder it was dragging. Ordered a new brush set, will clean it up and grease and see if it don'...

Re: Starter Clutch

Just a follow up Indianakid, I finally got my gasket and was able to put things back together. Timing mark at F1 and both poles line up perfectly. Should be timed correctly now. Not sure how you knew that because I've looked high and low for that information and the service manual is worthless on th...

Check out this article from Randakk. It was written for a GL100 but still relevant to your bike.

Lots of good tutorials here too. Welcome from beautiful Indiana.

Re: Starter Clutch

Yes ! That looks much better. For a more accurate "static timing" set the crank to "F1" and verify the poles are aligned. To get any better than that you will need a timing light and a sight plug for the timing port so you can check / set the timing with the engine running. Not sure what it means t...

Re: Starter Clutch

I saw your reply on the Saunders site and I will look around for the broken piece from the crank pin. Here is a picture of a slot at the end of the crank that I think is where that pin slides into. Motor is set to T1. IMG_0754.jpg This would be the approximate position of the alignment notch once it...

Re: Starter Clutch

Not a silly question at all but I still have the numbered spark plug wires and they are in the correct place. I did not pull the plug wires out of the coils. Also, I did not do anything with either the timing belts or valves as the bike was running fine before it stopped charging. No prior issues wi...

Re: Starter Clutch

I would like to know if I am having the symptoms of starter clutch problems. The bike turns over fine if the on/off switch is in the off position. But it stops with a violent clunk intermittently when the switch is on. There is a long story behind this beginning with me removing the motor to change ...

Glad you figured out the part. I had to look up Box Elder, SD. I was in the Air Force but never made to Ellsworth. I'm wondering if that is where they have a bunch of ICBMs???

Close to the Black Hills and that ain't bad.

Re: Runability problem 82 gl1100 interstate

Sounds like you need to take the carbs off and clean them out. Can't speak to electrical issues, especially since you are getting spark. In fact if this bike is new to you here is a really nice list to go through. http://www.randakksblog.com/starting-a-gl1000-after-a-long-lay-up/#more-687 Written fo...

Re: Stuck in neutral ?

There are a lot things here that could be addressed. The starter issue could still be just the starter. You may be having problems with the starter switch at the handlebar. Take it apart and clean it out. The starter clutch may be an issue too and that is quite involved. Motor coming out involved. I...

GL1100 Bling

I have a couple sets of cam covers, a timing belt cover and side pieces for sale. These are all chrome and the condition is about and 8 out of 10. I will take $20 a pair for the covers and $30 for side bling. We can figure out the shipping if you want one of them. I'll take better close up shots if ...

Yes. I actually had bypassed the old connector and soldered the connections. Had to cut them to test. Missed that step at first. No continuity. Oh well. Gold Witch strikes again.

Re: How to replace your speedometer cable/speedometer itself

As Wilcoy said, just unscrew the cable behind the speedometer, and on the wheel is a screw. Be careful unscrewing that small bolt at the wheel and not strip it. I had to use the hammer thingy to get mine off. May hit it with PB Blaster before you try. I would also lube the new cable.
