Re: Getting a 93 Aspencade running after 4 years sitting

Hi neighbor! I use the beads for tire balance. Mostly I use AirSoft ceramic .2 gram beads, but for my last rear tire, I used BBs. Works perfect. You can use Dominion Tire on Rt 1 just north of Aquia Harbor to dismount and mount MC tires. I pay him $20 per tire, but I think he charges $15 (he can't b...

Re: Bike wouldn't start

My 93 does that when the battery is less than fully charged, or after several failed start attempts (when it has been sitting for weeks). It'll crank at a good speed but there is evidently insufficient amperage to fire the coils. I know this is the case because it will start right up when I add jump...

Re: Austone Taxi Tire

I'm running my second Austone Taxi Tire on my 93 GL1500I. It needs replaced, approaching the wear bars in the center tread. My Interstate came with a single air shock. I have to keep that air shock at its maximum pressure and it does NOT bottom out with my 180 lbs. riding solo. When I say bottom out...

Re: please help me

Power from the start switch goes directly to the solenoid through the yellow/red wire. Ground is provided through the neutral switch or the clutch switch, through the green/red wire. There is a diode in the neutral switch circuit that if blown will only allow starting with the clutch pulled in. Ver...

Re: please help me

There are 4 wires to the solenoid, 2 small for control, 2 large for power to the starter. Start with the two large. One should have 12v applied by its direct connection to the battery. Verify that. The other large, will send power to the starter when the solenoid is activated by one of the 2 small w...

Re: New 1100 owner

Hello William and welcome. Based on my own experience with an 82, I would recommend removing the heads (duh, if splitting the case). Lap the valves into their seats, replace the valve guide seals, install new timing belts, set the valve lash, clean the gas tank (I had mine done by Elizabeth Radiator...

Re: Knocj under load

The day I sold my 82 (I rode it to deliver it to the new owner after his test ride) it knocked pulling out like I had never heard it. It had also been sitting unridden for a few months. By disengaging the clutch, I quickly realized that a brake was dragging (found a hot rear rotor). I went straight ...

Re: Swop over 84 engine to 86 engine

That 84 gear indicator sensor wil swap over to the 86 engine cover if there are more wires on his original connector. But the transmission front cover has to come off to make that swap, which is a pain. Should inspect the water pump impeller for play regardless. The 84 WP may be in better shape, who...

My local dealer had side cover grommet kits for about $6.
I considered tethering mine, but it isn’t necessary with good grommets.

Re: Swop over 84 engine to 86 engine

Ouch, that looks a bit like my 1100 when an intake valve snapped, took out the piston and split the cylinder wall. Only other suggestion that I have is to compare the rear covers with the thought of transplanting the vacuum advance/mag pickup/cover from the 84 onto the block of the 86. The "drive" f...

Re: Swop over 84 engine to 86 engine

The freight $$ would be high, but this guy has an entire 84 engine: http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=40558 The reason I respond at all (having no experience with the 1200's) is that I believe your task will be daunting. The 84 spark control/vacuum advance was on the aft engine top r...

Re: Oil Leak at WP bolt and Trans cover Plug

Find a replacement transmission cover on eBay /Pinwall. I did mine on a jack with the front wheel removed. Disturbs coolant hoses but radiator can remain in place, drained. Seals, gasket, perhaps WP? My hoses got reconnected not replaced /shrug/. I tied hoses up out of the way. 8 mm bolts as I recal...

Re: 1800 start problems

Needs to have a good, fully charged battery @>12.5 volts; sounds like it has sat for a while. Prime the fuel system by turning key on for 2 seconds, then off. Do that at least 3 times before ever cranking the starter. Only crank the starter for short attempts, like 2 seconds max. Then re-prime, 2-3x...

Re: 2001 Valkyrie interstate

I have one of those. They like to wear out the rear drive unit pinion cup, what the tail end of the driveshaft mates to. Not visible without removing the rear wheel. Probably fine at that mileage but do grease it up asap. Inspect the inside of the saddlebags for evidence of cracks. Use a bright flas...

Oil Leak at WP bolt and Trans cover Plug

Hi fellas, need a little tech assist again. Latest wrenching adventure was the oil drain plug repair, over here http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18841&start=25 Somewhat related, I've had my eye out for oil leaks after that near-catastrophe and found two forward adjacent to the Water...

Re: Insta Motorcycle Tow by BillyBob1

I considered buying one of these front-wheel holding type trailers, back when my wife was too ill to make her monthly trips up to PA. I happened upon "this" discussion elsewhere and gave thought to simply over-filling the crankcase oil level. Instead, I modified a small trailer (which needs modified...

Re: GL1500 Stripped oil pan??

I have to say, I didn't have much confidence in your approach with the JB Weld. But, JB Weld is some pretty good stuff, and your decision to not only JB the broken parts (assuming you got those parts flawlessly clean of any residual oil), but then give them some structural support by JB Welding the...

Re: GL1500 Stripped oil pan??

Job went well, see the pictures. image32_zpshywf8wgq.jpg image23_zpsmqtf550a.jpg image13_zpsubgwfxrf.jpg I did file the sealing surface flat (not shown) and added a 1/2" o-ring that nested nicely in the timesert gap (I purposely seated it well below flush as part of my plan D revision 4). No leakage...

I tried calling him several times way back then and left voicemails; he never replied. Talked to a member that knows him that said he got help putting it on a trailer and took it to Honda. Months later, he sold it for a song. I never saw the bike but it had "cosmetic issues". I also completely forgo...

Re: Trip dilemma

That is an ambitious ride. I had a similar decision, NC-AZ for Thanksgiving. Really wanted to take my 82 GL1100, which I had reliably ridden many trips from NC-Pa, NC to CT, easily putting >40,000 in two years (28,500 miles per year is just my commuting). I took the 99 Valkyrie IS instead and was GL...

Re: GL1500 Stripped oil pan??

You're right, that did go badly. If you go the two part epoxy route, I'd suggest JB Weld as your two part epoxy. It takes about 24 hours to cure. Don't use the JB Quick, it is not as good as the original JB Weld. Snip I'm a bit more positive in the light of day, but dwelling on it at work. I did re...
